This is kind of old, but you never got a real answer so here goes:
Back in the early 2000s, the hard-working staff members of deviantART who, for whatever reason, stopped working for the site were given an alumni status which is very similar to the senior member status. Today, almost all former staff members just get the tick mark.

To be honest, I'm not completely sure what they mean by that, but I'm pretty sure it's people that used to work for deviantART, or it might just be co-founders - I know that °jark , °matteo and °tack all have that symbol...
