Description
Well here is the next dragon for my project to reconcile the written and drawn description of the Dungeons and Dragons chromatic dragons and eventually produce a Tiamat drawing: [link]I have basically decided to submit all of my sketches before I produce the final pieces because I don't know when I will get my tablet back up and running to finish them.
Well I am not really happy with this one yet and I will probably refine it a bit before I finish it. I like the tail and the neck, but the body, legs and head are not quite correct. The head doesn't look like it belongs on a Great Wyrm (or Ancient in D4e) dragon - it looks to young. Any suggestions are welcome, but keep in mind I'm not trying to really change the reference design. FYI, I did revise the tail some, mostly because I couldn't draw the tail correctly in profile so this was my compromise - but I like it.
I wish I still had my original Monster Manual for reference (the 1977 one). I always thought the white dragon was one of the coolest designs. I am really just trying to copy the current design, but I wouldn't mind bringing back to the original some more if I could. If any one can get me an image of the original design I would greatly appreciate it.

All things considered, this species' compact predatory austerity makes it my hands-down favorite among your lineup. Stout powerful limbs, a reasonably trim torso, those elegant spine/tail-plates & that sleek, sunken-eyed skull (enough alliteration?) just mesh to great effect here. That sharkfin-esque membrane/horn combo provides some simple, classy cranial adornment, and your note to Scatha abut the wings makes perfect sense.
As for reworking the face to befit a Great Wyrm(C)...some scarring & pitted surfaces (cheeks, that sunken spot behind the chin, etc.) might lend that vicious visage still more impetus.

the white dragon design has always been one of my favorite from back when I actually used to play the game (about 18 years ago). I still think there is something missing, but I agree that the bestial nature of the white dragon really shines in this design.
I think I got the head a little closer to what I wanted in the Tiamat version.

Y'know, this one (and the Blue) are too damn good not to fave. Consider that oversight rectified.

Not bad at all. Now, I can say this is a good design.

This one looks really good. I love the shape of the body, and the scutes and scales. The head may look young, but it is pretty nicly shaped. The wings have a nice shape, too, but I sorts second DH about them looking a bit small. Other then those small details, a very nice, solid White design, I say.
They have pics from the 1977 book online, don't they? I think I saw them somewhere. I know they have the Second Edition ones up, and I have that Monstrous Manual myself.

Thanks, I think it needs some more work though. As I mentioned th DH this would be a 145' wingspan on a dragon with a total length of 95'. I think it would look o.k. if drawn in a spread out position. But again, this would be impossibly to small in reality.
Yes they do, I just purchased pdfs of the Monster Manual and Monsterous Manual. I wish I had never given away my originals though.

Ahh, I see. They just look small folded up, is all. I can understand that.
Yeah, I can see why you would be irritated that you gave that away. I saw one in a pawn shop once, and I'm still kicking myself for not getting it at four bucks! >_<

Now, this one I can get behind more.
It captures the sturdy, animalistic manner of the white dragon, and manages to look a lot less sloppy than the 3rd edition design. The classic crest is back and it doesn't look quite as cluttered.

Thanks, I still think it doesn't look quite rugged enough.
FYI, I just downloaded the original Monster Manual in pdf and the D2 Monstrous Manual.

Cool- I like the build of this one a lot. I would suggest trying bigger wings, though. They don't seem quite big enough to lift a beast as sturdy as this. Other than that, great job.

Thanks.
Well, this is a supposed to be 95' long white dragon and the wings are drawn at a 145' wingspan. I think if they were stretched out they would probably look big enough (but of course they wouldn't be in reality).
