Description Update: Thanks everyone for the DD. I've uploaded a higher contrast image, so you may see the text better. : )

Dedicated to my the watchers, who seem to enjoy my pencil work.

-----
This tutorial covers the materials, process, and mistakes of the penciling process, and there is even a short step by step demonstration showing how I do my pencil drawings. Although the example is anime, this can really be used for all styles and the methods and steps taken carry outside of the genre. I worked quite hard on this, so I hope you all enjoy it. This tutorial IS reading intense, but it's worth it--I promise.

Feel free to ask me a question by sending me a note. And, please do tell me if this tutorial helps you any as it encourages me to make more and it simply makes me happy.

How do I prevent smudging after I am done drawing?
All you have to do is go down your local arts and crafts store and purchase some fixative. It's like a spray that you can use on your drawings to prevent smudging. Make sure you step back away from your drawing when you spray and if you are sensative to sprays or odors, use it outside. Also, you make sure you purchase a 'workable' fixative' so that you can still come back and edit easily. You can also use hair spray as a cheap substitute^^ Don't grab the adhesive spray by mistake!! They are usually placed right next to each other in similar cans.

I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

This is awesome,I learned a lot. I'll definitely practice drawing with my arm instead of wrist, cause indeed It's hard to draw long lines with one's wrist,I keep drawing more lines on top of the first one to make the line go where I want,it should be something many beginners do right?

Very informative and useful! I always smudge my drawings and it was nice to learn about that fixative stuff. Some of it was review for me but it felt more like a refresher then just going over many of the things I already knew. Good job! <3

This really is top quality information and I applaud you for your preservation in writing this. (Art can be a major writing essay no? xDDD)

You seem to like the method that I also use as well for shading. Hm.... maybe I should join the group....

Ahaha, 'Your paper and drawing pencils are not holy.' That's totally my problem. I feel as if the paper I'm drawing on is the last piece of paper on the planet. -___- Might you have any idea how I could get over that?

Hey there I'm already confident in my pencilling skills, but I've been going through tutorials anyway to see if I can pick up anything new and to see how other people do it. I have to say go you for making this tutorial, it took me a while to read it so it must have taken you aaages to write it and to edit the pictures into it, it's lovely you take the time and put in the effort in order to inform and help people with things like this so you're awesome.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I absolutely love this tutorial. I think this is the first tutorial I have commented on, and I also have rarely been giving comments (I know, I should more often...), but this was so awesome and HUGELY inspirational that I just had to. Generally from most tutorials I do feel a bit of inspiration, but from this one, its like WOW. I have never wanted to pick up a pencil so much before. I appreciate that you spent your time giving detail in a clear and sense-making fashion. Thanks so much!!! ^^

I read the part for beginners, but everytime I try, it never looks as great as others. I don't even think my mom likes my drawings. She says she does, but she doesn't really mean it, I can tell. Everyone else can make their drawings look really good, but I can't and everytime I try, it always messes up. I'm really out of options now and I do want to continue drawing, but I really suck at everything.

Wow. Amazing tutorial! This is really detailed. Your tutorial is a great contribution to our community! Thank you so much~ Really, really helpful for a beginner like me.

Two quick questions;
You said that 9B is the softest pencil, right? I just recently bought a pencil set from B to 6B and found out that 6B has the darkest shade of black. B, on the other hand works perfectly for my light sketches. Am I wrong or the pencils I bought were bogus?

Last one, in the part of the stuff you dislike, I tend to do that in large areas, lol. And I don't like it either. It makes my drawing.. messy. I'm really glad you have given a solution to it but I don't understand how to do it. 'Layer your pencil markings..'
How do you do that?

So sorry for this super long comment! I promise I won't bother you anymore after this. Thank you!

ninezen In reply to caranette [2009-08-13 13:52:42 +0000 UTC]

Hi ... I'm not sashas, but did you figure out what was up with your pencils? The softer the pencil is, the darker the mark is. Hard pencils are lighter.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

caranette In reply to ninezen [2009-08-14 15:58:41 +0000 UTC]

So.. if the pencil is for example 6B; the shade should be lighter then? Hmm. Thanks for your reply though, I really appreciate it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ninezen In reply to caranette [2009-08-15 01:12:20 +0000 UTC]

OK, 9B is the darkest, and 9H is the lightest. 6B would be fairly dark, because it is soft. B for example is harder, and therefore less stuff ends up on the paper when you use it, so it leaves a lighter mark. I hope this helps?

I guess I got confused in the soft and hard part. I thought it was the mark left in the paper. Thank you again!
