Description Update: Thanks everyone for the DD. I've uploaded a higher contrast image, so you may see the text better. : )

Dedicated to my the watchers, who seem to enjoy my pencil work.

-----
This tutorial covers the materials, process, and mistakes of the penciling process, and there is even a short step by step demonstration showing how I do my pencil drawings. Although the example is anime, this can really be used for all styles and the methods and steps taken carry outside of the genre. I worked quite hard on this, so I hope you all enjoy it. This tutorial IS reading intense, but it's worth it--I promise.

Feel free to ask me a question by sending me a note. And, please do tell me if this tutorial helps you any as it encourages me to make more and it simply makes me happy.

-----
How do I prevent smudging after I am done drawing?
All you have to do is go down your local arts and crafts store and purchase some fixative. It's like a spray that you can use on your drawings to prevent smudging. Make sure you step back away from your drawing when you spray and if you are sensative to sprays or odors, use it outside. Also, you make sure you purchase a 'workable' fixative' so that you can still come back and edit easily. You can also use hair spray as a cheap substitute^^ Don't grab the adhesive spray by mistake!! They are usually placed right next to each other in similar cans.

I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

this is very helpful! Thank you for posting a tutorial like this up. It's been very helpful for me. But, I coulda swore there was a link to a tutorial or something like that that led to a paper technique. You roll up a piece of paper and give it a pointy edge or something a around that. The paper was supposed to be used like a pencil to shade, but I can't remember where I found it =\ I thought it was on your page somewhere, but I guess I was wrong. Anyways, nice tutorial, and really hope to seem more soon.

I almost forgot that I had faved this tutorial before. I'm trying to practice my pencil work and was at a lost, I consider myself a beginner, but then POOF, this shows up. A life saver honestly I'll have more free time to practice my art in the summer and this was really helpful - thanks!

I like the detail of your tutorial. The beginner like me can understand at all. But, can you tell me how to hold a pencil when blend/shading? XD

Hey mate!~Hopefully u can answer my doubts on 'lineart'!

Was tryin outlining on my own art work..Initally it worked magic but i was confused bout something..

Darker lines for objects closer.
Darker lines for objects in shade.
Is there a difference between the two?Coz my work is turning dark all over..=X

do add me up if u have the time!mortal_wl@hotmail.com.
Thanks

sashas In reply to LoyaLover [2007-04-05 01:58:04 +0000 UTC]

Hm, well, if you feel your linework is getting dark, try thinking in reverse. Think instead that things farther away and in direct light are lighter.

The difference between the two:
-Outlining the closer objects more thickly makes objects closer to you feel closer than things thinly outlined.
-Outlining objects in shadow more thickly makes the object seem more three dimensional.

I add you to my msn. Mine is: seventh_prodigy@hotmail.com

I was reading through your tutorial again and I had a few questions... if you have time to answer them ^_^ I'd really appreciate it.

1. You outline with your 7mm pencil too? Or do you ink the picture?

2. Also, what type of ....non-mechanical pencil should one use when they are sketching? I use 2B normally... but I don't really know. -_-

3. How do you stop your stuff from smudddging ;_; I've got mine in a sketchbook and it gets all messy... *makes sad face*

Thank yooooou! *dances* *hands out a cookie*

sashas In reply to Tamaska [2007-01-31 23:47:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sure, I'd love to answer you questions.

1. You outline with your 7mm pencil too? Or do you ink the picture?
Yes, I only use my 7mm pencil for the outlining. I don't use any ink. ^^

2. Also what type of ....non-mechanical pencil should one use when they are sketching?
2B is a good grade to start in. In my art classes, my art teachers always recommend 2B. The hardest most artist sketch with is HB. I've been known to sketch things out in 2H though that more of an extreme, I think, as I am constantly erasing and starting my drawings over and over and need to erase a lot til I feel good about the first few lines T///T It's all about the individual. If your able to erase mistakes fine with 2B stick with it, but if those sketch marks are coming back to haunt you... try something a bit harder ^^

... *cough* so in short, 2B is fine ^^

3. How do you stop your stuff from smudging?
People ask me this a lot XD. Well, as I mentioned earlier, I use harder pencils, which do not smear as much as softer/blacker pencils. The problem with harder pencils however is that it takes FOREVER to build up any value -__-

Also, I always rest my hand on the lightest side of the area I'm drawing/shading(since I try to draw left to right, it's typically the right side). If I accidentally smear a very light gray against the white paper, probably no will notice. If I smear a black area against a white background... then everyone's going to see it. Hmm, I don't do this, but I've seen some artist place a piece of paper beneath their hand as they draw to prevent smearing.

Hope that helps
