Here's part 3! I was going to include the fins and spikes in this one too, but I'm trying to keep each part about the same size. So those'll be in part 4, wings in part 5 and stuffing and sewing the head on in part 6. So just ignore the part at the beginning that says you need the fin and spike pieces (except for the leg spikes).

Print out all these pieces just like with the head pieces.

I'm having a hard time getting the spikes for the arms to come out the way I want. Β Am I screwing up by having them be the same material as the rest of him, or do I need to hand-sew that part in order for it to work?

alrighty. a word of warning. i started this beasty with what i thought was a wonderful idea- "what if i make him TWICE as big?" like, what could go wrong, right? a six foot cuddly dragon to sleep on my bed, how lovely! so i went out on black friday and got seven yards of fabric (one in red) just to be safe. it was cheap, so why not? and i came home on monday and thought, "well, i should start scaling up these pattern pieces!" and i started with the head. that went fine, it was actually great, two hours of work later and i had a beautiful dragon head.Β
now, to this point, i'd been scaling everything up to 200%. double, yeah? double. and 3 feet x 2 = 6 feet, right? here is my warning: math is a lie, 3x2=/=6. i mean, i thought the head looked kinda large. but in my eagerness, i shoved that thought aside and started part two.Β
please understand, i'm not a tall person- five foot three on a good day, five foot two the rest of the time. i expected the belly piece to turn out about as large as me.
it did not. it came out to very, very close to seven feet long. at this time, i'm thinking, "jesus christ, i didn't buy enough flannel." i ended up making the belly out of black curtains from my last house, which is fine. it's a nice contrast in texture to the soft fuzziness of everything else, and it's more suited for the floor it might be sitting on. but please understand what this means- the whole thing is gonna be nine feet long, with a ten-ish foot wingspan. odin help me.
it's wednesday night and between this and school i've gotten a total seven hours of sleep. i'm about to move on to part four- tail and spikes. i have to order more flannel for the wings- i bought out my local joann's- and approximately twenty pounds of polyfill for the rest. i've already got a beanbag to rip apart for the feet, but i'm honestly concerned. where is this dragon gonna live? how many times am i gonna poke my fingers with stray pins? will my room ever NOT be covered in paper and fabric scraps after this?
and god, god bless my sewing machine. this poor thing is twenty five years my senior and is still trucking on for my sake. i feel like i need to apologize to it.Β
do i regret this? no. i'm going to have the sickest dragon imaginable and i'm gonna be able to say "i'm fifteen and i made this in a week and you can suck my ass" and i'm going to enjoy every second of that bragging because i have honestly earned it. do i wish it wasn't ruining my sleep pattern, my fingertips, and my back? yes. yes i do.Β
good luck and godspeed to anyone who tries this out. maybe scale it to like, 130% instead. unless you're fond of the levels of hell called "huge pattern drafting" and "black thread on 15 yards of black fabric", in which case, go for it. welcome to hell! welcome to hell!

I'm really glad you said this.. Because I was like " I want a huge toothless thats like twice as big as this and its gonna be huge and cuddly!" But now I'm not too sure that I want him exactly double the size >-<

How do you sew the leg pieces on without fabric overlapping? If they overlap, that will show even when you turn it right-side out?

The fabric should overlap on the inside of the leg by quite a bit, if you still need help I will link some pics

What are the sizes for the body pieces? That's what me and myΒ mom are so confused about, because everything that people make has sizes and we need to know them to be able to make this.

hi i just wanted to say with the sizing i know it is complicated and confusing but the dragon (if you print out each piece, or each link out on a regular A4 piece of paper) it will turn out to be a meter or two long dragon my mom and i where also confused but now we understand!
hope this helps!

How do you add the leg parts onto the main body pieces? If you just line it up, then there is no fabric to sew over. But if you lay the leg over the body pieces, then the fabric you overlap hangs out over the finished leg.Β

Madskull00 [2013-04-22 14:16:28 +0000 UTC]

Why is it when i sew the leg parts on, and flip them so they are right-side out, there is always fabric that hangs over the top. it's very annoying, and i'm not sure how to sew them on without this happening. I don't want to cut the excess off, because then the seam shows, and it makes it look messy and uneven. Any ideas on how to properly sew them on so this doesn't happen?

I'm making a REALLY big one and this is my 2nd plushie but I'm using a sewing machine (my claws are big enough so I can use a sewing machine). Even though I had only just finished my pattern today my mom hasn't gotten the stuff that i need. Oh I measured my pattern and my wing-span is 4.8 and my body is 3. something. P.S I'm only 11😸

heyo dude, i love your designs and im making my own toothless, heh heh funny thing i didnt tape the pieces together, so he'll have several body parts.
I had a question about the claws, how do you get them right side out and, should they line up straight?

nooby-banana In reply to ToothlessFury [2012-08-29 04:46:21 +0000 UTC]

To get them right side out I used a pencil to kind of poke it through. It's difficult and slow, but it IS possible. But what do you mean "line up straight"?

i don't understand the diagram.
do i sew th body the same way as the belly, and then just sew them together?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to sparkly55123 [2012-03-27 19:52:20 +0000 UTC]

Basically, yeah. You'll end up with two body pieces with legs attached and a single belly piece with legse attached, and then just line up the legs and sew it up along the red line.

i have a question with the leg pieces
for the inner legs, they have convex ends so they don't line up with the leg sockets.
also the outer legs have these little dashes at the ends, what do these mean
sorry
i just want to get it right before i start sewing

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to Wolpertinker [2011-12-19 06:26:35 +0000 UTC]

The little dashes are where they should line up with the ends of the leg sockets.

Do you mean the concave ends? I'm not really sure what you mean when you say they don't line up.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Wolpertinker In reply to nooby-banana [2011-12-19 13:20:22 +0000 UTC]

You know on the inner leg pieces how the ends that attach to the body curve inward instead of out
Do you just overlap the inner leg with the body socket opening till it covers it?
Sorry if that doesn't make sense
:s

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to Wolpertinker [2011-12-19 21:45:02 +0000 UTC]

Just place the inner leg on the belly piece, right sides together, and line up the edges. Use lots of pins!

ApplesforAnna In reply to Wolpertinker [2012-07-22 04:11:56 +0000 UTC]

I used leather too! To turn them out i used these thin metal metal chopsticks i own, and a long thin nail, like the kind for wood. Well first i used the nail, but i hurt myself, so i switched to chopsticks.I hope that helps.

I tried., but I think the fabric is to thick to do that.,
so I found out another way to do it from the outside and still be kind of invisible

So I started looking ahead into the rest of the tut, and I was wondering- would there be any disadvantage to making and attaching the wings at this point while the body pieces still aren't sewn together along the top? I ask because I'm using a machine and really hate the idea of so much hand sewing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nooby-banana In reply to Emrelda [2011-08-30 00:27:44 +0000 UTC]

The wings are meant to be hand sewn on. There's no seam provided to sew them on with a machine.

Hi, I just wanted to check, since I'm using fabric that has two different sides, in this tutorial, am I correct in thinking that I should be seeing these patterns as if the 'wrong/in' side of the fabric is on the outside. Pretty sure that's the case, as that's what would make sense when it got turned right side out, but thought I'd make sure! thanks

Caelestys [2011-07-08 09:31:55 +0000 UTC]

I'm noticing that the foot bottom doesn't fit. I stretched it while I sewed, but the leg kind of rolls around it so that toothless would be standing on a little bit of the leg, if that makes sense? Is that supposed to happen or should I cut out a larger foot bottom?
