Description
16 x 22Gouache paints with coloured pencil on watercolour paper
*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all of my Potter art work, building up to (hopefully) having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***
In retrospect... I'd love to re-drawΒ Hagrid for thisΒ piece. I don't hate the drawing - there are parts I like very much. But those who know me well, know I love Hagrid. I love illustrating him. But sometimes, excitement for drawing/painting a character turns into rushing. And looking back there are a couple aspects I rushed through. I'm not going to say what they are and risk "ruining" the painting for anyone else. Again, there is a lot about him that I really like. I''ll just say - he could be better.
I was very happy with the composition of the painting though. Hagrid and his size dominates the piece, but then you follow his eyes down to Norbert, which then leads you to the Trio (and Fang) - all experiencing Norbert's hatching in their own way. Then back to the window where we see Draco peeking in. OH, and my vision of Hagrid's hut is a little more homey than I think the average person see's it - especially thanks to the movies. Not much of it get's shown off, but enough to see it's a different place than most expect.

For a minute I thought Harry was wearing a Superman T-shirt.

What was he actually wearing there?

It was based on a T-shirt with a British emblem on it. Not the flag, but something from England specifically. But even after that, when I did the art, I didn't copy it directly, just used it to give the feel like there was something there... which clearly worked

Hagrid is one smitten kitten! There's so much love in his eyes. Funny enough I looked at this painting the exact same way you described it (Hagrid to Norbert to the trio to Fang) but I completely missed out on Draco until you mention it. Nice job of working him in too!

Hagrid having his cute on was the name of this illustration for me! I mean, there was plenty to show - I try and pick moments that can show as much as possible, and this chapter has the perfect time, with Draco in the background; it's subtle, but that's all he needs to be for this piece.

Hagrid's expression is on point. He looks so adoring at Norbert (Norberta). The expressions are all great, I like how Ron's face is like, "Cool, a dragon." while the others have very concerned looks.Β

An illustration can be made by the little details. Now, Hagrid's expression isn't exactly little - LOL - but he's not a little person in any kind of way. But it's being true to who the characters are and how they'd react to any given moment. Thank you for noticing this little details I tried to apply to my painting

I absolutely LOVE the way you drew Hagrid here. I is so cute and I can totally imagine him that way when he first laid eyes on Norbert(a).

Thank you! Hagrid might be a large and imposing, but he's got one of the softest hearts of all the characters in the series

soooooooooooooooo cute love Hagrid's expression
I like what you've done with his hut, too, more like I imagine it than most fanart I've seen

Thanks so much - Hagrid is all about the cute in this scene... at least that's what I thought he should be Β
And thanks for the compliments about his hut. I think most fan art is influenced by the movies. And while the movies are good, they aren't canon in my mind.

I totally agree
well, since I haven't watched the movies on purpose, I've just googled "Hagrid's hut" and saw what they did... it's not bad, but, like you say, not something we imagine from the book... I have the feeling Hagrid takes care of his hut, even if it's not much, and decorates it with what he sees as good taste
