Description
Tooth & ClawChapter 1 - "Sir Milo"
by Chris Spry
Introducing Chapter 1 of Tooth & Claw, "Sir Milo".
Trouble is stirring in the muskrat village of "Greenwater" and its up to 'Sir Milo' to help save a family in peril, but not all is at is seems to be. If you like cartoons involving anthropomorphic animals set in a medeival time period with darker and more serious overtones, then this one's for you. The start of hopefully more to come. Chapter 2 is already in progress.

Heh, I'm pretty sure this will get it's recognition one way or another...Word of mouth can be slow, unless you know the right people to spread it to Trust me, if I knew how to nominate for a Daily Deviation, I would most certainly do so
lol 7 years of Deviantart, and the basics still escape me D: Haha~ I'll look into it for you anyway
And wow, really? That's great to hear! I'm sure this will be a raging success! Good luck

Thanks. Chapter 1 is supposed to draw you in, chapter 2 coming up is supposed to give you a feel for what life is like in his world.

Well, it does require a lot of time, patience, concentration, and artistic ability. I went to an animation school for a year too, where I learned so much about animation and the industry. If you have the desire and the will, you can do it. You should look into some animation schools.

Thanks. I was Milo and a co-worker (Jenee) was Coriander.
Yep, I do this professionally. This is a side project of mine. After animating fluffy sheep all week, you wanna do something you like to do. I always have ideas for things and this is one of them.

Thanks. It's looking like I'll finish up chapter 2 in a few months. Things calm down quite a bit. Chapter 1 was designed to draw in the viewer and give a sense of the world that Milo lives in, even if it is a dream. However, in chapter 2 you get to see how he lives, meet his folks, and get let in on what's going on in his world and the dangers that lurk.

I always envy those who can do this kind of thing in flash. Flash confuses me to no end...I managed an eye-blinking sequence that really wasn't all the great and that's it.
This is amazing

I went to school for traditional animation and Flash was a part of that education, so it allows me to do things like this. Flash is easily accessible to lots of people and that's why you get a lot of really bad flash animated stuff out there. Even at school it took me about a week to really be able to do anything in flash and once I started to understand how animation studios used flash and their procedures, everything started lining up and made sense. We had a good teacher. Thanks!

Heh...didn't help that I was out with an eye injury (black eye from tripping over my own feet and faceplanting..which is why I try not to run anymore <.<; ) for a good portion of the Flash class I took...so it was hard to get caught up when I came back. As the class was on to bigger things by the time I came back.

Oh yeah? What kind of Flash clash was it? Was it for 2D animation, programming, web? There's so many applications out there for Flash.
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
VioletWhirlwind In reply to Sprybug [2010-06-30 05:56:18 +0000 UTC]
It was for web mostly. They didn't really concentrate long on just animation...but went to the interactive aspect of it...which confused me even MORE. XD I think if they'd concentrated more on the animation I might have been better able to learn it (there probably should have been two classes for it; one for animation..and one for interactive...they glommed them both togeather which made the class progress too fast for me)
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Sprybug In reply to VioletWhirlwind [2010-06-30 05:58:42 +0000 UTC]
Aha. I went to an animation specific school. We learned how to traditionally animate for 3 terms and the last term we applied it to flash. Sounds like the class you took was more for the technical side of flash rather than the artistic.

VioletWhirlwind In reply to Sprybug [2010-06-30 06:16:24 +0000 UTC]
yeah. pretty much. I was in graphic design as a feild...I graduated...but now, after the fact, I don't think it was exactly the field I wanted...I wanted to be a graphic artist...but my major concentrated on the practical aplications of design; in other words, advertising...and I kind of...hate advertising. XD;

Sprybug In reply to VioletWhirlwind [2010-06-30 09:17:26 +0000 UTC]
Unfortunately that's a big part of the GD field. Pretty much taking others ideas and making them work in a nice presentable form. But there is still quite a bit of creativity in that field. The reason why I got into animation, was because I loved the medium as a story telling module. I always have ideas for stories and I could draw half-way decent, so I decided to do a 180 on my life and give it a shot, all chips in. That year at school was the best year of my life. Right now I'm a Flash animator, doing tons of character animation. It can be frustrating quite a bit of the time, but in the end its really rewarding.

VioletWhirlwind In reply to Sprybug [2010-07-01 07:28:39 +0000 UTC]
Heh, yeah I learned that the hard way. But there's really no jobs in that field right now anyway. :/ So I'm going to go into a dog-grooming class instead. Heh.
I'm not giving up on being a digital artist or something though. I'd kind of like to animate...but at the same time I know I wouldn't have the patience for it XD;

Sprybug In reply to VioletWhirlwind [2010-07-01 08:17:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, sometimes it requires a LOT of patience. Sometimes I want to do terrible things to the characters I animate. Like today, I ended up scrapping about 3 hours of work because the dance I was doing made the character look like she was having a seizure rather than dancing. I spent the rest of the day on it and got it right. All 3.5 seconds. I usually like to get about 10-12 seconds done in a day. But it's a complex thing and those always take longer. Good luck to you in your quest.

Very nice work. The dialogue seemed a bit cheesy at times, but the animation was still smooth and the story kept my interest throughout.
Hope to see the next installment soon and good luck with the two competitions you mentioned in the annotation!

Sprybug In reply to Fragmented-Mask [2010-06-28 04:36:25 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. Hehe. It was supposed to be kind of cheesy actually, being that it was Milo's dream/nightmare. There's no way I would of had that kind of dialog in his waking world. Not to mention the series of events that quickly unfolded. This was to draw you in and get a feel for the tension that's currently in his world, even if this part is all in his sleepy head.

