Holy crap. Such an obvious solution that most people, myself included, totally pass by. I'm so used to doing shadows manually that something as simple as "darken the area" is like a foreign language to me. I gotta try this!

When you think about it, shadows are just darken parts of an object. If you just select the areas and darken them up, that's it. You can have your shading done in seconds. This also works great when doing back grounds.

I don't get it... how is the Brightness and contrast making the shadow? Do I duplicate the flat colour layer to get this?

Is not that complicated you don't have to duplicate anything (like I said lazier way). Make sure the layer you want to add shadows to is selected first. Then go to image>>adjustment>>brightness and contrast. Like I wrote you only have to adjust the brightness (you are trying to add shadows by making the selected areas darker. Contrast is not part of the deal here). The areas you traced with the lasso tool will become darkened. Let me know how it goes.

oh my god.
You are such a life saver. Really.
It normally takes me like...30 min. to and hour just to shade.
I fail.
Anyway. This is amazing!!!!
