This helped me very much! I though this tool is unproffesional, because it has low settings, but you showed me I'm wrong!
Thank you very much!

I keep seeing all this "paint tool SAI" work and it's nice and all...but I don't have it or want to download it. >_> Plus, I know I can get the same, or better, results in Photoshop. You have proved me correct.

Thanks a lot i have always known what the pen tool does but i was unaware of how to stroke the line On a side note if you are using GIMP then you can simulate pen pressure without a tablet

Oh? That's cool! I've never used GIMP so I didn't have much to add about that program. XD

lol no problem! I just saw this tutorial and felt inspired to go try it (i have been struggling to find a good way to make lineart and thoguht this might work) but i only have GIMP (yup i'm cheap like that)
So by chance i checked the pen pressure" button and it worked lol It isn't quite as nice int hat you can't make a minimum radius and such but other then that it appears to work well
When i finish the lineart i am attempting ot make i'll link to it

Very helpful tutorial! I'm mostly an illustrator user, so I know how to use the pen tool well, but I didn't know all these things about this tool in photoshop (never known it could simulate pression, and it's very useful for line-art!).
So, thanks a lot! ^^

For some reason, the "Stroke path" option isn't click-able when I right-click on my canvas after I finish creating the path. Would you know why?

Your layer is probably locked! :3

bllueart In reply to Popo-Licious [2012-09-08 15:32:07 +0000 UTC]
The layer doesn't seem locked.
I "print-screen"ed it. If it's not too much trouble, could you look at it here: [link] and maybe find what I did wrong, please? I'd really like to learn this so I'd really appreciate it :3

It looks like you're drawing on some weird layer mask instead of a regular layer. >o< Delete the layer you have marked as "Shape One" (you might have to click twice since there's a layer and the mask) and click the layer icon that looks like a sticky note, second from the right, next to the trash icon. This will give you a simple layer. It should look like single sheet of paper, similar to the icon used for "Background." If you do this, and then the layer turns into "Shape One" as soon as you use the pen tool, your settings are not correct.

bllueart In reply to Popo-Licious [2012-09-08 15:55:49 +0000 UTC]
I did that and at first it's just like you said. But after I start using the pen tool, although the name changes, the layer looks just like the one in the example I gave you earlier so it still won't let me click the stroke path option.
Maybe the problem is deeper into the settings. But thank you! ^^

Popo-Licious In reply to bllueart [2012-09-08 16:10:08 +0000 UTC]
Make sure your settings are exactly like mine in the first screen shot. There are a lot of shape options at the top that look like they'll give you the same results as the pen tool, but they won't. :3 Also, on the little tool bar where you can select airbrush, select, pencil, etc., click on the pen tool icon and hold it down. A little drop down should appear. Make sure "pen tool" is selected and not any of the other versions of the pen.

I can't believe I didn't check that .w. I had "shape layers" selected up there instead of "paths".
I'm really sorry for all the trouble and thank you a lot!

I'm familiar with the pen tool and lining from my own experiments and from looking at stuff like this tutorial you have, but I'm running into a bit of an issue that I think is from my lining and I'm hoping you could correct what I'm doing wrong.
Whenever I color my works, near the line on either side are faded/dead pixels that make my coloring job unclean. :c I've tried two techniques for coloring, one being wand selecting areas and the other simply brushing over the area...wand is most efficient for me, but I always get that fuzzy line. help?
π: 0 β©: 1
Popo-Licious In reply to AnimePeep33 [2012-09-06 01:57:35 +0000 UTC]
I'll see what I can do! First of all, are you coloring on a separate layer? If not, there's your problem right there. If you are on a different layer than the lineart, the wand can also cause that problem, and usually does unless you refine the settings. When you color normally by brushing over the area, do you have this problem? If none of these solve your problem, you might not be using a default brush, or you might simply be viewing the canvas at a weird percentage. Hit ctrl and the plus or minus symbol to get your view to 100%. (Percentage is listed at the very top of the screen.)

AnimePeep33 In reply to Popo-Licious [2012-09-06 03:07:12 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I have everything on their own layers. I'll try adjusting the wand and see if that helps. Usually when I brush over it doesn't look that way, but for big pictures it takes a while to clean up, ya know? and if using the wand to select other areas not needing the particular color, I get that color mixed into other parts of the line art. So it's a real pain.
Thanks for answering my question! ^^

Popo-Licious In reply to AnimePeep33 [2012-09-07 13:39:17 +0000 UTC]
Sounds like it's definitely the wand then. >o< Another way you can color large areas is to actual use the pen tool! XD Use it as I depicted above to trace the inner area of your lineart, connect the last point with the first point so it becomes a shape, and then right click > fill color. That's what I usually do. :3

It works really well for large-scale color fills, and also if you have a really large shadow that needs to follow curvature, clothing lines, etc. I used that technique for all the clothing shadows on this piece: [link]

Ahhh yes, I use the pen tool for shadows and highlights, but for some reason I didn't take the 'leap' and color that way too... >3> I really like how you did your coloring there. I've only been working with PS for about a year, so I've got looots of room to work on getting nice quality like yours.

Popo-Licious In reply to AnimePeep33 [2012-09-07 22:52:10 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! Every shadow or highlight was a gradient in that piece. It gives it a different feel, especially when you layer similar gradients on top of each other like on the skin. >w<
