Description
October 6, 2008: I've modified the script to run in GIMP 2.6 (the newest stable version). It should work in 2.4, as well.Let me know if you have any trouble with it.
This simple script is more of a gimic than anything, but it's still fun! It creates an rain-like animation from a single image, just like the one in the preview above. It is based on this tutorial: fence-post.deviantart.com/art/…
This script will not run in GIMP version 2.2. If you would like that script, follow this link: (fence-post.deviantart.com/art/… .
Although scripts of this nature are fun, I suggest taking a look at the tutorial as it's good to know how to accomplish the steps without the script.
Just click on the download link to open the script in your browser window and then save it (File Menu > Save) in your GIMP scripts folder (ie....C
Then, go to the main GIMP window (not the image window) and choose the Xtns Menu > Script-FU > Refresh Scripts and it should appear in the Image Window under the Filters Menu > Animation > Rain...
You set the number of frames the animation will have, how much rain, the blur of the rain, the angle at which it falls, and the speed of the animation. You can also add a border of the chosen color and size (up to 3 pixels wide).
Enjoy!

I'm in the process of uploading all the revised versions of the script. It may take me a few days before I can get them all posted. Sorry about that.

You need to save the final product as a "gif". To test it out before saving it, go to Filters > Animation > Playback watch it work. If it still doesn't appear animated, then something's gone wrong. When you do go to save it, there will probably be a window wanting to know if it should be "flattened" or "saved as an animation." Choose "save as animation." Let me know if you're still needing help.

When the text appears, which is the script, btw, go to file > save and then save it to your GIMP scripts folder (something like this: C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.4\share\gimp\2.0\scripts) then either restart GIMP or, if GIMP is already open, go to Xtns > Script-Fu > Refresh Scripts and it will (or at least it should) appear under Filters > Animation > Rain...
Let me know if you still have trouble.

Try this:
When you open up the script in IE, copy the entire code (Ctrl+A) and then open up Windows Notepad (should be some place like this Start > Accessories > Notepad). When Notepad opens, paste the code (Ctrl+V) into it. Then, go to File > Save As, locate your GIMP Scripts folder (C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.40\share\gimp\2.0\scripts), give the Script a Name (with a ".scm" extension on the end), and then under "Save as Type" select All Files. Hit the Save button. Then in GIMP go to Xtns > Script-Fu > Refresh Scripts and your script should be ready to use.
Let me know if you still have any trouble.

Hi ~ I've been looking around for easy ways to make rain effects, and this is the best thing I've ever seen!!! I'm on IE, so I had to follow the special instructions, but it worked perfectly! I named the script "Rain.scm" and it appeared as "Rain." Also, I realized that after you apply the effect and try to play it back as animation, it's important to "Optimize as GIF" or the rain won't go in the same direction for all frames.
It's just lovely and fun, and I will use it all the time - Thanks so much!

Using the Save As option might work. Just save it to your desktop and manually put it in your scripts folder. If that doesn't work, can you tell me what program is giving you the Save As option? Is it Internet Explorer? Internet Explorer (and Windows programs in general) tend to give GIMP scripts problems. If you can give me some more information, with lots of details about what's happening, maybe I can figure out a solution. I'm planning on doing a script installation tutorial really soon. This seems to be a very common problem.

What are you having trouble with? Installing the script? If so, the instructions are in the deviation comments section, but if you need more help I'll do my best to help you out.

I don't really know how to open it

fence-post In reply to tehfaireh [2008-06-17 00:03:56 +0000 UTC]
It's just a text file. When it opens, save it to your desktop and copy/paste it to your GIMP scripts folder: C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.40\share\gimp\2.0\scripts
Then refresh your scripts by either starting up GIMP or if GIMP is open go to Xtns > Script-Fu > Refresh Scripts and, if you've done everything correctly, it should be ready to go.

Wow thanks!
Oh, how does one install animation plugins? Sorry, newbie at this.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
fence-post In reply to catskullcollector [2008-06-17 00:16:31 +0000 UTC]
Well, plugins install differently than scripts. Scripts can be saved here: C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.40\share\gimp\2.0\scripts Then you go to Xtns > Script-Fu > Refresh Scripts and the script will be available in the location the programmer set it to. Do you have a particular plugin you're having problems with?

Yay for gimp being better \m/

Love it fence, but I have a problem. I can't download it. Some page with a bunch of words comes up and it wont let me download anything now. Do you know why?

fence-post In reply to apollorules [2008-02-13 18:27:12 +0000 UTC]
Hi, there!
Actually, you downloaded the correct thing. A script is simply a text file (a macro, if you will). Just save that file to your scripts folder (someplace like this): C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.4\share\gimp\2.0\scripts
Let me know if you're still having trouble.

Thanks. But, as I said, I'll see if I can introduce some level of randomness into it as I learn more. Random is always more realistic.

Sweet! A long time ago I learned how to make this the 'long' way, it takes forever if you aren't familiar with animation in GIMP.
Thanks for this!
