Description Update: Thanks everyone for the DD. I've uploaded a higher contrast image, so you may see the text better. : )

Dedicated to my the watchers, who seem to enjoy my pencil work.

-----
This tutorial covers the materials, process, and mistakes of the penciling process, and there is even a short step by step demonstration showing how I do my pencil drawings. Although the example is anime, this can really be used for all styles and the methods and steps taken carry outside of the genre. I worked quite hard on this, so I hope you all enjoy it. This tutorial IS reading intense, but it's worth it--I promise.

Feel free to ask me a question by sending me a note. And, please do tell me if this tutorial helps you any as it encourages me to make more and it simply makes me happy.

How do I prevent smudging after I am done drawing?
All you have to do is go down your local arts and crafts store and purchase some fixative. It's like a spray that you can use on your drawings to prevent smudging. Make sure you step back away from your drawing when you spray and if you are sensative to sprays or odors, use it outside. Also, you make sure you purchase a 'workable' fixative' so that you can still come back and edit easily. You can also use hair spray as a cheap substitute^^ Don't grab the adhesive spray by mistake!! They are usually placed right next to each other in similar cans.

I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

It's really good, thanks for sharing ur knowledge.
by the way, what kind of pencil do you generally use? i mean 2b or 3b etc?
or do you keep changing in the process of drawing a picture?

sashas In reply to dreamerinREALITY [2007-10-08 11:47:22 +0000 UTC]

I just used one type of pencil for the step by step part, and in general, I use one type of pencil. .5mm mechanical pencil... which is about HB grade. I typically do smaller detailed work so I simply prefer to build up darker shades than deal with messier pencils. I switch grades as I go if I'm working on larger/quicker projects, since blacker grades of graphite are faster.

dreamerinREALITY In reply to sashas [2007-10-09 07:03:24 +0000 UTC]

thanks alot, it helped.
but i find HB grades hard to erase away and it leaves a imprint on the paper.
but nevermind that.

OH MY GOSH!!! This was sooo helpful. I'm a beginner at drawing and I'm taking Drawing for my high school art credits. Anyways, I've got an awful time with shading and this helped me out. My teacher is pretty great, but for me... sometimes I need to hear it from another view. So thanks soooo much. I really hope you write more tutorials on pencil drawings. Oooh! Maybe you could do one that works specifically with shading and highlighting your drawing. Ugh! I just can't do it right. My line work will turn out great, but then my shading just messes it all up and makes it not as realistic as I would like my art to look. Well thanks a whole lot. I really appreciate this. Man... this was a really long comment. Almost a whole LETTER! Geez. Sorry about that. Hahahahah!

Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make such a helpful, detailed tutorials for newbies!

I've learned quite a lot. I've always wondered how to make longer smooth lines, and the secret is in the arm. Thanks for the tip! I must admit, I'm quite guilty of blending to hide sloppy shading work and the stripey-patterned shading when filling out large areas. How do I shade in order not to do that?

And is it okay to practice shading with regular. pencils? ^^ I'm unfamiliar with creating values via the squiggling and crosshatching.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sashas In reply to gothicpsyche [2007-09-15 21:59:28 +0000 UTC]

Regular pencils are fine to work with, they are actually somewhere HB anyhoo~ so they are fine to work with, I use mechanical pencils myself. Just draw in one direction and then another over the same area; The stripey pattern is due mainly to going too much in the same direction.

My happy you enjoyed my tutorial : )

I love how near the end you put
"Drawing is just the process of making marks on paper. If you can make a mark on paper or on any surface, you can draw, all you need to do now is refine your marks."
Because it's sooo true. x3

WooHoo! I got to the bottom!
I thought I'd NEVER finish

It's a really detailed tutorial, I really learned alot about the materials, you made this tutorial so well, you got the creative juices out of everyone who read this
1.I have a few questions for the expert
If I wanted to shade in a large area, but still keep it light at the same time, are there any methods I could use?
2. If there were two light sources, focusing on the object,(e.: left/right) do I just draw a shadow for the object, or are there more things I needed to do?
AND
3. Many tutorials I've seen for "figure drawing"
have said to draw stick persons, and then draw skin for 'em, I find it hard to erase the excess lines after I've drawn the details, any suggestions?

Thanks for sharing this wonderful tutorial

sashas In reply to xhappysoapx [2007-08-15 19:40:25 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like the tutorial. : )

1. Hm, If I wanted to cover an area lightly I'd probably shade it over the whole area lightly, and then take a tissue or some other paper and rub the area to get a consistent tone. The surface will be very smooth. : ) Or you could just very lightly. You may want to hold your pencil like this --> [link] Your strokes will be much lighter ^^

2.Well, lighting with two light sources is different than doing one light source. There will be two shadows cast, and the core shadow will be in the center--looking rather triangle like if you are lighting from both sides. Usually, photographically speaking, you don't want to light from both sides equally because the center of your object ends up being very dark.. hmm, I don't think I explained that right ;__;

3. Well, you must draw lightly. And good erasers are always good. I use Pink Pearl... also stronger paper will help so won't have to make it easier to erase. Also, after you've drawn in the definite lines... erase the whole area, very lightly your lines should be faint enough that you can't see them too well against the paper. Then, trace over the lines you are sure you want to be there : )

Brilliant tutorial, thankyou! This really helped me a lot and it's great to keep referring back to. Hence it's being placed in my favourites. :]

By the way, would you say that blending really makes a difference to a drawing, and do you always use the technique? Because I'm in two minds about adding blending to a drawing just in case it turns out terribly, and no amount of practice can help me overcome this fear...

I think this tutorial would be better to read if the font was bigger and you didn't use a white font against a light gray screen. I tried reading the first few paragraphs, but eyes are starting to hurt. I wish I can actually read it though.

HOMG!!! I'm done!! That was long....I read the lineart tutorial first and I already thought that was long, but I did learn a lot so thanks. Question. In the tips at the bottom, you said layer your pencil marks...or something like that...what does that mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sashas In reply to Silver-Strife-Angel [2007-07-22 21:34:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Heheheh, if you think this is long... you should see the perspective tutorial I'm working on XD it's gonna be so much longer ^^

Ah, layering your pencil marks means that you should put one pencil mark on top another like layers to get darker values rather than just making one mark and sticking with it.
