wow i am glad there is someone out there, who is posting a tutorial like this. I tried it a few times to get something like this, but I got problems with the shading and all. Your tutorial really forces me to take another try and maybe i will get it right this time (You did a great job explaining the steps, I looked for a tutorial like this, cause step-by-step tutorials are useless if I want to actually learn brushing). At the moment I am using Fractals to get a nebula but maybe i can change my style and combine Fractals and Brushing. I got a wacom tablet a while ago, but I have problems in painting things the way I want. It would be much easier for me to draw it right on the monitor. But anyways, thank you so much for posting this, i'll try it out right now.

Hi Philip, I'm glad you found it useful and helpful for your art. Sadly I don't work much in sci-fi genre any more but I might still be coming back sooner o later for the fun of it .

Keep up the great work, please do link me artwork you've put together after working the turorial.
Have a nice day,

I will do that yesterday I tried pretty much arround trying to get something that look like yours (it basicly has the same colours and form of the nebula). When i am getting used to it and got the time, I will try to make a new one based on my own style. I think I definitly learned something which is hard for me to explain, but it should help me draw these kind of nebula

Oh yeah, i know exactly what you mean. First time tried to just sign my name on a photo, and damn that took like 30 minutes before I was satisfied with it. Definitely no pencil or pen. >_👍: 0 ⏩: 0

This tutorial is just unbelievably awesome. I like how you wrote vague steps that makes people actually have to work from their imagination instead of following filter after filter and whatnot. This helped me so much, and I feel like I've finally improved on lighting, which is something I really struggled with before. Keep it up!!

Wacom Tablet
is it important for the pen pressure function or because it is more comfortable and you can give the shape you want?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ladyrapid In reply to ItalianDesigner [2011-05-17 08:28:04 +0000 UTC]

Working with pen pressure is the only reason to even start with wacom. It's the closest thing we can use and have for a copy of the original pen.

Also when it comes to drawing you will, when you've learnt the wacom, use it more closer to a regular pen which makes it a more natural movement when working.
A lot of people who works with wacom tend to go over from the mouse and only use the pen. Once you get the hang of it it's actually very smooth, especially with a big monitor and resolution.

Wow, I've been trying to make nebula textures for ages and it never worked out well.
I'm going to try this (and I might try incorporate some fractals too) when my holidays start!

Thank you

Can't see much of the actual sci-fi here but what I do see is that you've missed to center your glow from the stars. This must be dead center due to the circular mass of a star in terms of glow.

Wooooooooow. I've never come across your work before- mainly I was just looking at tutorials and I came across this- it's absolutely beautiful. I'm really into space, I have a huge book on the universe that I recieved as a Christmas present and it's filled with beautiful similar images of deep space from the hubble telescope. It's hard to imagine such beauty exists out there in places we can't even dare to imagine. So space has always been a huge wonder to me. This is a really beautiful and great tutorial- it's really encouraging to become creative when making artwork like this because there's really no end to the possibilities! XD Who knows, maybe I'll get enough gumption to try my hand at it.
