At 100%, it's a normal line. At 0%, it's super tapered. Use the preview and play around with the numbers until you find the settings you like best. 50% is a good place to start. :3

...Oh my god. This would have made my life so much easier. I can't believe I actually used shift+click for so long, when this is at least twice as fast. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

Thank you so much. ;A; I've always avoided using the pen tool because I didn't know how to use it. But now that I know how, I can start practicing! β™₯

um, for step 4, each time I make the curve, it fills colour into a semi-circle; I may have my settings on standard but could there be something I don't know I did?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Popo-Licious In reply to icyyyyy [2010-11-10 23:40:43 +0000 UTC]

If it fills color, then that means you're either hitting "Fill Path" instead of "Stroke Path", or you need to double check your settings in step one. Make sure all your selections look like the ones I've circled in the first step. :3

sooooo coool but when i try to stroke path it come up with stroke unpath (and it wont even let me press that)

Popo-Licious In reply to skullrag [2010-11-04 20:24:45 +0000 UTC]

'Stroke unpath'? I'm not sure what you mean by that. If you could send a screenshot, or be more descriptive, that would be really helpful. :3

skullrag In reply to Popo-Licious [2010-11-04 21:04:21 +0000 UTC]

under fill path (or 'fill subpath' as mines called) the button called 'stroke path'('stroke subpath) is light gray so i cant select it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Popo-Licious In reply to skullrag [2010-11-04 23:37:46 +0000 UTC]

Ah! Alright... I can tell you why you keep getting the sub-path option, and that might fix your other issues. :3 First of all, are you working with the Path Palette open? If not, open it up. (Windows > Paths) Make a new path layer and then try making a path with the pen tool. If it asks you about sub-paths, this means that your trying to create a new path on a path layer that's already being used by another set of points/etc. Each time you make a new path, you want to make sure that you're also using a new path layer.

If this still doesn't work, make sure the that regular layer that you're drawing on isn't locked. (Windows > Layers) The other issue might be that you removed the path before stroking it, though I highly doubt that's the case. Make sure that your lines/points/etc. are still on the page when you try to stroke. :3

See if this helps!

Helo... This is such an amazing tutorial! I never enjoy using pen tool before... It is so confusing... But I have problem in setting the brush, right after I stroke the path, choose brush, and stimulate pressure, I couldn't modify my brush set, they are all gray and unclickable... What should I do

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Popo-Licious In reply to kawai-asachan [2010-11-04 15:09:24 +0000 UTC]

Well... unless you just typed things incorrectly, you're doing things in the wrong order. ;D Make all your brush changes first, and then you stroke. When you have the pen tool selected, you can't make any changes to the brush settings. :3

Brilliant tutorial! But I seem to be having a problem: Instead of looking smooth at the ends, my lines sort of get blotch and pixelated as they taper. Do you know if this is a settings problem? (Or is it because I've got a hacked copy of CS4? >.>)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Popo-Licious In reply to turqteischa [2010-10-28 01:11:02 +0000 UTC]

Can you send me a screenshot? If not, make sure that your brush is set to default. :3

turqteischa In reply to Popo-Licious [2010-10-28 06:41:34 +0000 UTC]

[link]

See how the white path and the red path taper funny at the ends? How they look pixelated? That's what I'm talking about.

By the way, thank you very much for your quick response. You're super!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Popo-Licious In reply to turqteischa [2010-10-28 14:37:46 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm. I've actually never seen these results before, although I notice that your brush palette has a warning icon next to your pen pressure settings. That could be part of it. Unfortunately, CS4 is notorious for not responding to/not responding correctly to pen pressure. I don't have that program myself, so I suggest updating all your tablet drivers to start with-which will hopefully remove the pen pressure warning--and make sure you're using a default brush. (Anything on the first row of the brush selector.) To be honest, because your pen pressure shouldn't be working due to the warning symbols, I'm not sure how you managed to stroke a tappered line. :0

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

turqteischa In reply to Popo-Licious [2010-10-28 15:23:43 +0000 UTC]

Nah, tablet drivers wouldn't be the problem since I don't have a tablet. I guess it's just funky because it's a hacked copy. Thank you for your time, though.

You're welcome! And I hope you figure out your pen pressure... Older version of Photoshop might support the combination of pen pressure and the pen tool, so I would do some research. :3

unfortunately your text is too hard for me to read without eye strain. It's nearly the same shade as the background color! Why did you do it that way? My guess is that you have terrific eye sight and have somehow overlooked the fact that not everyone is so fortunate. A pity. I'm still learning to "become an expert" using the pen tool and thought one more tutorial would help. I guess there are others but I really wanted to read yours because of the rave reviews. Although I have been up all night so maybe after I get some sleep I'll be able to read it easier. Sleep deprivation affects one's entire body.

Thanks for the long, overblown comment about the text, but most of the other 40,000+ people out there who've viewed this can read it pretty well, so I apologize, but I have no plans to change the text. If you have an image editor handy, you can copy + paste this in there and try to alter the color settings. :3
