FULL VIDEO TUTORIAL(7:34 long)
This tutorial is meant for those with limited access to markers or can't afford too many (these puppies are expensive!). Each skin tone only uses three different markers, and there is a little overlap between colors.
I walk through the basics, cover lots of tips/advice, and offer 9 different skin tones. Should be very helpful for beginners If you use this tutorial, feel free to show me what you've made!
If you found this, or any other tutorial, helpful, please spread the word and share them with your friends x3 That really helps me out and I'd super appreciate it!
If you want to see a few extra colors , the full scanned chart , as well as the lineart of this dude, it's already available for my patrons over on my Patreon page: www.patreon.com/sambeawesome?t…

Thanks for lookin'!

Do you have a recommended set for skin tones? I have a big box of copics, but they only really came with one color that's good for lighter skins so i was looking to get more flesh tones.

Copic has their own skin tone set (here ) though it'll probably be cheaper to buy them individually online. (my go to shop ) Don't feel limited to earth tones though. There are some good YRs, Rs, and Vs that mesh well with other markers to produce a large variety of skin tones.

That's a really nicely made tutorial. I'm struggling to learn how to use Copic markers myself and this is pretty useful. I like it how you actually used less markers than it seems (the darker the skin got, you just used the darkest one from the previous skin tone). Do you have any tip for the brown/darkest skin tone 'shine' (the 8th skin tone)? Cause every time I use this darkest brown for shadows, there's a glossy film on a paper that shines a little and makes the shadow be... em... not shadowy? I'm not sure if it's my marker itself or I use too many layers, but I notice on your tutorial, that you have the same issue (or is it just me that I see it as an issue?).
Also, you have a nice voice!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it and were able to get something out of it
I'm not sure what you mean by the shine, unless you mean when it's wet? There might be some glare from the wet alcohol and the light showing up as I color it in on my camera, but it dries completely matte. Just to double check, I went ahead and looked at some of my artworks where I used quite a few layers, and there is no gloss to them. If it's happening to you, my guess is that it's the paper. Perhaps try with different papers? Blob on lots of dark layers and see what happens? I've used Strathmore and normal computer paper, and I've never had this problem, regardless of the number of layers. (Or perhaps you're not waiting long enough for it to fully dry?) Sorry you're having trouble though! I hope you can figure it out
And thanks xD Used to be self-conscious of it when I first started recording, but now I'm used to it, haha.

I'm using a sketchbook paper (I get best blending results on it). But thanks for the tip! I'll try it out!

Good to know for later on. I've been thinking of trying markers out, just not sure when since yes, copics are pricey.

Happy to help The tips should work for most any alcoholic markers. The color codes obviously won't be the same though xD But yes, Copics are pricey :c

Good to know. If I can't get any copics, which is probably likely with the price tag they tend to have, at least it'll help with using other types that more in my price range. ^_^

It really sucks that they're so pricey. Ciaos aren't too bad, plus you get the refillable aspect which most other markers don't have. I hear of new ones all the time on the market though, so definitely plenty of choices to go around

I'll have to look into those then the next time I shop around for supplies. I know there are a ton of choices, but there also some out there that just don't work as well as they should considering how much they cost, so I'm always kind of looking around for stuff.

Check out as many reviews as you can. I'd try to aim for refillable ones, but that's just me xD I'm surprised at how many /don't/ offer refills. It's putting the ink into a bottle instead of a marker. Then they'd be a /real/ competitor to Copics :/

Those do seem to have one heck of an advantage, since it seems like it'd be easier to just get the refils. Though of course, you also have to be sure that what refils are offered are good ones that don't run out so quickly you're buying them in bulk over and over again lol! So many factors! It should be easy, but it never is, is it?

