Description Update: Thanks everyone for the DD. I've uploaded a higher contrast image, so you may see the text better. : )

Dedicated to my the watchers, who seem to enjoy my pencil work.

-----
This tutorial covers the materials, process, and mistakes of the penciling process, and there is even a short step by step demonstration showing how I do my pencil drawings. Although the example is anime, this can really be used for all styles and the methods and steps taken carry outside of the genre. I worked quite hard on this, so I hope you all enjoy it. This tutorial IS reading intense, but it's worth it--I promise.

Feel free to ask me a question by sending me a note. And, please do tell me if this tutorial helps you any as it encourages me to make more and it simply makes me happy.

How do I prevent smudging after I am done drawing?
All you have to do is go down your local arts and crafts store and purchase some fixative. It's like a spray that you can use on your drawings to prevent smudging. Make sure you step back away from your drawing when you spray and if you are sensative to sprays or odors, use it outside. Also, you make sure you purchase a 'workable' fixative' so that you can still come back and edit easily. You can also use hair spray as a cheap substitute^^ Don't grab the adhesive spray by mistake!! They are usually placed right next to each other in similar cans.

I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

I made it! I killed my back, though. Great.
Haha, those weird box pattern kills my eyes, too. I really hate those.
Thank you for the tutorial, this actually looks like a way more advanced version of my penciling (penciling is a word?)

one thing that i thing is sooo freakin annoying about shading wit pencil is that it can smudge (mostly wit ppl dat have sweaty hands) then it can ruin the picture.

love that u took the time to make such a helpful tutorial, i will use this to my advantage!

This tutorial is really great, thank you very much for that! Some of it I already knew, but there were also a lot of really interesting things I had never known or thought about, such as using your arm instead of your wrist, and not putting too dark/light values next to each others for soft items like cloth. I would love to see you do a tutorial on different kinds of texture. <3

Wow. I used to draw a lot, a long time ago, stopped for a variety of reasons. I've been wanting to start again lately, and your tutorial gave me a good head start. Very well written, I can almost feel the experience speaking for itself. Lots of little tidbits I didn't know about. Lots of needed reminders, too. Text could be larger for screen reading at higher resolution, but I'm just nitpicking at this point. Very well done, overall. Thanks for the tips!

First off, thanks very much for showing me your work. It's always nice to see when people use my tutorial Thanks for remembering me

The shows some real skill, hun. I love how beautiful and sharp the edges are and how wonderfully the shades blend together, and you were able to retain a lot of details with the highlights on the beads, so I can tell you were really patient and careful about your shading. Really wonderful stuff! Thanks so much for linking to this.

So helpful <3 I've recently decided to start exploring traditional media, so this will really help me out. I'm really eager to start improving with pencil and quit being so rusty. Drawing with a tablet too long, maybe. x3

Wow that must have been a lotta work Nicely done by you I'm sure i'll look at this frome time to time, since i recently started drawing myself. There's just one question im missing: ''Does it matter how you're holding the pencil?''

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sashas In reply to Brokkolispinat [2010-02-24 23:38:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it does matter how you hold your pencil. Certain ways of holding a pencil increase accuracy or are more appropriate for sketching. Check this link out for more information : ) [link] You'll need to click next to go through all six pages/positions : )

Wow this is a really great tutorial! Very informational. Haha, I used to tell myself I couldn't draw, but then I actually started practicing by drawing anime eyes (which were quite bad when I first started), but then I started drawing in my algebra 2 class (not a very important class anyway ) and now they're quite good, if i do say so myself! lol

Awesome work! I totally respect the time and effort you put into this! Very detailed and succinct. I'm glad I stopped by today.

Do you ever have a problem with your drawing getting too shiny with graphite buildup? Know any way to fix that?

Tips:
Easy way to prevent smudging: don't touch the paper. I sometimes use my other arm as a bridge to hold my drawing hand up off the paper.

Sweat while drawing? Oily skin? If you have to rest your hand on the paper, use a napkin under your hand to keep from sticking to the paper.

You likey small details? Ultra-smooth blending? Use a magnifying glass. Great for super-fine hair and filling in little gaps in shading on paper with tooth. Remember to step back from drawing and not get lost in Lilliput land.
