So, now that the movie is out everyone has been asking when I'm going to do somethign about Transformers 2. Well, this is pretty much how I feel about it. This movie has been so universally hated, so torn apart by every critic and blog as one of the worst movies ever, I really don't think I can add anything. In fact it's almost become an art form of it's own finding as reviewers find new levels of hyperbole to insult the movie.

Though I will say that the movie's supporters generally say things like "It's not supposed to be brilliant, just turn your brain off and have fun!" Sorry but, "turn your brain off" and "have fun" are directly contradictory. I'm not going to give any movie a break and pretend I'm stupid because it has expensive special FX (not good, expensive).

Anyways, it's sort of a sad statement about entertainment when this quality of movie does so well. It's just encouraging studios to abandon plot and acting in favor of girls bending over and junk blowing up.

I find it funny that all the critics hate it and yet everyone I know that has seen the movie really liked or even loved it.

Wow, same exact thing here, ahaha. Critics just hated it because IT WASN'T ABOUT A PREGNANT TEENAGE GIRL or something. Baww.

I thought the plot was pretty decent to be honest. It was no Oscar-winning stuff but they could have done way, way worse.

How about this...

"Revenge of the Fallen"
The movie starts with a shot of The Fallen ranting about Optimus Prime. He then tells Starscream that they must find a way to revive Megatron in order to destroy the Autobots. Cut to Sam driving Bumblebee to college, he gets in and finds out that his dormmate is a geeky kid with glasses and suspenders. The kid tells Sam about how he's been collecting robot evidence ever since they were spotted a few years ago. Suddenly, Optimus shows up and tells Sam about The Fallen's plan to revive Megatron... etc. etc. etc.

See? Told you it could be worse.

Yeah, I didn't see what everyone's problem with the plot was. Okay, it's a movie about Transformers. You seriously expect the plot to be a mind-blowing amazing novel? You're bound to be disappointed if you go in with those expectations.

Even the G1 cartoons weren't Oscar material. They're nostalgic and fun to watch, I'd even go so far as saying I love the stories that they told, but Oscar material it is not. I think most of the fanboys are holding the classic cartoon in too high regard when compared to the scripts of the new films.

I suppose it all comes down to the fact that you can't make everyone happy. I mean GOD FORBID they try to make a movie that doesn't just cater to the manchildren that watched G1 when they were 7. Because I'm sure back then they were extremely interested in the plot and writing of the episodes, and not buying the toys. They wanted to make a movie that would make both fans and non-fans happy, which of course pissed off the fans because it wasn't just for them. I wasn't a Transformers fan before I saw the new movie, but now I'm a huge fan, and I've gone back and watched G1 and everything. I never watched it at first because I WASN'T ALIVE WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT. Which is of course, my fault.

HEY, SAME. I got really interested in the toyline and low and behold one day there was a G1 marathon on TV so I was like "Hell yeah, let's do this." I'll probably get the collection when it's out.
I was old enough to watch the Beast Wars cartoon though, so that's awesome. I remember that was a big thing at my school, one kid had like 20 freakin' toys like the Tarantulas bike. I don't remember a BIT of the plot though.

Nukenai In reply to REVULSIVE [2009-06-29 06:37:44 +0000 UTC]

Transformers has always honestly been about making kids want the toys. Which is why half the cast was killed in the old movie, because they had no idea kids actually cared and were just bringing in the new line of toys.

My sister watched Beast Wars, and I always pretend to pick on her because I'm more of a G1 fan. You know, like those crazy people that think G1 is the only good thing about Transformers ever and everything else is a sin. They're the kinds of people that hated the movies because IT WASN'T JUST A LIVE-ACTION G1 EPISODE BAWWW

Speaking of the movie, I watched the old 1986 TF movie online on MyspaceTv. And then saw some of the season 3 episodes online.

The show REALLY went downhill after that movie.

lol imagine a live action version of the classic G1 movie. Now imagine Stan Bush's new version of "The Touch" playing as Optimus dies. Rap kicks in and all of a sudden Rodimus jumps Megatron and Optimus dies... That would be HORRIBLE!

The cartoons themselves were made after the toys, Henkei just wanted to base a cartoon off of the toyline they created. It's all about marketing! That's not to say they didn't create an amazing cartoon.

You know who I pity, though? GI Joe fans. That live action movie looks like it does no justice.

Henkei just wanted to base a cartoon off of the toyline they created

I don't know what that is supposed to mean, since I don't think "Henkei" is a brand name and the companies who own TFs are Hasbro and Takara Tomy. Takara were the ones who originally made them, but they started out just as transforming vehicles with human drivers. Hasbro saw them at a toy fair, made a deal to market them in America, and hired people to create the storyline we all know and love - a war between two factions of giant alien robots.

Though yes, the cartoon was always an extra long advertisement to sell the toys.

REVULSIVE In reply to Mimi-Sardinia [2009-06-29 17:22:39 +0000 UTC]

Whoops, Henkei is the brand of the toyline in Japan, not the manufacturer. I was thinking of Takara Tomy, I swear, hahaha. Well, thank you for correcting me. I actually didn't know the full story behind it, just that Hasbro got a hold of the Transformers toyline and a cartoon was made after to market them.

Mimi-Sardinia In reply to REVULSIVE [2009-06-29 17:45:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Henkei is like "Universe" on the Universe toyline.

