Description This is a thankyou to all my watchers. After 3 years being asked to make a tutorial, it's finally here lol. Yeah a bit late and everyone has probably advanced past this tutorial level, but i hope it helps some artists nevertheless.

I don't enjoy lineart so I'm using this recent one [link] and re-coloring it different from the original.

This is my full process of coloring lineart. I don't always use this process, but these were the same steps i used when coloring the original which can be seen here: [link]

It didn't turn out as well as the original, but i rushed it as much as possible cause i just wanted to focus on the process and it's the 2nd time to color the same thing. This took me about 6 hrs straight to fully write up and color so i apologize for spelling, grammar or just not understandable cause i haven't double-checked.

Feel free to ask questions!

This is just lovely. I really like how you added in the different textures and how well you explained everything from the coloring, lighting, to the brushes you use for everything.
Lovely job overall with this tutorial. I might try this out some time. :]

I have a question. How do you make the shades with a smooth effect so it can fit well in the picture? I tryed doing step 3 and 4 (light and shade) with the respective colors and it looks quite solid between one color and the other. Blur doesnt help, and I want to make it work by the way you are teaching, so I avoid the dodge and burn tools

Thanks in the upper hand for the answer

its like an intense form of darken. . . im not sure exactly how it does it, but generally with black or dark colors, that is what it ends up like.

How do you clean up a lineart? And, how long did it take you to do this (not the tut, the coloring)?

I found this really helpful, actually a totally different way to how i do things but i'm just starting out with the tablet side of colouring. Nevertheless, thank you. I will definately have a go at your techniques and probably find i'm doing it all wrong!!

Nirodragon [2007-11-19 05:47:15 +0000 UTC]

This is great! I'd found this by searching for lineart, finding the lineart you used for this, and going to your gallery from there.

It'll be awesome to practice with that, so I can make a comparison

Really fantastic tutorial. :] I just got a tablet and I've been looking for ways to improve my digital art.

I have one question though, if you've got a moment- what exactly is this technique you're using with the Eye Dropper? I'm not entirely sure what it is you're doing there, though I really like the outcome.

Thanks for your time.

minties In reply to HollowAgain [2007-11-08 05:24:21 +0000 UTC]

Eye dropper is a tool that picks the current color your cursor is on, i think most drawing apps have this tool.

HollowAgain In reply to minties [2007-11-08 05:26:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, I know that. I just meant the technique you were using with the eye dropper, for the hair and skin strokes? I don't quite understand that.

Sorry, in section 6 I've eye-dropped where the icons are shown in the example and then draw a stroke following the red arrow.

Hey, just wondering, could you do a tutroial for those of us that don't have a tablet and are trying to do art with just a mouse? I need to learn how to do hair with just a mouse and it's driving me crazy.

jouzinka In reply to DemonShuriken87 [2007-12-02 12:27:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, I am personally trying to color this piece with just a mouse as well and it's driving me crazy too. But I use a lot of Smudge tool, since it can better simulate the Pen Pressure, than drawing with brushes, which you decrease. You can also help yourself a lot with Shadows/Higlights drawing just with Black and White color and setting them different blending, rather than again drawing the Shadowed/Highlited areas with different colors.

Hope this comment makes sense and helps a bit.

that's ok, but it tends to desaturate your colors, so while the resampling and going more intense takes more time, it tends to look better in the long run.

minties In reply to RieiRed [2007-10-22 10:56:06 +0000 UTC]

You can do with a mouse too but maybe with a different approach. One way would be to set your brush flow or opacity on low and do multiple strokes over to get the blended effect as an alternative to pen pressure.

Im having trouble at 2:3, you say you should block in the colors, I think Im having a bit of language problem, 'cause you can't have multiply, the colors go through the background and gets darker, and you can't paint it in normal, what exactly do you mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

minties In reply to Cappocat [2007-10-10 15:09:01 +0000 UTC]

Sorry bout that, your not the first to ask. I meant "block in" as in "draw/color in" with a hard brush at 100% opacity and flow, like color flattening. So you don't change any layer properties here.
