Description
Here is a paper mache Godzilla I made with my sons (3 and 5 at the time). We are supposed to make Gyaos and Mothra as well, but I haven't had the time. It has been over a year since we made this, and they keep bugging me about when we are going to make Gyaos and Mothra. This is based on the original/GMK godzilla

Hi Hypergojira!
I have been searching far and wide on ways to make a paper mache gojira.Β I came across your page and am amazed by your work. I need to make one for an upcoming ChristmasΒ parade but am totally lost on how to make the structure. Can you give me an idea as to how you started it off? I would really appreciate it

Sure! Β Here are the steps I used:
1) I made a full scale (of the model - not godzilla!) drawing on some large paper to get the proportions I wanted. I just made a profile, but it could to front and back if you want to be really precise. Β Or, you can skip this step, depends on how well you build / sculpt.
2) I used armature wire (you can get at Dick Blick's or similar art / craft supply stores) to make a "skeleton." Β I used my sketch to make sure I had the proportions correct. Β I made a rough out line of the profile in the wire and then attached cross-sectional shapes to give it thickness. Β I then did the same for the limbs and attached them to the head/body/tail. Β You can attached the wire with duct tape, thing gauge wire, and/or hot glue. Β This gives you the rough shape and should be self supporting.
3) I taped and glued balls / shapes of crumpled newspaper to fill out the body, tail, limbs and head. Β This makes the "muscles" of the model and reduced the amount of paper mache you need. Β More more detailed areas, hands, head, feet you can use aluminum foil to from the basis of the shapes as it is easy to control.
4) I used the traditional homemade flour paper mache for the bulk of the work using strips of newspaper of various sizes. Β After it dried for about a day I did some clean-up with the homemade paper mache and some instant paper mache (like celluclay or similar) to do some detail work on the head and hands.
5) I made the spines and teeth out of card board and hot glued them to the model.Β
6) I used large marbles for the eyes and painted on the pupils
7) Spray painted the body and hand painted the details. Β I painted the teeth and the large back spines before I attached them to the body.
That is a about it. Β If you have a specific questions let me know! Β Have fun!

I'm based it on a toy of the GMK godzilla, so it is not that crazy.

Thanks, I just hope I can convince my children to build Gyaos and Mothra smaller - but I doubt it.

I don't remember exactly the number of hours, but we made it over 3 weekends. I would guess about 12-16 hours ot total work time.
It took several days for the initial application of paper-mache to dry. I eventually used a hair dryer to get some areas dry.

Technically Mothra is for my wife, so part of me is hoping we don't get that far.
I am more interested in sculpting some smaller but more detailed versions of redesigned Kaiju from my up coming Gojira Resurrection series. But, I know I will have to at least build Gyaos first.

funny
gyaos seems difficult too
why not gamera?
do you do any clay sculpting?

hypergojira In reply to Blackout-11 [2007-07-25 02:16:14 +0000 UTC]
Yes Gyaos will be difficult, but Gyaos and Godzilla are my sons' favorite Kaiju - so what can you do?
I have done a little clay sculpting, but not much. I do plan to sculpt several of my Kaiju redesigns. I am hoping to do them roughly 18" tall with a lot of detail.

Basically the same here. But now that I am 34, have 2 kids, started my own buisness, and will be building a new house shortly, I thought it was a good time try to give it another try!!
I don't think it is technically that difficult - I just never had the patience to develop my skills to the point were I could express in clay what was in my head. But I really want to give it another shot.

Thanks - my kids love it. It is also great fun. I took it to work early one morning and put it on my bosses desk. It scarred the shit out of him when he turned his light on!
