Description Okay... so I've been noticing--especially when running my recent contest-- that some people don't seem to know how to resize images. A common misconception, I think, it that people believe they don't have a program capable of handling resizing. Well since MOST people have MS Paint (Mac users don't, but I'm Macs are a little more graphics savvy so you probably know you can use your art programs to resize images anyways) then most people do have a program. Even if they're not running photoshop or something like that.

When I had somebody tell me that they didn't have a resizing program, I asked if they had MS Paint. Then they told me that it doesn't work as well.. so that's when I decided to make this tutorial. Hopefully it'll be helpful to some of you!

I'm afraid you can't. Not unless you're using vector graphics... Images with pixels are called "raster" graphics. Since they are made of a bunch of tiny dots, it's okay to down size them, because the pixels only get more compact, tighter.. if you blow them up, though, the pixels get large and their borders get fuzzy. That's why you lose quality when you make them bigger. There are certain things you can do to a raster image after you blow it up that can kind of make the quality a little better like using combinations of sharpen filters in photoshop, but the quality will not be as good as the original. You may be able to find tutorials on a good way to fix the quality of a blown-up image somewhere, though. Anyway, Vector graphics don't use pixels, they use "paths" which is basically a boundary which the program fills with a color. You can resize the boundary, therefore, and the color will still just fill to the edges of it so the quality of the color's edges will always look the same. Programs like Flash, Illustrator and CorelDRAW use vectors. But you can't turn raster art or photographs into vector without "drawing" over it in a vector program.. or using some fancy software, but I'm not sure if anything like that exists. Anyway, hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions :]

Nice tutorial. I appreciate it, not because I need help resizing images, but because you shine some light on MS Paint. In fact, when coloring my art, MS Paint comes into play almost as much as the GIMP does.

Good job.

I agree. I use MS Paint as my primary program by choice. It's a mighty program in many ways. Kudos to the tutorial creator for showing love to my favorite program.

Ah yes...the amount of times it gets annoying trying to see a full-sized image that's such a stupidly large size...and re-sizing is so easy, even - like you state here, if you don't have a fancy program to do the job. Kudos on you, hon! Wonderfully easy to follow with great screencaps for ref. ^^

dizzyclown In reply to moldycheese [2006-06-19 02:54:31 +0000 UTC]

the short answer would be you can't. Not unless it's a vector image.

Actually you don't have to go back and change the file type, just change it when you save it, it saves alot of time that way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dizzyclown In reply to lexicalsanctuary [2006-06-19 02:55:36 +0000 UTC]

I think it depends on what you're working with in the first place. I didn't have the option of saving the file as anything other than a BMP the first time.

Funny.. 'cause I tried it on a few other computers today and it still didn't work.

lexicalsanctuary In reply to dizzyclown [2006-06-20 22:04:22 +0000 UTC]

I do it at school and at home, I can do it on just about any comp I try, I don't know why it doesn't work for you.

dizzyclown In reply to lexicalsanctuary [2006-06-20 22:08:32 +0000 UTC]

well, like I said, I believe it has something to do with what you start with. Or you and I are not talking about the same thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lexicalsanctuary In reply to dizzyclown [2006-06-20 22:26:36 +0000 UTC]

To check, What are you talking about exactly?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dizzyclown In reply to lexicalsanctuary [2006-06-20 22:31:04 +0000 UTC]

lol. If you use the rectangular marquee tool to drag a box around the portion of the image you want to cut out, then go to "Edit" >> "Copy To..." and save the file. You can only save as one of 4 varieties of BMP.

lexicalsanctuary In reply to dizzyclown [2006-06-20 22:32:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh that's probably why.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dizzyclown In reply to lexicalsanctuary [2006-06-20 22:38:37 +0000 UTC]

Is that not what you were talking about? Because that was the only other time I "saved" it in the tutorial aside from when I went back to change the file type.
