Description
Finally finished! I tried a lot of new things for this one. For starters, most of the lines were inked in with a brush instead of a quill pen. It kept things smooth and really let the undertone of the colored inks show through. Also I tried to get over my fear of saturated cool colors, something my watercolor professor heckled me about for the better part of two semesters while I was taking his classes.I have fallen in love with Brown Ochre (PY43, sold as "Goethite Brown Ochre" by Daniel Smith). It's semi-opaque and glazes beautifully over just about anything with a soft wet brush over a dry layer of paint. I wonder why I didn't try using it in flesh tones before.
Watercolor, ink, casein on Twinrocker 200 lb. CP watercolor paper.

Yes.
At the same time though, I think a DD would of suited better for something else in your gallery. You've done a lot better than this.
But that's MY OPINION.
You still got one though!

I find the character design unfitting for the drawing.
While it may vary, i find that an eagle would fit in a forest, making hurricanes, rather then tides.
A seagull however....

It's designed after a seagull. A very brown seagull, but still.

Out of GH-MoNGo's gallery, why is this one the DD?
GH-MoNGo definitely has a great and distinctive style - don't get me wrong, as well as a stellar grasp of watercolor, and I would love to see him illustrate a childrens' book about Vikings and trolls and Nordic monsters, and in my opinion, there are other, way better pieces in his gallery. So yeah, sort of scratching my head.

LOL! Take a look at the DDs everyday and you'll see the pattern of stupidity
Somebody just goes, oh this looks nice, or they laugh at it or whatever then go, make this a DD and if the person feels like it they will.
That is my impression of the whole DD thing.
Anyway! I agree, GH-Mongo is a great artist and would make a great illustrator!

I know. And again, I have nothing against your art (I like it, in fact), so my confusion is directed at the DD decision. I'd be totally happy to see one of your storybook-esque monster battles featured, but oh well.
While I'm at it, this piece [link] is pretty damn awesome and it would be great if built off of that sort of style in future works.

We'll see. While I'm in school, I can't really promise much of anything in terms of personal work (four studio classes can really eat up one's time!)

Holy shit, four studios? I had two at once in design school and it was brutal. Good luck with that, seriously.

I'd echo the feelings of @SirBartimeaus .. this piece might be good but certainly not worth a DD.. absolutely not. I hold the creations which get DD in high respect .. and am sorry but this doesn't fit the bill m8.

I will suggest to you what I suggested to him. If you have issues with pieces that are chosen for Daily Deviations, please read FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature? for the proper and more respectful way of voicing your displeasure to the appropriate parties.

I hope a gallery director made a mistake with this, because I do not think this quality of work worthy of being called a "Daily Deviation".
I hope this is an "it was an accident retard". I really do. I really do.

GH-MoNGo In reply to Vilest [2010-03-03 04:28:21 +0000 UTC]
Speaking as a former Gallery Director myself, the selection of Daily Deviations is based purely on personal preference. I understand if you feel my work doesn't fit what you consider to be "quality", but clearly someone felt as though my work was something to be shown to the rest of the community.
Invoking the `guruubii /!ShadowGamers "accident retard" incident is beyond disrespectful, though, not only to myself the artist, but the deviant who suggested the work and the deviant who featured it.
In the future, if you have issues with pieces that are selected for Daily Deviations, please read FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature? for the proper (and more respectful) way of voicing your displeasure.

I'm sorry I have opinions and I don't want to take any affirmative action on my opinions.
You used the term "personal preference". Wouldn't that make a feedback forum to complain via a moot point?

GH-MoNGo In reply to Vilest [2010-03-03 04:40:36 +0000 UTC]
The way you phrased your opinion made it sound like a personal grievance. I do not know what you felt telling me that my work was not to your liking as a Daily Deviation would accomplish, but clearly you felt the need to and you did so. I responded in kind. The way you phrased your opinion sounded more along the lines of a personal attack than an objectively stated opinion (I think it had to do with the whole "accident retard" thing).
Long story short, I hear you, and I don't really care. You're entitled to your views, and I can't do anything about it, so I won't try to.

That's your problem, then, not theirs. I'm pretty sure none of them lose sleep at night because you disapprove of their DD selections.
Why are you wasting your time here trying to spread your bitterness about something that happened three years ago concerning a Gallery Director who is no longer in that position? There's a Complaints forum for that sort of thing. If you don't want to use the proper avenues to voice your displeasure about something, the least you could do is not take it out on people who have nothing to do with the decisions that are made.

Awesome work! I love the mighty feel of this picture conveys. It undoubtly looks badass. Though, I would reccomend you work on your lines, it think it would bring more interest to it. As in, vary it, it seems to me that all the line width feels the same... ( Well more interest ^^)

GH-MoNGo In reply to Sepapa-san [2010-03-03 04:30:31 +0000 UTC]
I understand. I didn't want the line work to overwhelm the paint itself. As it looks now, I tried to vary the line weight with the brush, but I suppose there is always room for improvement. Thanks for the suggestion!