sambeawesome In reply to ScribbledInCrayon [2016-06-21 21:34:49 +0000 UTC]
Right? Seems like an obvious thing to produce if you're going to compete with them @_@ I talked with Winsor and Newton, as their brush markers were REALLY tempting, but they said they absolutely will not be producing refills. WHY NOT?! Winsor and Newton have some great products, it's such a shame :/
Least with Copics, you get a good few refills, around 5-7 from what I've heard, with each bottle. (For the same prices as one marker, it's a steal.) Personally, I have some refills, and from the way things are going, I'd easily pass 7 refills LOL. I seem to barely use any ink at all when I pour it in. I'm guessing they meant completely empty markers, not just topping it off, haha.
Ciaos seem like the best deal from what I've seen, if you include refills, but with so many new markers out there, I'm rather behind. I'd kill for a good competitor. Copic needs to bring their prices back down a few bucks. They used to be 4-5$ a marker (in stores, online it was 2-3$), and that was just a few years ago. The inflation is insane. From what I heard, it was due to resale companies charging so little so they upped it. :/

Hmmm, looked em up and definitely still not in my price range. But then again until I get practice going with it I don't think spending a ton off the bat is a good idea anyway. What about the ones from Prismacolor? I love their colored pencils, but never tried the markers.

sambeawesome In reply to ScribbledInCrayon [2016-06-21 22:47:49 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I typically only buy online during sales. With Copics, sales typically only happen two or three times a year, and it's usually around Black Friday/Christmas time. I've never used other alcoholic markers, but I've heard good things about Prismacolor. The downside is no refills though, haha x'D Though the price is pretty close to Ciao anyway.
Spectrum Noir is one I saw in my nearby art store recently. The packaging looked cheap but the markers looked nice. I didn't buy any, but they're much cheaper than Copics, and a quick Google search says they're refillable I'd be tempted to buy some to compare if I wasn't so damn broke >3<
Edit: Have you seen this video? www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXFkRD… Might help you out

lol Just watched it. So basically if I want something thats a little cheaper and worth the money, either Ciao or Prismacolor (just cant refill the Prisma's and I don't get a brush nib.) xD Goodness.
Might be easier to go to a store or something when I get the chance as opposed to looking online to be honest. Seems like sale wise, which I did get my colored pencils around like Christmas because they were on sale then too, online that's what I'll end up waiting for where as in retail stores they can't just jack up the cost like a seller on Amazon can.
Thanks for the help! I'll keep looking into it more, as I know there's a few places I can try and look for both, do a little comparisson, and I can keep my eyes open online for sales and the like too.

Would love to make an alternatives video myself. Our conversation inspired me to look into it. Too expensive of a project for me to do right now, but I'm definitely adding it to my "to-do" for the future
Bring all the coupons, haha. If you're new to alcoholoic markers, it might not matter all too much which you get. Starting cheap just to familiarize yourself with them isn't that bad. I also found out that Spectrum has a "Aqua" version that has a brush/chisel nib combo which is insane, I can't think of any other marker that has that by default. It looked like it only came in sets though, which isn't entirely a bad thing. The price wasn't too awful either, especially if you can find sales.

That would be awesome, maybe as like ones to get for beginners that have some of the features of like Copics just at a more cost effective price if you aren't sure thats what you want to keep working on. Copics seems to be one heck of an investment so yeah.
lol! No joke. My husband was like - "Well, get what you need." Then I sent him a link, and he's all - "Or not." Haha! I'm like yeah, I think online for right now it's not gonna go so hott trying to find them. But keeping an eye out for sales is something I'm good at. Just got more colored pencils not too long ago, always manage to spot those when there's a sale. I suppose that is one big plus for Prismacolor - Sales are more frequent. So if I do go that route to begin with, there's that at least. I'll have to look into those Spectrum ones then, see what they got. ^_^

Would be interesting to see how other alcoholoic markers work Can't get myself too excited about it though, it'll be a LONG time for sure before I'd be able to afford doing it xD
HAHA that's art supplies for ya'! My personal go-to for markers is Carpe Diem if you wanna give them a glance. I've heard good things about DickBlick as well though I've never purchased from them. Good luck!

It would indeed! Hopefully it won't take too long, it sounds like something fun and interesting to see. Plus it'd be helpful for anyone looking to find out answers too.
I'll add those to the small list I've got of ones to look into. I just got a big order of more colored pencils so for now I'm sticking to what I know until I figure out the marker situation. Thanks!