Ewwww
Jerbal luvin... x.x
Lol no, I'm only joking.
I liked the way things played out.. the story so far kind of reminds me of my favourite book series redwall. The way it was played out all throughout, even at the end when it was all a dream. The only thing that diddn't remind me of redwall was when they made out.
Other than the fact it's a lot like redwall but isn't, I still enjoyed the animation. Good job.

Sprybug In reply to ProphetAbstract [2010-06-27 20:01:01 +0000 UTC]
LOL. You and several others have said the same thing.
Redwall is quite the interesting enigma to me. I loved the idea, the characters made it interesting, but I couldn't finish the book, because I'm not a fan of that kind of storytelling. I never ran across a book like that, where I could read it as quickly as I did because it flowed very well, but then come across things that had me go, "Wait a minute..." and then stop and analyze and realize "There's a problem here".
I think I have a too analytical mind to just turn my brain off and enjoy it unfortunately. Maybe I could have if I read it when I was younger. I think I was too old when I first read it. But I'm glad you like it. With Redwall being as popular as it is, makes me believe that this idea I have, as long as I don't screw it up, can be enjoyed by a large group as well and that's what makes it really worth while.
Thanks!

No Probs dude *Hug emoticon insert here*
I do look forward to future animations, so I'll add your channel to my whatch list (Just because i'm awesome like that )
Are you planning on making this into a full fledged story line? Or just a bunch of animations that are in part to each other yet arn't very relevant to each other?
*Also I found the voice acting funny because I just imagined you or someone else that you know to just speak into a microphone. It's pretty good but still made me lol a lil bit when they first started talking.

Sprybug In reply to ProphetAbstract [2010-06-27 20:53:17 +0000 UTC]
Hehe. We all did it seperately, however I would have preferred if we had gotten together so we could play off of each other, but we couldn't ever get together at one time to do it, especially my nephew who lives in a whole other state! He just had 2 lines though. We all used the same digital recorder so the sound quality was consistent, except for Alec which recorded his father muskrat lines at an actual audio studio.
The timing worked out where the animation studio I work for had booked an audio studio to do some line recordings for a DVD we were working on and had some extra time for Alec to do his part on my project. Alec Knox is my animation director at work and we get along great. He also has animated on the Mr. Men show and Slacker Cats.
Jamie Haggerty has been in the Biz for over 20 years and you'll hear his voice in Chapter 2 as Milo's father, "Copper". He does pretty much all the post production work on "Tooth & Claw".
OH! To answer your question, yes, the entire story is in my head and I want to make this an on-going web series. I just wish animation production for such a small crew (Jamie and I with some help here and there from Kasey Gifford aka Killskerry on DA), didn't take SOOOOOoooooo long. It would go quicker if I really simplified everything and didn't care about animation.

ProphetAbstract In reply to Sprybug [2010-06-27 21:06:26 +0000 UTC]
Man, all that is pretty epic.
I dunno how well this suggestion may work but you could try getting all of your friends to voice act on their own time at home, then send you the file of their voices and then you can add them in? Like they could send you a .wav file or something over skype or other programs. I dunno.
Awesome, I was hoping to hear that. I'd definetly be interested in following your series.
DOn't simplify it too much D: lol
It would go quicker but you gatta think.. Would you want it to go quiker and be satisfied? Or take the time for perfection and be completely satisfied with your work?
It's all in the way you want to distribute it.

Fortunately everyone (except my nephew and the guy who plays Milo's friend in chapter 3) all work together at the same studio. I got my nephew to do it, cause he does school plays and his part isn't reoccurring so I don't have to worry about continuously trying to get him to record. Recording the audio for chapter 1 was done when everyone had free time and I didn't get the voice of Coriander until a few months before it was completed! I couldn't coordinate with the original person that I wanted for her, so I got one of our "live presenters" to do it and she did a wonderful job.
All the recording for Chapter 2 and 3 is already wrapped up, minus the character of Scout in chapter 3. Still have no idea who's going to play that. He's a rough & tough adolescent guardian who always thinks that he can get the better of Milo. I did a scratch track of him with a southern drawl. That's what I would like to get for him, but we'll see.

ProphetAbstract In reply to Sprybug [2010-06-27 22:23:53 +0000 UTC]
Well why don't you get help from others on the internet? Just send them the lines and have them record on their own computer then send it to you? Just a suggestion.
If any more characters you need voices for come up.
Must be awesome to know some people in a recording studio.
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Sprybug In reply to ProphetAbstract [2010-06-29 09:30:05 +0000 UTC]
My concern on that one, is that the quality of sound can differ from computer to computer, usually because of the microphone being used, different sound levels, and possible background noise, you can usually tell, even when it's just slightly different and I don't want that to throw off the viewer.
Well, I do work in an animation studio and my director and boss knows some audio studio people. I don't know anyone though.
We have an audio digital recorder that I use for most of the recordings and it does a really good job as long as you are in a quiet place to record, because it picks up a little too well.

I saw the double post. For some reason the viewing and commenting portions on videos uses the old site method and doesn't seem like it posts when it really does. But I got the messages and thank you again. I sometimes wish I could go back and redesign the head shapes. I wanted them to be simplified but sometimes I feel that I oversimplified them.
But the response has been very good so far and I must be doing something right. This has been entered in 2 international animation festivals so far. Red Stick in the USA and Ottawa in Canada. I don't know if it has been accepted yet in either, but I should be finding out very soon!
