Description
Update: Thanks everyone for the DD. I've uploaded a higher contrast image, so you may see the text better. : )Dedicated to my the watchers, who seem to enjoy my pencil work.
-----
This tutorial covers the materials, process, and mistakes of the penciling process, and there is even a short step by step demonstration showing how I do my pencil drawings. Although the example is anime, this can really be used for all styles and the methods and steps taken carry outside of the genre. I worked quite hard on this, so I hope you all enjoy it. This tutorial IS reading intense, but it's worth it--I promise.
Feel free to ask me a question by sending me a note. And, please do tell me if this tutorial helps you any as it encourages me to make more and it simply makes me happy.

How do I prevent smudging after I am done drawing?
All you have to do is go down your local arts and crafts store and purchase some fixative. It's like a spray that you can use on your drawings to prevent smudging. Make sure you step back away from your drawing when you spray and if you are sensative to sprays or odors, use it outside. Also, you make sure you purchase a 'workable' fixative' so that you can still come back and edit easily. You can also use hair spray as a cheap substitute^^ Don't grab the adhesive spray by mistake!! They are usually placed right next to each other in similar cans.
I make my tutorials for free, but if you enjoy my tutorials and want to donate some funds for gas, art books and such, I would appreciate it. [link]

That's amaing; not the tutorial (it is, don't get me wrong), but that you manged to write a tutorial that I've read in its entirety - no giant leaps that many tutorials make that only make more questions, and your obvious skill definitely helped my focus.
Instant fav, now I'm going onto your other tuts

Well, thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial. A bit amazed that you read through the entire tutorial without getting too bored
I'm glad that there aren't a lot of gaps, I have the thinking that everything is interrelated so I end up throwing a lot of things in, which are usually lost when you are just doing a step by step demonstration.
Thanks again.

I absolutely loved this tutorial. I've seen other tutorials that aren't really teaching you anything; They just show you how to do stuff. I am guilty of the stripey shading, so I really gotta work on that. I tried to eliminate that in my recent pencil drawing. I've also heard of using q-tips for blenders, but never really tried it. It work really well, though. I may need to start experimenting. Anyways, I totally appreciate all the work you put into this, and you have it organized so nicely! It makes a lot of sense, and flows well, so a job well done! !

What resolution are you viewing the tutorial in? just asking because no one mentioned the readability before... I'll consider that when making other tutorials later. Thanks very much.

I was looking at in in full veiw mode, it's mainly the colors(of the background and text) that make it hard to read. Not sure of the exact resolution, though.

I kinda just stole the colors from the old DA color scheme so that it would be readable... hmm.. I think go back later and alter the colors to match the new layout... I think against the white background it looks lighter. Thanks again for telling me.

I was searching for random tutorials and I ended up here.
I can say I found your tutorial USEFUL and very DETAILED. The effort you placed here is just... wow. Now I've learned a lot of stuff! THANKS! (btw, I read the whole of it! )
Just a question, in the part where you said you dislike the stripe-like pattern when shading large areas.... I tend todo that too ... uh, so how do you make it all smooth and non-stripey?
PS It's so helpful, I'll fave it.

sashas In reply to MistyGlow [2006-11-04 21:38:32 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you found it helpful ^^.
Uhm, you can get rid of the strip pattern by going over the shaded region again in a different direction or just by going over the lighter areas again Hope that helps.

I don't know how I passed up your tutorial. -____-;; Sashas, you really are amazing! I'm entering Advanced Art this year, and I never really got that hang of shading with pencils (which will probably be important in class). The lines were so definate in all my pictures, and never really turned out smooth. Hopefully if I keep practicing I can make my pictures look a heck of a lot smoother. Very helpful tips you had in this tut, I'll have to remember them the next time I do a pencil drawing.
And by the way, the Q-tips work REALLY, REALLY well. I never even thought about using that as a blender! I never really have any luck using the paper blenders we had at school, but the Q-tips work so nice! ^____^ I love you for this tutorial!!! Thanks a lot!

Heheh, well, I'm glad you found it informative ^^, I'm going to be doing a follow-up of this... sometime... hopefully ^__^; That will more into making your drawings appear more 3-D and how I know where to put shadows, ect.
Yeah, the q-tips work really well, and they sell tons of them in a pack ^^ which is nice.
I hope you enjoy and do well in your Advanced Art class
