Description Finally, finally finished! This is by far the most ambitious Predator project I've done. There's stuff that still doesn't *quite* work for me - mostly the fact that the tentacle mass confuses the flow of the picture. That, I fear, is a problem only solved through experience.

This is one of the last request pieces I'm doing. It's experimental and so serves its own purpose, but it uses a couple of Predator characters belonging to my friend ~yen-ta , with his permission.

I assure you that there is a story behind this piece. One of these days I plan to write it out, but in the meantime I'll leave you to wonder...

I used ink and Prismacolor pencils on this. It's 14x17 inches and it took me nigh-on 80 hours to complete.

Thanks very much! I still think I could have composed this crazy thing better - the balance *is* off - but as an exercise in pure Predator craziness, it's a rip-roaring success.

Thank you very much!

Yeah, this was probably one of the most challenging Predator projects I've ever undertaken. I had to do more prepwork to get the composition set up than I would normally have to do - seeing as how there's so many bodies in action. But it was a lot of fun and I'm still pretty pleased with the results even after several months have passed.

I have been influenced by Chinese and Hindu art, as well as lots of comic books, and many other things besides.

Interesting chino-indian motif I, myself, allways imagined them as some Native American tribe. That's the impression i got from the comics i guess...Still, your's seem more...whatchamacallit..."Appropriate".

rachaelm5 In reply to madclownjack [2007-09-10 22:23:22 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty cool, actually. I've seen and read a lot of different ideas about Predator culture. Quite a few Star Trek fans had given the Predators Klingon-esque cultural attributes back before the AvP: Prey novel came out, and it seemed to translate fairly well once we got the scoop from that book. We can also read a lot of different "small community/tribal" attributes into their culture, and I've seen all kinds of different things done in the comics along those lines. I think the AvPvTerminator comic had a more Native American feel to it, especially with some of their ritual observances toward the end.

I grafted the Chino-Indian concept onto the Predator pantheon, specifically, more than onto the living culture. I wanted to start developing a mythology around powerful, respectable deities that had some fairly wild morphology. The tendency of Hindu gods to have multiple arms and heads always struck me as rather alien, even from a human perspective. That, and a project I had some while ago involved Ravana, who has TWENTY bloody arms and ten heads... I had to try something like that again, and so making Predator gods was my excuse. Rather circular logic, yes, but there you go. Now I just have to shoehorn the ideas into some kind of cohesive plot to explain how stuff like this can happen.

Wow. I love the color and the chaos. It looks like a scene from a mythological battle. Very nice. ^-^

rachaelm5 In reply to Predbabe1 [2007-07-31 21:40:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

That mythological, monumental chaos is exactly what I was shooting for. One of those Epic Battle dealies, complete with crazy god and a can opener, and a gob of hard-nosed old warriors kicking butt and taking names.

I mean, honestly, the humans get boring after a while, and you can only kill so many bugs before you tire of cleaning out all those intricate little head knobbies. Gotta find some new and exciting prey. Thought I'd throw the fearsome bunch into a fray with a Cthulhu critter.

I just realised that this thing had soo many eyes everywhere!

The colour does help to separate it out, though fewer tentacles would not have gone amiss but I like how it's purple with yellow blood. Looks like they are all having fun

rachaelm5 In reply to boryfun [2007-07-08 17:24:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

This one does have some compositional problems due to the sheer quantity of tentacles. I'd not tried something this insidiously complex before, so the composition was very much an experiment. I think you're right; some streamlining of tentacles - or something - might need to be done next time I attempt something like this.

Yeah, this one took somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 hours from penciling, to inking, to coloring. I spread it out over several months, though, so I wouldn't go completely crazy.

Thanks very much! It was something of an endurance feat... Over a protracted period of time.

If I put this one out for sale, all matted and framed nicely, it'd go for $300. Sans-frame I might part with it for $250.

Yeah, maybe a bit too much in the way of squidgy action. I'm going to have to work in the tentacle-coordination thing. The movement is so complex, it's hard to keep control of it.

rachaelm5 In reply to Agent-Sarah [2007-06-24 00:34:03 +0000 UTC]

Eighty hours is about average for a large, complex piece like this. And since I spread it out over several months, I didn't really notice the huge amount of time. It may have been a bit more than eighty hours, or perhaps a bit less, but eighty is a pretty close estimate.

It's a bit too tangled to work really well, I think. I need to work on tentacle-coordination-and-balancing mechanisms of some kind if I do anything this horribly complicated again any time soon.

Very nice! But a bit confusing... Hey! That red predator's got wings and like... lots of arms? Why is that? Maybe not outlining what's supposed to be in the background would make it less confusing? Like you've done in some places. I don't know! Anyway, it's great!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rachaelm5 In reply to YikYik [2007-06-24 00:37:24 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Yes, all the tentacles made this project very complicated. I know that I need to work on the coordination of so many tentacles a bit better next time I try this.

The red Predator is a demon/demi-god. He's *special*...
