Description DescriptionI never feel right making tutorials because, I don't consider myself a very advanced user of Photoshop. I never feel like I'm in the right place telling other people how to do it.

And I know this isn't an advanced tutorial, but many people don't know how to do this. I also know there are other tutorials out there explaining this exact same thing. . .

I was asked recently how to get the white off sketch images and it reminded me of how often I really am asked that. So have a tutorial for everyone in the future who needs to know.

I have never been able to find a decent tutorial on pulling the white from scanned sketches that aren't super-cleaned-up already. I sketch very, very messily, but I hate having to draw out pretty lineart in Photoshop so I usually just use my sketch-lines, but I've always wished there was a simple way to be able to colorize the lineart without disturbing the colors underneath.

This has helped me tremendously, thank you so much for making it.

What version of photoshop are you using? It'd be more efficient to tell me what problems you are having instead of just telling me it doesn't work I'll try my best to help.

CS4. And I did finally figure it out. I'm one of those people that need to be told absolutely everything. I forgot to put the view back onto the black-fill layer ^^: Thanks for offering though. Yet, I do have one other question. Is there any way to outline the artwork with just a nice black line and get rid of the pencil marks?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinerai In reply to MistingWolf [2009-09-01 18:05:40 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, I see! I'm glad you figured it out C:

you mean to have crisp lineart instead of pencil? To do that, my friend, i'm sorry to say it requires tracing of the entire piece with the brush tool. Woe, it can be time consuming.

MistingWolf In reply to Shinerai [2009-09-02 06:24:01 +0000 UTC]

Okay, that's what I do already. Though I'm more familiar with Paint and it's wonderful curve tool, so I'll stick with that for my outlining :}

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinerai In reply to MistingWolf [2009-09-02 15:13:34 +0000 UTC]

but paint is in pixels, right? that's definitely different from the pen tool.

I suppose, but I'm a complete newbie for PS. I only got it so I could use your tutorial to be rid of that nasty white fuzz. :} I'll have to give it a try.

earthsea-23 In reply to ??? [2009-08-22 15:56:21 +0000 UTC]

OK, so I scan this right (300 DPI), then do everything you say here in PS (even tweak the brightness/contrast) but it still is grainy! Why is this, do you know?

Shinerai In reply to earthsea-23 [2009-08-23 04:12:01 +0000 UTC]

Do you have a screenshot? :'<

earthsea-23 In reply to Shinerai [2009-08-23 17:26:25 +0000 UTC]

Ok, wait, I have a recent deviation and when you full-view it, you can see the grainy lineart (which was smooth in ink before!) [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinerai In reply to earthsea-23 [2009-08-23 21:25:17 +0000 UTC]

interesting, I see what you mean by grainy! can i see the original sketch before you pulled the lineart off?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

earthsea-23 In reply to Shinerai [2009-08-24 02:23:55 +0000 UTC]

Alright, I looked at it in PS, and I didn't know that it was grainy there too. I guess it may be my scanner. But whenever I put it at more than 300 DPI, it malfunctions and keeps saying "progress" and the bar will keep reloading. You did say you used 300 DPI for you regular lineart, right? I know it's not the ink, because it is smooth in person. Something might be going on here, but I don't know what. Thanks for taking the time to help me, too!

I spent so long messing with my linearts when I wanted to make them prettified before and always failed, as well as taking an eternity.
Thank you so much for such an awesome and easy to follow tutorial Shin-chan
