Thanks very much, Akhi; this is my own personal favorite of these animal drawings, but most people tend to walk right by it...

This one took just under 2 weeks, Cecil; I'm currently working on a series of 5 oil paintings that have taken three and a half years, so far... Yikes

Yup, little dragon, and I do miss it, along with the special clarity of black and white... I'll go back to it as soon as I can...

how do you use ink to create that effect?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SRaffa In reply to bleached-heart [2005-01-17 19:36:58 +0000 UTC]
The technique is called "stippling"... you basically build up a bunch of dots; fewer where the tones are light, more where the tones are dark. I did this with a technical fountain pen called a Rapidograph; I used the finest point (0.6) available. Great for meditating...

Photorealism at its finest. Do you use rapidographs?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SRaffa In reply to nosyd [2004-12-01 04:49:51 +0000 UTC]
Hallelujah! Yes! I've talked to people on this site who don't know what a rapidograph IS!!! My own rapidograph adventures peaked with the use of a 6-ott, the finest point they make... I drew a portrait of Marilyn Monroe [link] with one and, basically realized what I'd done was manually create an airbrush painting... so I mostly switched over to an airbrush. Thanks for your comments!

Ah, interesting... I've been using rapidographs for over 10 years now, and some of the more detailed bits I don't think I could get done with anything else, except maybe pencil (like this [link] and [link] ). But I think I see what you mean! Still, you'll probably always have a soft spot in your heart for ol' black & white, eh?

Oh, God, yeah-- And for rapidographs, too, my friend... I've been deep into the same 5 oil paintings for three years now... I mean, I'm actually NOSTALGIC for gouache-- trust me, don't get me STARTED on rapidographs (or on the old, truly non clogging FW drawing ink of the mid to late '70s...)

I love this! Another favorite You've been putting up a lot of animal drawings. How come no hippos? Hippos are awesome. I <3 hippos! But elephants are cool too ^__^

Something called Echo Gallery One determined which animals I was to draw, but I got to determine how I'd draw them... I'd love to draw you a hippo, poop; I'd do it in this same style, if you'd like...

You would?? That would be cool! But you don't have to.. unless you're bored and have freetime. Your avatar is different everytime I come on here!

SRaffa In reply to po0p [2004-09-16 22:41:39 +0000 UTC]
I know; people have been giving me a hard time about my avatar all day; I don't know why I'm so easily bored with it-- maybe I could use YOUR face for it and that'd finally satisfy me...
Definitely not bored, almost no free time; but I haven't worked with a rapidograph in so many years, and this would be my excuse to finally go in and dust it off, get back on the stipple horse...

It's ok. Your constant avatar changes are amusing haha ..no freetime? Nevermind then! You don't have to draw me a hippo ^__^

No of course not, but I will if you'd like... or actually, maybe you should draw a hippo; show me something that conveys how much you love hippos, Diana; I predict: instant classic.

holy jesus how long did this take you? every tiny wrinkle on the trunk and face and ears.... wow. ive never seen an elephant in person. i always wanted to. i've never been to a zoo or anything. anywho, you did a wonderful job as always. was this a project or somethin? your earlier work seems to be more direct than... lets say.. "Gardening at Night" or "Paradox" that tells a story within the lines

I got out of art school wanting to make a living as an illustrator; the animals were done for a company that turned around and printed these things on canvass and sold them in stores... come about '91 (and Gardening At Night was the first) I started painting just for the sake of my own mental hygiene, and got a day job to know where my next cigarette was coming from... I like the animals though... hey, some time I'll show you the painting I had to do of Jesus meeting Elvis in heaven, and you'll see why the day job was a really, really good idea...

.....jesus meeting elvis? i HAVE to see it. now im very intrigued.
....and now i want to pick up a crucifix and play air guitar with it and gyrate my hips, for some strange reason...

OK, but how do we work this so that no one else sees it?
I'll put it in scraps, you take a look, let me know you've seen it, I'll delete it.
Deal?
Seriously, B, no one else needs to know about this, and after, we'll never speak of this again.
Whatayasay?

alright, well, that was certainly different... lol. i mean you did a gorgeous job on it but the subject matter.... well a little frightening and a bit cheery. lol im not sure how to describe it. its like the result of an acid trip at the rock n roll hall of fame. and why would jesus be the first one to greet elvis? shouldnt jesus be welcoming other more deserving people in heaven? (if there is a jesus, or a heaven). i mean, like mother theresa, or aunt jemima? okay scratch the last one
lol what i really want to know is..... what was going thru your head when you decided to do it

Okay, but then i'll need one comedically painful confession from YOU in return...
Um, there's an art supply store downtown here where I used to know everyone who worked there... they'd send freelance clients my way. They sent me a psychopath who loved nothing more than Elvis, unless of course, it was the Son of God. He'd dreamed this thing up and figured it was going to net him a fortune, if not his standing as a man of great and discriminating taste, once he'd had it printed on, um, dinner plates...
I laughed him off, shared a pizza with him, and then went off on the only major trip I've ever taken, to Russia...
when I got back, all of my money had dried up (that's a seperate, art-related story) and in no position to laugh at the pychopath OR his mighty obsessions...
The things we do for money.
Long story kinda short: I got paid a third of what we'd agreed upon and ended up stuck with this silly artifact. Simple lesson, learned late in life: never sit down to paint ANYTHING you wouldn't want to be stuck with...

lol that makes sense. i thought you just did this out of boredom. and thats really creepy that he wanted it on.... dinner plates? thats very creepy.... if i saw jesus and elvis underneith my mashed potatoes i'd be a little queasy
but i understand. and i dont know what kind of painful confession i could give you.... i've never done anything for money. well except one time when i was about 10 years old i was paid a whopping 25 dollars and 42 cents to drink a bottle of rubbing alcohol. i didnt get thru the whole bottle but i got my money for being an ass... and i have no idea what i did with it.

Remember what I said about Love, Mean Surprises, and Humans? I gotta ask, B... who pays a 10 year old to drink rubbing alcohol?
If you don't want to talk about this, you know that's okay; but congratulations on having survived someone who I might've decided to put out of all of our misery, if I'd ever met them...

nah i dont mind... it was someone i used to be friends with when i was younger. i dont know what's happened to him since i last saw him... when i was like, 11 years old maybe. i did stupid things like that all the time when i was younger... i never thought i'd make it passed 16 years old. but here i am. i drank rubbing alcohol once or twice by my own free will when i was really bad into drugs and i couldnt get anything else.... i knew from my previous experience with it that it was disgusting as all hell, but it worked. *shrug* i've made a lot of terrible choices in my life
