Description I get a lot of questions about how I get my lineart to come out looking so professional looking. As promised, I finally got around to doing a tutorial on how I ink. =3 It's not the most complicated way to do lineart in the world, but it works for me. <33

I'm so terrible at explaining things, so if there's any confusion on anything, just let me know. ;3 I'd be more than glad to clear it up. Hopefully it helps though. <33

Finished picture used in this tutorial:

has a really good tutorial up for doing lineart in Paint Tool SAI: [link]
It follows a lot of the same techniques, only it's a different program. <3

Haha, yes! The tablet was from my mom and dad though. ;3 I doubt anyone else would go out and spend that much. xD

D: Ebay can be risky business, but you can score some really great stuff for cheap most of the time too. My mom luvs ebay and orders stuff from everywhere! xDD

ha well that explains how much they love you <3 and when/if i get one it ill HAVE to be of one of them anyway i am too young to save about £70 that is probaby how much you will get one off ebay so i will either have to get it for my birthday or christmas but my birthday is only around 5 weeks away so ill probably have it then ^_^ yes ebay is very risky and something i hate about it is being outbid becasue then you know someone else really wants it and is willing to pay more so yeah i hope i am the only person after one when i go looking XD

yeah my mom loves ebay too at the moment she is bidding on a car (we are still in the lead yay) the car we have right now is old a broken we are going to be selling it to a man so he can use it to do that thing where they drive into each other and smash up the cars XD poor car ha im kinda getting carried off onto a different subject now i am always doing that i just can't help it XD so ima stop right now thankyou

xD Haha, yup, most expensive presents come from parents, cause us kids have no way to get money otherwise. <33 Of course...unless you wanna go out and mow lawns or wash cars, but that's not fun. Well good luck getting one. ;3 They're definitely full of fun and they usually help you improve your arts tons.

Orly? That sounds cool! We've never bought anything like that offa ebay, but I've heard you can. xD Aww, and poor car. c: They used to have those derby things at our county fair and we'd go watch them every year. They're fun but not for the car! x3

yes and there is no way you will be gettin me to wash cars or mow lawns even if i did get paid thankyou yeah what i like most is how people talk about pen pressure because it varies hte thickness of the lines which makes them look really cool oh and thankyou sooooo much for your line-art tut it has helped me alot my lines look alot better now *BIG hugs*

haha yes we have kinda been outbid now though lol oh well XD we are not going to go higher we are just gonna look for one other ways it has gone to over £1500 and we just don't have over that much to spend on a car :/ we still need to save money for our holiday which is in 3 weeks but then we also need the car to be able to get on holiday because the Tax i up soon on our car :/ hmm hopefully we can get one soon we need a big one too a 7 seater as there are 6 of us in the family so yeah there is hopefully one waiting for us somewhere right now but i doubt it 7 seaters are hard to get :/ except brand new ones which are like 5 grand
haha i have never watched one but it sounds funny hehe (wow most writing i have done in a while)

Pen pressure is awesome! Once you get used to it, drawing with a tablet is just like drawing on paper...only digital like. <3

Well hopefully you'll find one. :3 My mom's actually looking to buy a new 2011 mustang like next week and they start at like 23 grand...us dollars of course. xD Not sure why she wants a new car but I dun mind.

Lol, they are. :3

yeah it sounds awesome and fun thats one of the reasons i want one the main reason is obviously to improve and to be able to draw easier it is quite difficult on the touch-pad (thingy on the laptop) because the lines go everywhere

thankyou awesome and wow i don't know how much a dollar is to a pound but that still looks like a lot even if it was in pounds lol maybe she just wants a change

I discovered this tut because of Stearling lol.

Anyway, I love this tutorial, but I have one question. We both share the same versions of Photoshop, PSE 5.0, but I can't seem to find the brush that is shown in here. I searched through all the brush options that came with the program, yet I cannot find it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to evening-lark [2010-08-11 17:24:38 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, my brush tool is right below the eraser on the side tool bar. ;3 The brush tool is a really basic tool, so I'm sure it's there somewhere. xD If I remember, I think it was in the same menu as the pencil tool. Try holding down the pencil tool and seeing if it's one of those options that drop down.

