Aaaa!! Thank you! You see, I'm planning for my first poseable plush to be a Bearded Vulture, so this helps a lot! I was also planning to make Trico from The Last Guardian so this helps with both of them!!

You just cover the ends to keep the stick in place

hmm do you think this would work with other jaws, maybe? canines/equines, perhaps..I'd love to try it.

I haven't tried it before with other types of jaws. Give it a try! Make sure the lower jaw does not get to heavy!

I recently tried to make a moving jaw, and it failed miserably.Β Your way makes so much more sense!Β I love it!
Thanks for sharing this and all of your other tutorials.Β I never cast my dolls, but maybe I should start!
I also have a lot of plastic eyes, but never have managed to figure out how to get around baking them.Β I think in your other tutorial with the head base, I could insert the eyes into the foam and sculpt around them!Β Wow, this is so helpful for me! <3

I don't recommend putting plastic eyes into the oven! You can use glass eyes, those don't melt! If you put foam into the oven, make sure it is entirely and tightly covered with tin foil, otherwise it might expands from the heat and destroys your sculpt!

LanaLemony In reply to LimitlessEndeavours [2013-10-24 16:14:30 +0000 UTC]
Oh no, that was my point!Β I've never been able to use my plastic eyes because they melt, and they rarely look good when they're not properly sculpted in and baked.
In another tutorial you posted I noticed you made a base that you could slide out from under the clay, though.Β I was thinking I could firmly attach the eyes to the base and sculpt around them, then they could be removed for baking as well.
Sorry I wasn't clearer!

what type of clay would you recommend, because I heard about fimo and super sculpy, but don't know if they work well. Also, do you know what to use to cover the clay so it doesn't get scratched up.

LimitlessEndeavours In reply to Glacialwolf13 [2013-07-14 15:34:45 +0000 UTC]
Both clays work well, but it is about you to figure out with what type of clay you can work best with. After painting clay simply use a varnish to protect it from damage. I hope that helped!

Brilliant tutorial! Ive been really trying to figure out hinge joints on my models. Cant wait to try this! One question, will the beak hold its position when its finished, or will the lower jaw hang?
π: 0 β©: 1
LimitlessEndeavours In reply to Sovriin [2013-04-18 14:13:04 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I sculpted several beaks to figure this out and came to the conclusion, that it depends on the abrasion of the sculpey why some beaks where alright and some started to hang. The more you play with it, the more you smooth the sculpey around the stick - this method is not made for long lasting moving beaks. Some of my beaks hung right after i was done with baking the head - for me personal is it not the right method since i make high quality dolls for my business.
But try and figure out if this method it works out for you I wish you good luck!

Still working on it. A few horrible attempts later, still trying!
There's a reason I don't usualy sculpt with clay. . .. -_-*

Maybe i can help you. What's the problem? Is it the clay you're working with? What clay do you use?

Werewolf-Pirate In reply to LimitlessEndeavours [2013-02-06 06:51:40 +0000 UTC]
I don't know.
It probably involves me using air-drying clay I've had for years. . . . .
(I kinda don't have money to buy more)
I was thinking I could try it in foam. . . my suit head is made entirely out of it, so I know it's moldable (to a point)

LimitlessEndeavours In reply to Werewolf-Pirate [2013-02-06 15:19:37 +0000 UTC]
Air-drying clay is not the right one for this type of sculpting. Use some super sculpey. It is easy to work with - even after baking it. A box sculpey is not very expensive (You always need to spend some money to learn and make progress on your work) so it won't make you broke.
I have not really experience working with foam, but it sounds possible for me! Give it a try!
Let me know, if you have any questions

I don't have the money to buy Sculpty (or any good priced ANYTHING) and I wasn't planning on selling anything.
It was going to be the beak/face of an Archeopteryx fursuit head for myself.
Foam is ok, but for details like yours, you really have to know what you are doing (which I don't) .
Thanks! ^^D

Ah, a fursuit head. Well, this type of making a movable beak is not the right one at all. It won't work for fursuit heads - except you just want to open and close the beak with your hands and not with your jaw. There are better and also cheap ways to do that.