I got most of the info about the history from the commentary on my TFTM DVD, the guy doing the commentary started out with a basic history of how Transformers came to be.

It IS all about marketing, and hell... it works. After the first movie I forced my sister nearly at gunpoint to buy me a Bumblebee figure. Then I collected about 14 Jazzes and a Ratchet... stole her Ironhide, and bought myself a Sideswipe only recently... It's just HYPNOTIZING. I'm also a huge merchandise whore so that didn't help.

I'm probably gonna go see GI Joe for the sheer ridiculousness of it

Oh god, I might see it but I expect nothing good of it, LOL.

After the first movie, I bought Barricade off eBay. I also got Blackout and Bumblebee much later. I recently got ROTF Bumblebee, Soundwave and Optimus too, BUT NOW I HAVE NO MONEY. I really wanna get the ROTF Leader Optimus...

ANYWAY... yeah, check your page comments.

Dude...do you actually think kids and a lot of the fanbase actually give a shit about plot? I grew up on the toys, not the shows, and with the transformers shows that I watched, it was always more about fighting than plot. Loose plot, transforming stuff, and fighting is what I think about when I think of transformers. It's an excellent movie, they even managed to fit in the Arcee unit, even if she was triplets.

petrichild In reply to MattMoylan [2009-06-29 06:30:52 +0000 UTC]

It had a plot, a loose one, but it did have a plot. But I didn't go to the movie for plot, I went to the movie for Transformers.

Wouldn't it have been better if it was a good-looking movie AND a just a good movie? I think you have way too low of an opinion of what TF can be dude.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

petrichild In reply to MattMoylan [2009-06-29 07:48:16 +0000 UTC]

No, I don't. I have a low opinion of what most directors and writers can do with something that has to be as fighting and, well, Transformers intensive as TF is. They can choose epic story, or epic Transformers stuff, but I doubt if they can do both.

The only thing that dragged it down was the choice of humour...It was like a bunch of Perverted imature geeks...*sigh*

What can you say?

But the movie in general, I disagree. I Really really liked it, and I would have paid to see it again.

THANK YOU! To truly have fun, you need to enjoy the movie intellectually as well as emotionally. Turning your brain off is NOT an option.

Good luck trying to get this through the TFW2005 blockade. That movie is better than God according to them, because they allow no negative comments on it at all. *rolleyes*

"To truly have fun, you need to enjoy the movie intellectually as well as emotionally."

I disagree, actually.

That would force me to raise my standards a bit too high. And then I'll end up nitpicking every little itty-bitty thing that's wrong. And I don't want to do that. If I have to leave my brain on all the time, that's what might happen.

I mean, I enjoyed the first Michael Bay Transformers movie. At least it had Peter Cullen.

MattMoylan In reply to TM2DB [2009-06-29 05:48:21 +0000 UTC]

Yep well, the hardcore TF fanbase will accept anything.

On a side note(little rant here), this was the reason the Dreamwave TF comics died when Brad Mick came on board. He wrote a book that ONLY diehard TF fans could understand or enjoy. He totally alienated the 2 other markets we had added to the books (comics fans, and average joes) under Sarracini's run, and sales for the book plummeted to 1/4 of what they'd been. Mick is largely responsible for the fall of Dreamwave.

Okay end barely related rant heh.

Simon Furman said Pat would work for IDW 'over my dead body'

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MattMoylan In reply to PKBitchGirl [2009-07-12 17:10:56 +0000 UTC]

Well DW failed because

1. The two owners were terrible at managing money (we did not need a 20k+ per month office space for example)

2. Brad Mick & Adam Patyk killed the TF comic franchise sales

Which of course resulted in the end in a lot of people not getting paid.

Am I the only one in the world that didn't think Skids and Mudflap were racist? I saw them more as just... stupid. I didn't hear a huge uproar about Jazz's gagsta talk in the first movie, but everyone is so up in arms about the twins.

I did think there was way too much swearing, and too many dirty jokes, though. A few is alright but... sheesh :/

Well it they had actually been likable and amusing I wouldn't mind it...but for supposed comic relief they're not funny. at all. More like 2 dimensional caricatures that spout random swear words and aren't too bright. Note I didn't say "racist". I'm not even going to go there

Yeah, I mean at first it was like LOL FUNNY GUYS SWEARING HAHA but then like... okay after a solid hour of it, I really can't stand anymore. I didn't understand why they called Sideswipe SIDESWIPE if there was no Sunstreaker. Seriously, they could've made him like... Revamped Jazz, or just have called him PROWL or something. Or even Tracks, sheesh.

I think Michael Bay first picked the GM models he liked, and then pulled autobot names out of a hat. I wouldn't be surprised if he chose to call the car Sideswipe simply because he thought it sounded cooler than Tracks.

One also has to remember where the twins got their knowledge of english from - the internet. They could have ended up with any sort of stereotypical accent and speech pattern and if it hadn't been the one we saw, then likely critics would have been yelling just as loudly at what they might have ended up with.

As someone on my LJ flist posted on the subject, even the actors who voiced them (one being a black guy) didn't consider them racist, just posers.

As for the bit about them not reading, it was referring to the language of the Primes - that's like a human shrugging and saying they don't understand Latin, and I'm sure there's a lot of people around who can do that without it reflecting on them badly, hell I don't understand Latin!

Jazz talks like an 80's rapper, there's nothing negative about it.

the twins are just walking negative black stereotypes.
