Description
Anybody who's ever seen the Chase will likely tell you about the Mechanoids. A group of human-built robots sent to an alien planet to prepare it for human colonisation, they were forgotten about and consequently, when human actually arrive, no one knew the Mechanoids' programming language anymore and so the robots refused to recognise them. The Chase ends with them going toe to toe with the Daleks and everything goes up in flames.Which is a nice idea, really. Unfortunately...well...they don't look like anything that could ever build a city, much less fight off an invasion by Daleks (then again, this is the Chase, which was more or less an excursion by the Skaro Choral Society than anything else...) with *flamethrowers*.
Yet, there is something rather charming out the rotund stutterers...so I made it my goal to make them somehow practical. And give them a slightly modern, iPod twist. Blame watching a play-through of Portal. I plan to make various smaller varients, designed for the housework. This one, however, is the straight up update.
So let me present the WIP model of the Menoid Industries all-purpose construction mechanoid!
The mechanoids were Terry Nation's idea....I don't think he's to blame for the actual design...

Nothing really. I just thought it was a funny way to describe the all white, seamless look I gave it.

Wow that brings be back. I remember watching the old Doctor Who with my dad when I was little. Just for nostalgia, they should bring the Mechanoids back for the new doctors to contend with.

I agree! Although...you could just have them being there as service robots or something - a nice touch but not necessarily the main point of the story. Then again...when have service robots in Doctor Who *not* gone mad and tried to kill everyone?

Nice practical change to the "hula-hoop" manipulators.

Well, there's not much you can do with a couple of bent bits of wire with a fork in the end that don't even meet in the middle...always thought they were the greatest weakness of the design. There was just nothing there that could make you believe that they could build anything!

They remind me a bit of Ludwig in that 70s children's cartoon, anyone remember it? thought not!

Thanks to the amazing power of the internet, I see what you mean! Blimey. I wonder if the makers ever saw The Chase...

It also looks like Orlov, from that adult's 2010s show, remember that?

Congrats on making the idea workable. I love that episode and I thought there could have been more done in their creation. Love your work. I would have loved to see what Mr. Nation had in mind when he came up with the idea of the Mechanoids.

From what I understand, the actual description in the script is of a 'spinning top' shaped robot. Sounds to me rather like the 'Trods', the Dalek stand-ins from the early Doctor Who comics. And yeah, there's a lot of potential to be had in a bunch of construction robots left to their own devices on an alien planet...

There's a redesigned Trod in there, together with some interesting takes on other Doctor Who monsters. I should acknowledge it as a slight influence on some of my stuff, though I'm not entirely sold on a lot of his design directions.
