That's because shperical turn the fractal inside out. maybe you can try to use Curl instead of sphere.
or, if you still want to use spherical, try to render it with chaotica and play with the curve..

I have tried and tried but I can't figure out where I am going wrong here, but it looks nothing like yours. Things seem to go right until transform 3.

sorry for the late reply
what's wrong on your param is that you linked the crop transform (Tx-3) to Tx-2. What you should do is linked Tx-3 to Tx-1:
- Choose Tx-1
go to xaos tab
right click anywhere on xaos tab > add linked transform.
And then you go just like on the tutorial.

That Tx-1=spherical image looks really cool, like a stained glass window mixed with the universe (like a stained glass window showing stars and galaxies).
I don't really do art like this, but I wondered what "splits-crop" meant, so I thought I'd look and see. ^_^"

Splits and crop is a name of plugin that you can use with a fractal making program called #Apophysis . The link to download the plugin is up there on the artist's comment section.
