Description Since my tablet is still down a did a few quick old-school sketches (5-10min).

This my first thought on a baragon redesign. I don't think I have ever drawn Baragon before, and this isn't your typical Baragon. Please let me know you r thoughts.

The only things I'd change: no fur. He's supposed to be a dinosaur. Keep the ears, of course, but the fur has got to go.

Thanlk you for the input, but I am not sure what you mean by "fur." It is a rough sketch, so maybe you have mistaken some of the roughness for fur, but nothing in the sketch is intended to be fur.

OK,I thought so after reading your second post.

(1), (2) and (4)-indeed, your new bust incorporates the aforementioned elements nicely. Glad you find portions of (3) and (5) worthy of consideration as well. And yes, that DOES sound a bit wrong-see what happens when my mind works on the fly?

Interesting revision...I like Baragon, but his design is another of those I have few to no strong feelings about. As such, nothing about this bust seems too outlandish to me.

However, I do have some observations, questions and/or suggestions (of course):

(1) Given the overbite/crocodile-jaw trend you have with Phase-II Gojira, Ghidorah, Rodan and Orga, it might be an effective change of pace to restore Baragon's lips. That underbite, however, would have the bonus of playing up this brute's marked "bulldog" aspect, lips or no.

(2) Paring back the ears may make sense for a subterranean monster, but hey-perhaps they fold up in a manner similar to Titanosaurus' tail-fin. If you do opt to tweak 'em, I'd suggest upscaling 'em by about 25%.

(3) Fur? Between that and the ears, this WOULD lend B-gon a definite resemblance to some drastically-altered mammal or proto-mammal. Clever choice.

(4) However else you tweak the torso & limbs, I do suggest retaining the film designs' infamous "jelly rolls". Perhaps they could form an armadillo-esque layer of dorsal armor.

(5) Vibro-horn? Now THAT, sir, is a tool with some impressive potential. Perhaps in addition to its tunneling capacity, (a) it produces a Daredevil-style echolocation 'map' in conjunction with the beast's razor-sharp auditory range; (b) when plunged into foes it functions like a Star Wars(TM) vibroblade, lopping through nearly everything it touches; and/or (c) Baragon can spike/focus the vibes into an armor-shredding kinetic-shear blast.

...well, despite my lack of strong opinions THIS one sent me off on a spiel, eh? Thanks for indulging.

Thanks as always for the interesting comments, here are my thoughts.

1) I think the bulldog image was what subconsciously made me go with the under bite. Also, the lips are back (somewhat). I did another sketch the next day that I will post right after this reply.

2) I always thought the ears didn’t make sense for a burrowing creature. However, I feel I solved that problem with the vibrating/sonic horn concept. I think I made them a little bigger (if not bigger at least better I think) in the new sketch – let me know

3) I hadn’t thought about fur – I see what it could do for me. I do think of Baragon as some type of altered mammal-thing as you suggest – so at least some hair if not all out fur would be appropriate

4) Yes, I plan on keeping the rolls in some form of armor. I think the new sketch suggest this some as well – even if it is still only the head

5) Well it sounds kinda pornographic when you call it a vibro-horn! I really like the idea of the echolocation map – it goes so well with the ears I am ashamed I didn’t jump to the same conclusion. I haven’t decided if I am going to use this feature to magnify its cutting/piercing combat abilities yet – but it does ask for it doesn’t it.

well, this is pretty nice, but the horn on the nose sort of ruined th burrowing advantage.

hypergojira In reply to hewhowalksdeath [2008-11-09 14:59:22 +0000 UTC]

actually the horn (in my concept) vibrates a frequency that breaks-up or even liquifies the rock, making burrowing easier! That is why it is up front (that and I completely forgot it was supposed to be on the forehead!)

Very, very nice! I like the horn on the nose, though that sorta makes him look like Barugon from Gamera. I like the big fangs on the bottom jaw, and the ears and eyes look good, too.

I'm not to thrilled with the fangs. I like the idea, I just don't think I made them very well.

Horn on nose instead of horn on forehead...it can work. He never really used the thing much anyway. I'd make his ears bigger, thats a major trademark of his. A little rough but its looking pretty decent so far. Wonder how you'll handle the rest of his body.

I completely forgot the horn goes on the head - I didn't look at a reference when I sketched. Regardless, I think it works well here. I'm not sure what to do about the body or how it fits into my kaijuverse yet.

RenDragonClaw In reply to hypergojira [2008-11-08 03:57:20 +0000 UTC]

If he's still a burrower in your kaijuverse, then big claws and a stout body are a must. He'd probably have good night vision or be blind with sonar capabilities since he spends most of his time underground. When you think of Baragon, think reptilian badger. Just make sure he doesn't look like a dragon like mine somehow did.

I plan on keeping it a burrower with big shoulders and claws, but that is all i've got at the momment
