Description
Update: Thanks everyone for the DD. I've uploaded a higher contrast image, so you may see the text better. : )Dedicated to my the watchers, who seem to enjoy my pencil work.

This tutorial covers the materials, process, and mistakes of the penciling process, and there is even a short step by step demonstration showing how I do my pencil drawings. Although the example is anime, this can really be used for all styles and the methods and steps taken carry outside of the genre. I worked quite hard on this, so I hope you all enjoy it. This tutorial IS reading intense, but it's worth it--I promise.
Feel free to ask me a question by sending me a note. And, please do tell me if this tutorial helps you any as it encourages me to make more and it simply makes me happy.

How do I prevent smudging after I am done drawing?
All you have to do is go down your local arts and crafts store and purchase some fixative. It's like a spray that you can use on your drawings to prevent smudging. Make sure you step back away from your drawing when you spray and if you are sensative to sprays or odors, use it outside. Also, you make sure you purchase a 'workable' fixative' so that you can still come back and edit easily. You can also use hair spray as a cheap substitute^^ Don't grab the adhesive spray by mistake!! They are usually placed right next to each other in similar cans.
I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

Great tutorial. Way back when I was just starting to draw I worked in a value intense fashion. Then I got stuck in line art and have been battling my way back to creating fine pencil work like yours. Very nice stuff. You have inspired me to go back to shading....Thanks!

Wow, great tutorial! I was researching various types of tutorials (colouring, posing, etc.) when I came across this. I've been meaning to try pencil shading for quite some time, and this just inspired me. I sat down and worked on my first official pencilling for about three hours, and I think it turned out better than it would have without this tutorial! Thanks ^^

This is really cool. I always love reading about how other artists use pencils. If you don't mind, I have a few questions. >_<;;
When you outline the picture (before shading), do you outline it really lightly? or erase some of the outlines when you shade it in? I found it really difficult to outline, so usually I skip the step, and erase the sketch completely, and shade from the leftover marks from the previous sketch (which always end up not very productive, more like starting the drawing from scratch, cause it is hard to trace the previously drawn lines) If you have some tips it would be really awesome.
And this is just out of curiosity, what size paper do you usually use for your standard drawings?

sashas In reply to Fishdot [2008-01-09 17:40:06 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I outline lightly. I almost never make really dark marks right off the bat. I've known many people who do as you do and erase so that drawing is light. Since I typically erase my lines as I go.. and draw a prettier/cleaner line on top, my outlines are generally where I want them to be. Redrawing all of the lines at the end seems harder to me, because everything is light and as you draw, things get smudged... and it's hard to tell just where you intended that line to be.
My drawings are typically 8.5 x 11 or 9x12. 8.5x11 for sketches because that is the size of my sketch book, and 9x12 for general drawings. Also, I am partial to Bristol smooth paper for finished drawings. I typically state which size/type of paper I used if the size is different.

ohh thanks for replying. I usually draw on really small pieces of paper.. and have trouble fitting in the details, so they end up looking kinda funny. I guess it is the same idea as scanning a picture under low resolution.

Awesummm.

Any particular way you go about *not*smudging the paper as you draw?
I always get pencil-thumb prints everywhere, and the side of my hand that faces the paper always drags the graphite around everywhere. o.o I can't use tissues or anything under my hand because that smudges too.... hmm.. ~ponder~ >3<;;
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sashas In reply to RainbowLilac [2007-12-12 03:38:09 +0000 UTC]
Ah, well, I don't have too much of a problem with thumb prints, cuz I smudge the graphite myself... there isn't too far for it to go after it's already been smudged. You can always put a regular piece of paper beneath your drawing hand to avoid smudging. tissue and other 'soft' papers smudge A LOT more than harder, stiffer paper. I know some folks wear rubber gloves, I just generally avoid sitting my hand anywhere where the graphite is heavy. Also, you can 'fix' your drawing with workable fixative to prevent the graphite from going to far. This does change the texture of the drawing however : (
I hope this helps in some way. ^^
