Description
An Illustration class assignment: produce an illustration to accompany the lyrics to a song of your choosing. The song I chose was "Monsters" by Matchbook Romance. the professor told the class to pick a song that would inspire them, and at first she said my choice of song was "uninspired". I'm not really sure how she's going to like this one considering it contains no allegories to love, references to nature, or visual metaphors.Watercolour on Crescent 310 Cold Press Illustration Board. Original appx. 8" x 10".

Great work and I'm very glad you decided to paint it. Well done, even if I haven't heard the song before. ^^

Don't know the song, but the piece is great! And having the book being the light source turned out great!

I'm not familar with the song at all, so I don't know if it is fitting or not. But regardless, it is still a wonderful image. I do agree with on some minor things you can do to make it stand out more.

Yeah, I remember those... all the kids in my school read "Goosebumps". They were so cheesy but kids bought 'em like hotcakes cause their parents didn't like 'em.

i admit, i bought into goosebumps and R.L. Stine books like no other (was he the one that made the "Fear Street" books for middle school readers/ high school readers?)

(Yes)
I was too busy buying the Mercer Mayer illustrated books and the Magic School Bus series. Maybe that's why I grew up to be such a dork.

oh, if only i stuck with the reading... i wandered off to art stores and comic shops after a certain point (i think it started with those damn pokemon cards ). but dorks are cool now!

My mother never let me buy comics with my allowance. She didn't like all the "violence" in them (I went to a Quaker school for 11 years).

my dad collected them as a kid, as did his father, and my mom had some comics in her magazines from thailand (she would read them to me and my siblings because the stories had some sort of moral to them). so comics was something both of my parents were into... i guess that's why i wanted to draw one of my own for so long
what's different about a Quaker school? i don't really know much about quakers

Quakers preach non-violence, simplicity, and community service.

Your colors add a whole lot to this piece. I like the way the heads seem to be forming because of what the guy is reading. The only thing that I would have liked to see in this is darker shadows, down low, behind the heads of the "monsters"; because the light shining on them would cause them. As it is, there appears to be a very faint light source behind the creatures. No big deal though.
