Description DescriptionI never feel right making tutorials because, I don't consider myself a very advanced user of Photoshop. I never feel like I'm in the right place telling other people how to do it.

And I know this isn't an advanced tutorial, but many people don't know how to do this. I also know there are other tutorials out there explaining this exact same thing. . .

I was asked recently how to get the white off sketch images and it reminded me of how often I really am asked that. So have a tutorial for everyone in the future who needs to know.

no problem, i'm glad it helped! C:

i totally feel the same way as you xD!! unfortunately for me, my background color is usually like dark blue or something and my lines are like neon purple. so i have to use "select color range"

For changing the lineart colors, isn't it easier to just lock the layer with the lineart and draw on it? When you lock the layer and the background is transparent, only the lineart is affected. =3

Anyway, THANK YOU for this tutorial!

yeah you can lock the layer with the lineart on it but i dont like doing that because i change lineart colors a lot and it's easier to me just to alter a separate layer than to have to recolor the lines by hand again xD

you're welcome

Oh thank uu~!! I've been wondering for forever how people got their linearts gradiented or colored
But as for the other stuff I'm afraid I have Elements so I can't do that other stuff <:3

no problem!! <3

don't worry, I'm an elements user too.
I think the most you can do about colorizing lines in elements is to use layer modes. There isn't any way I know of to pull the lineart off the white (though I haven't used elements since v2.0) but you can add hues to the lines at least a little, here are a couple ways.

1. Not sure what the new tabs are but somewhere under Image or Edit or something, there should be a Hue/Saturation option. Once you click on it, a dialogue box will appear and there's a small checkbox to the right that says "colorize". It'll add color to the lines if you check the box and you can use the hue/saturation/brightness slider to adjust what color you want.

2. You can make a new layer and set the mode to either Hue or Colorize (sometimes one works better than the other and vice versa) and simply use the large airbrush to manually paint color onto the lines. this works pretty good if you want multiple colors. or you can use the hard round brush if you want to color specific lines accurately. If you just want an overall two-color tone change, the gradient tool works cool too.

There's another way, but I can't really remember. Unfortunately, you wont be able to have REAL vibrant lineart since the only way you can color under it is if you have the layer on multiply (aka your lines will always be darker than the color below it). but the color will still show through and it does make a big difference if you use it right c:

hope that helped <3

Yea I remember when I first found colorize I was like "AWESOME" and then barely used it xD
However that group thing works on it. I was so surprised. I had no idea at all about that .D.

this tutorial is better than just setting the lines layer to multiply. But one question, do u outline everything in ink first, or is your scanner just better than mine? lol

Btw used this tecnique here [link] ref sheet

My scanner might just be better than yours, the example I used in this tutorial was just a pencil drawing :'D

ooh the ref looks awesome ;;

Thanking you fromt he bottom of my heart. for ages i've been using pen tool to make lineart and i alwys felt it ruined my pictures and my hands aren't steady enough to draw it all in my hand on the tablet. This is a huge time saver and so much simpler. thank you so much ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinerai In reply to TheRoaringRaar [2009-10-28 20:34:35 +0000 UTC]

You are so welcome!~!

however, as for drawing by hand on your tablet. It really helps if your image is large. And by large I mean not smaller than 2500px in either direction. Aditionally, it helps to zoom in and do actual lineart at 200-300% C:

makes the lines cleaner.
using an image so large kinda hides handwiggle when you resize the final thing to the smallified version

that's what i've been doing up until now but I get hand cramps really easily. plus, it is quite time consuming and i'm restricted to time i can spend on fun drawings. but thanks all the same. it's really appreciated ^_^

i want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this. here's the story:
i had spent over 3 hours digitally inking my lineart, when my computer froze and restarted. when it turned back on, all i had was a jpeg of all my work, and i had lost all the layers. i was devastated, but came across your tutorial and ripped my jpeg lineart onto a new layer. oh, and btw, i dont even have photoshop... i have gimp, so i kinda had to wing it. but this helped me tremendously, and saved all my work!!! thank you SOOO much!!!

Shinerai In reply to lulu-LOVE [2009-10-19 00:25:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I am just so glad to hear that!! <3 I hate it when computers do that! My computer's power cable used to be poorly connected so it'd RANDOMLY restart! Unfortunately for me I have a bad reputation of not saving my work until I close it for the day so I'd love like 12-16 hours of progress at a time, hnng!! I'm glad i could help!
