Description
DescriptionI never feel right making tutorials because, I don't consider myself a very advanced user of Photoshop. I never feel like I'm in the right place telling other people how to do it.And I know this isn't an advanced tutorial, but many people don't know how to do this. I also know there are other tutorials out there explaining this exact same thing. . .
I was asked recently how to get the white off sketch images and it reminded me of how often I really am asked that. So have a tutorial for everyone in the future who needs to know.

Thanks! That's really useful, because I myself prefer to do lineart traditionally, have no tablet and am not very familiar with PhotoShop. Appreciate that you've taken the time to go through these really basic but important instructions! Well deserved DD, congratulations!

This is what I have been looking for FOR AGES!! I almost rarely ever find really good tutorials for PS7, and tutorials for pulling lineart from an original image without having to completely redo it digitally [[NOT easy for someone who only has a laptop touchpad!]]. This is the BEST tutorial I have seen in years <3 Thank you for sharing and congrats on the DD!!

A quicker method would be to use the Background Eraser.

I did mention in the tutorial that there are a billion ways of doing this; this is just one of them. If you know of a quicker and easier method, I'm really glad for you; why don't you make a tutorial instead of commenting on mine?

I have no need to make a tutorial based on something that can be summed up in one post. If you're aware of various methods, I'm really glad for you; why don't you accept the fact that not everybody viewing your tutorial is aware of such methods and may find my comment helpful rather than acting like an angry, butthurt twat over a simple, non-malicious statement?

xD I know they might not be aware. But wouldn't that be why you make a tutorial? Regardless if it's one statement or not?

Oh, I see. So is the background eraser its own tool? where is it located? I haven't heard of it until you mentioned it.

You right click on the Eraser tool, select "Background Eraser", and adjust some of the settings (I don't have Photoshop on this laptop so I can't check, but it's something like Size: 2500, Limits: Discontiguous, set the dropper icon to the one that shows the two main color swatches, and set the tolerance to 100%? I'll check later when I get home in case this is wrong).
Once you've set the Background Eraser up correctly it's just a one-click process after desaturating an image.

When you turned the lines orange, you're not using a group, you're using a clipping mask. Grouping them won't do anything like that.

Shinerai In reply to Vesperius [2010-10-12 10:32:59 +0000 UTC]
Sorry. Until very recently, I did all my work in Photoshop Elements 2.0. In Photoshop Elements 2.0, you achieve what regular Photoshop calls a "clipping mask" my going to "Layer > Group With Previous" since PSE2 doesn't have clipping masks. Accordingly, the shortcut for this action is ctrl+g which I always mentally associated with the G from "group", so I got used to calling it grouping. This is also why I still use the shortcut in regular photoshop; it took me a long time to find that the option hadn't disappeared from the Layer menu, but it had just been renamed to "Create Clipping Mask".
Anyway, thanks for your concern, but no one else seems to be having a problem figuring it out, so I don't feel I need to fix my misuse of the terms.
It's a shame such a cool/talented artist only left a rather pointed comment. Thanks for reading the whole tutorial though, I guess.

Actually, I'm very glad for this comment, because I didn't know you had to use a clipping mask, so maybe it would be easy for others to put it in the artists comments?

I see C: I didn't know other people were having the issue since no one commented on it. I'll simply see if I can edit this file, since people'll see that before they read the artist comments. Thank you for letting me know.

Oh well, as long as no one else is having any troubles with it. I have followed tutorials and not had things turn out as they should and been so disappointed, so just didn't want that happening to others.
I am sorry about the shortness of the previous comment. I meant no offense, just wasn't thinking, really! I realized later (before you even said anything actually) I should have mentioned that it's quite a helpful tutorial (obviously for your DD and congrats on that). I didn't even know that bit about the channels panel and clicking the circle to select all the white. It seems so much more useful than spending laborious time tracing over lineart, or going mad trying to select with the stupid wand tool!

Oh what the. . . it got a DD?! I was wondering why there were comments on it today xD!
And no, I shouldn't have been all retarded when I replied to your original comment because I've had that happen to me too; where I'm diligently trying to follow a tutorial and then fall off the side of the planet at one part and end up just giving up.
I didn't take offense to your comment, and I hope you didn't take offense to my reply |D; sorry if I upset you

Well, congrats on your DD! Haha and I feel honored to be the one to make you aware of it. >:}
You weren't retarded, don't worry. It sucks to work on something for others, then have some douchebag (me, in this case) up in there, only criticizing, whether deliberate or not. In any case, I understand your reaction, definitely no offense taken! Glad to clear up that little misunderstanding and such. *Hugs awkwardly.*