~ Hopefully that'll work

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

evening-lark In reply to KaiserTiger [2010-08-11 17:33:01 +0000 UTC]

No, no, I mean what type of brush you used. Like, all I can use is the basic circle brush that shows up in "default brushes", not the line-thingy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to evening-lark [2010-08-11 17:59:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh, lol. xD The brush I use is just a simple hard round brush aka the default circle brushes. c: I just change the pixel size to '4 px' instead of the preset sizes.

evening-lark In reply to KaiserTiger [2010-08-11 18:29:00 +0000 UTC]

How to you give it what wavey-like look? Or is it already like that when you just click it and draw drawing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to evening-lark [2010-08-12 16:58:47 +0000 UTC]

That's just showing I have pen pressure turned on because I'm using a tablet. c: It won't show up like that if your using a mouse.
I should have mentioned that somewhere.

evening-lark In reply to KaiserTiger [2010-08-12 21:15:03 +0000 UTC]

I'm using a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet, which I believe it has sensitivity (That's what it said in the product's description lol.) Do you know where I can access where I can edit the pen pressure for my tablet?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to evening-lark [2010-08-13 02:30:02 +0000 UTC]

It should show up just like mine then. The pressure sensitivity should be under a menu called "Tablet Options" in the light gray section at the top. Try clicking the arrow beside it and when the menu drops down, make sure everything is unchecked except for 'size'. That should put pen pressure on if your tablet has sensitivity.

evening-lark In reply to KaiserTiger [2010-08-13 22:55:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, it does! This should help me out alot for future drawings.

I did a small feature of this tutorial in the description of my own::: [link]
Mine is for Paint Tool SAI, but since you have one for Photoshop, I thought it proper to let people know about it :3
BTW: I love your line art

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to SterlingKato [2010-08-11 17:11:46 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thanks so much for the feature! It's great to list a few other tuts for different programs on the same subject. ;3 I'll be sure to mention yours in my description too.

And thanks again. ^^ Your lineart is so smooth looking too!

So helpful, thanks a lot, I needed this. My problem is that when I try to ink on my tablet it comes out all wobbly. Any advice on how to make my lines come out smoother so I can stop using the path tool?

w00t, thanks for the tutorial. (: most of what I do's pretty much the same, except for the image resizing/downsizing, and I need to learn how to control the pen pressure, so thanks a lot!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to NikilahProductions [2010-08-11 17:42:50 +0000 UTC]

Haha, np. ;3 The image resizing helps a lot in making the lineart clean looking. D: It definitely makes all the difference.

NikilahProductions In reply to KaiserTiger [2010-08-13 02:45:09 +0000 UTC]

yeah (: although, one thing, do you sketch on Photoshop or scan a hand-drawn picture most of the time?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to NikilahProductions [2010-08-13 17:25:41 +0000 UTC]

I usually sketch in photoshop, but everything will still work the same for scanned in sketches too.

Oddchild-Style In reply to ??? [2010-08-11 00:34:36 +0000 UTC]

do you scan your sketch first or actually draw it on photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to Oddchild-Style [2010-08-11 17:43:37 +0000 UTC]

Most of the time, I draw my sketches straight on Photoshop, but the same method would work for scanned in sketches.

Since you use a tablet and i love ur art....I have a quest, im getting a wacom bamboo fun tablet? Do u recommend those bc it is easier to draw..?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to RedEaglestar [2010-08-11 17:46:41 +0000 UTC]

Tablets make digital art a lot easier in my opinion. I was never able to use a mouse well though. But sure! I know a lot of people who use Bamboo tablets and they say they work great. ;3 The bigger one's are easier to work with though, but any size would be good enough. They're not too expensive either.

totally faving in case ppl who stop by my page want to see it. I think this stuff is important to show people. Its not necessarily complicated, but very useful. I shrink images myself, but I actually never thought to start by sketching on the size of image that I planned to finish with.. xD Usually the entire image ends up much smaller than it ever started in the first place...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserTiger In reply to kiit0s [2010-08-11 17:48:42 +0000 UTC]

I tried that once, but I tend to draw really small as it is, so my pictures came out micro sized. You could hardly see any of the detail I had, especially in my backgrounds. But same here! Sharing techniques is always good. x3

funlakota In reply to ??? [2010-08-10 20:44:27 +0000 UTC]

Personally I'm a sucker for the line tool in Photoshop. It makes the lines straighter and smoother looking when you draw with a mouse. Though doing round edges requires some practice to get them to look right...

Unfortunely there are 2 problems with this in Photoshop: you loss out on the many awesome paint brush effects and you end up with a ton of layers! ( I didn't have the second problem in the first program I used called Photoshop Deluxe though, a very cheap and very old program in the Photoshop line. It was the first editor I used!)

Anyways this is a great tuturial! I used to increase my pictures before inking them, but it's been so long that I've done it that I've completely forgotten about that step. Maybe I should do that again... when I get my own computer of course.

KaiserTiger In reply to funlakota [2010-08-11 17:51:01 +0000 UTC]

My version of Photoshop didn't come with the pen tool, so I never got used to that way of inking. My school's photoshop has the pen tool though, and it is easier to use with a mouse. But you are right about the layers problem. You end up with a ton!

Haha, of course! Hope it helps though. <3

The resizing step helps soooo much in making clean line art! Mine always comes out looking too thick and messy if I don't resize.
