Hey, uhm, mind helping a stranger out? I'm not sure how to sew the double-wide-prosthetic piece to the rest of the prosthetic fin assembly. I've got one side sewn to one of the prosthetic parts, but if I fold it over and sew it to the other prosthetic part, I'm still going to be left with a visible seam.

Can you tell me how to put in the tail fin in the back? Every time I try, the tail is really hard to sew in because its stuffed.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to SilverDragonFox [2011-07-17 04:51:44 +0000 UTC]

You just have to really squeeze it in there. I only had to do one side of the tail fin, not both so it'd be much harder to do both sides.

SilverDragonFox In reply to nooby-banana [2011-07-17 17:21:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I'm doing two fins instead of one being a prosthetic. At the rate I'm going, I might just have to hand sew it.

Can you explain to me what top stitching is? Sorry, I'm a n00b at sewing. Also, I've been sewing this all by hand, because I don't have a sewing machine. Can I still do topstitching?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to chibiviolinist [2011-06-30 03:17:46 +0000 UTC]

Topstitching isn't about sticking two pieces together like other stitches, it's more decorative. And it can totally be done by hand. Just put your needle through both layers of the fin (after you've turned it right side out) and do a small backstitch following my guide lines. It just creates an indent along the stitches that makes for more visual appeal.

Yeah all the pieces are linked in all 6 parts of the tutorial.

Kisala [2011-04-01 14:34:50 +0000 UTC]

one question so far: are the pieces in proportion to each other, and what would the dimensions be for this exact model

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to Kisala [2011-04-01 15:29:36 +0000 UTC]

Yes, the pieces are all in proportion to each other. If you resize the images resize them equally. The end plushie is 3 1/2 ft long.

Ira-Dracona [2011-03-27 10:46:51 +0000 UTC]

When you say about layering the pieces of the fins, is that overlapping separate parts by cutting the fabric as three separate pieces where the double lines are?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to Ira-Dracona [2011-03-27 17:35:26 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I understand your question. What do you mean by "double lines"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ira-Dracona In reply to nooby-banana [2011-03-27 18:32:46 +0000 UTC]

On the tail fin and 'butt' fin there are sets of two parallel lines that have a narrow gap between them. I was wondering if those were meant to be veins of some sort (If so that makes much more sense to me than folding the wings to create veins, because I don't understand how to do that at all)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to Ira-Dracona [2011-03-27 18:35:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they're meant to be veins, but don't cut on those lines. Instead, just do topstitching. Only cut around the edge of the fins.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ira-Dracona In reply to nooby-banana [2011-03-28 20:51:38 +0000 UTC]

Okay, thank you ^^

Could you explain to me how to do the wing veins? Because I don't really understand from the tutorial. Sorry to be such a bother, I just find it difficult to follow instruction and pictures for things like this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to Ira-Dracona [2011-03-28 21:59:05 +0000 UTC]

I'll try to explain some more, but I don't know how much clearer I can be. You mark on the wing where you want the vein to go with white chalk so it can wash off, and then fold it along that line and pin it. Then just put it through the sewing machine along the fold so when you unpin it and open it up one side of the wing will have a sort of "tube" on it and the other will be flat... Not sure if that makes more sense...

Ira-Dracona In reply to nooby-banana [2011-03-29 13:57:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, thank you ^^ That makes a lot more sense. Just tried to visualize it with some paper and it seems really clear now.

Thank you very much! I promise not to bother you from now on ^^

What size do all the patterns need to be printed out as? (Including the ones on the other tutorials)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to CreepingBoNE [2011-03-14 16:50:12 +0000 UTC]

Just paste all the images into Word and resize them to fit the whole page. That will have them printed out to full scale. All the pieces are proportionate, just too small because Photobucket made them smaller.

>.> I really don't understand the prosthetic tail. what fabrics is it made from and how exactly does it sew together? could you show a close up of toothless' tail or something. I really need to see it on the actual thing i'm working on. Sorry for the confusion! DX

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to Falling-Pixie [2011-01-03 05:53:37 +0000 UTC]

I just made my prosthetic tail from fleece cause it was cheapest and easiest, but others have made it from fake leather and it seems to work fine.

I'm actually away from my plushie until the 9th, but I could try to help you out until then without pics. The fin part sews together just like the other fin, and then you take the pattern piece called "prosthetic" and cut out two of those. Then sandwich the fake fin between the two pieces along the flat side and sew them together. It'll be kinda thick so take it slow. Then you should have a fake fin with two rectangle flaps on either side. Let me know if you can't figure out the rest from the tutorial, or if this didn't help at all.

Falling-Pixie In reply to nooby-banana [2011-02-06 03:04:54 +0000 UTC]

i think i may make mine from leather in the future but for now i'm sticking w/ the soft fabric! ^^ (i may even make a saddle! X3)

um, i'm still confused a bit. is there suppose to be a long piece lining the tail? more then the piece you labeled as prosthetic? if you could post (it doesn't have to be here) a pic of his fin alone.
it's ok if i don't get it or you don't have a picture. i have an alternate way in my head. XD lol
