Wow, this tutorial is amazing! It really helped me. ^^
May.. May I be as blunt as to ask a question though?
When making the lines for the hair, I've always wanted to add that effect on the hair with the 'simulate pressure on', such as your first drawing at the end. However, when I do so, the line starts so thin that it's impossible to see, gets really thick, then ends so thin that it's good as invisible again, and it ends before the end of the end of the pen-tool's line. So the line's look rather ugly, and are extremely short -in contradiction to the nice, smooth, long lines you use for the hair-.
Now I've fiddled around with it a little, but I can't seem how to make it work. So.. Any suggestions or ideas? ^^"
I'm sorry if I sound stupid, or if this made no sense at all. x'D

No worries! Here's the problem--I think--and a solution. :3
If your line is super thin at the ends, you need to edit your Minimum Diameter settings in the Brush Palette. On a scale from 0-100%, a Min. Diameter of 0 is the thinnest/most tapered, and a Min. Diameter of 100 is not tapered at all. So, 50% might be a good place to start. :3
As for the center being really thick, this probably means that you're using a brush that's too large. For example, if you have a brush set to 20px and a Min. Diameter of 0%, it will probably be really thick in the center and super thin on the ends, as you said. Try to find a balance between the two settings. A 4-7px brush at 60% MD was most likely what I used for the hair in the piece you described, so it might be helpful to start there and then make your own adjustments. :3
I hope this helps!

Hello there, Popo-Licious! This tutorial was so helpful, I'm not sure you've got any idea.
I had a quick question about a problem I'm having - perhaps you've answered it already, but I haven't finished looking through all the replies yet.
When I try to set my brush tool up to simulate the pressure, that infamous little triangle appears next to the Pen Pressure drop-down. I do have a tablet, but the Photoshop version I'm using is CS5; it didn't look like too many people had problems with that one. o 3o;;
Do you think this has something to do with my tablet? If so, is there another way I can go about setting up the brush tool, without using the tablet? Thanks so much for your help!!

I'm so flattered that you enjoyed my tutorial so much! I'll do my best to help you. :3
First of all, have you tried restarting Photoshop and/or your computer? Sometimes Photoshop doesn't load properly and simply exiting the program and bringing it back again can help. If you've tried this and it hasn't worked, have you updated all your drivers for both your tablet and Photoshop? If you haven't done that in a while, that's a good place to start, especially with your tablet. Please let me know if any of these solutions help. If not, I'll help you research a few more solutions. :3 (Because you're just so darn polite and I really appreciate that.) XD
Also, if you could please tell me what sort of tablet your using and what OS, that would also be helpful. :3

You've already done so much! ^^
To be honest, I'd just installed the program and the tablet into the laptop I'm using today. The tablet probably could use some upgrading. x3 I will get to work right away on making sure everything is up-to-date!
Let's see, this laptop uses Windows 7, and the tablet is a... Wacom Bamboo? I'm not sure if you needed anything more specific than that. I'm a total noob at figuring these things out.

Popo-Licious In reply to GrasslandOrange [2010-11-27 05:08:54 +0000 UTC]
Ah! I'm almost positive its your drivers then. If you haven't done so already, go HERE and put in the appropriate information about your tablet. You'll probably see several drivers listed. Start at the bottom of the list and make sure you instal everything in order. Restart, check your Photoshop updates, and restart again if you update anything. You should be good to go after that, but please tell me if you run into any more trouble. :3

The Elements series does not have the Pen Tool. You'll need the full version of Photoshop or the CS series. :3

I can't click on the minumium diameter in the brush pallette i'm using photoshop CS5 btw
and whenever i lineart finish my work, all the the lines would be equally the same and thick
what should i do to make it as thin and natural like yours? >.<
π: 0 β©: 1
Popo-Licious In reply to MehnessRAWR [2010-11-14 06:28:19 +0000 UTC]
Are you using a tablet? If so, is there a warning icon near the Minimum Diameter option? If so, that means that Photoshop isn't picking up Pen Pressure. Also, unless you made a typo, it sounds like you're trying to change the settings after stroking the line. You need to make all your adjustments before hand. :3
π: 0 β©: 1
MehnessRAWR In reply to Popo-Licious [2010-11-14 07:34:36 +0000 UTC]
Nope im not....
So i all i gotta do is just adjust the brush size before lineart-ing? o.o
π: 0 β©: 1
Popo-Licious In reply to MehnessRAWR [2010-11-14 17:16:07 +0000 UTC]
Yes. If you want to change the minimum diameter, you need to do so before you stroke the paths. If you can't change the minimum diameter at all, then that means you don't have pen pressure.

OHHHH! OKAY ! I finally get it now! Thanks for explaining Can i ask one last question? How much do u change ur minimum diameter to...?
