Description February 2021 | 22 x 16 | Gouache Paints with Coloured Pencil and (light) Airbrushing on Mounted HotPress Watercolor Paper.

So this painting is a couple of firsts for me. First and foremost of those firsts, it's my first Percy Jackson painting! The other first; I took the opportunity to try a new surface - it's pretty much the exact same kind of paper I usually use (it's even the same brand) but mounted on a board. The cost was comparable to what I normally do, but the prospect of not having to do any taping beyond some basic stuff I do for tidiness was intriguing. It worked fine, though it received the paint slightly different than I'm used to. Right now I'm thinking, I'll probably only use it for any paintings I do that are larger than what I most often do, because in the past, anything larger I had to stretch a canvas to do.

As for the scene itself - I think I'm happy with it. I was kind of nervous doing it. Mr.Bunner/Chiron could have turned out a little better, but oh well. I like the way the Mrs.Dodds/Alecto the Fury turned out, though the handful of snakes I put in her hair get lost, I think she has a nice creepy quality. As for Percy, even though he has a number of physical similarities to Harry Potter, I wanted to make sure they looked like different people and I think it worked out pretty well. I'm extremely happy with how his sword, Riptide turned out; the blade and the EFX.

Hey, Keith!

Just out of interest, where do you keep all artworks after you've finished drawing/painting them? You have a very wide range of illustrations and it is hard to imagine them casually lying around ... Also, how long does it take you draw such incredibly detailed artwork (right from the rough pencil draft to last stroke of paint that completes it all ...) ?

Hi Anthony,

My finished art, I try to put in plastic protective sleeves (though those cost a lot and I have been getting behind, so my most recent stuff isn't) and they are stacked in the closet of my studio. It's starting to get a little cramped, so I'm going to have to start thinking of a new way to store them, but the hubby and I are planning on selling our house and finding a new place in a year or so - so I'm not going to worry about it till I see the new space I need to work with.

How long each piece takes me to complete varies. I recently completed an art in progress section on my website, showing conception, to sketches, to the final touches of a painting. I used the most recent Potter painting I completed, the first chapter from Prisoner of Azkaban as the example piece. It's not the most detailed of my paintings, but the process is pretty much the same.  But if you look there, it explains a little bit about how I do things - the drawing step is the one that is the hardest for me to gage the time. I do most of my drawings "on the go" during my lunch break at work, or if I'm waiting for an appointment or something. I then take those drawings and scan them into the computer and assemble the drawing of the painting and use that to make the final painting. The painting part is a bit easier to time since I can only do that at home.  Sometimes they'll go way faster than I expected and other times they'll go much slower than they should, but most of my paintings are finished in about 3-4 full days of working... though I rarely get full days to work on them.

I hope that answers your questions - if you were looking for anything more specific, or want to know anything else, feel free to ask

Thanks Anthony,

We look forward to finding a better place for us as well. It's probably going to be at least a year before we're even ready to start looking though. So I'll be where I am for a bit longer

Very nice design works.  I've seen the movies but I've never read the books but I know he's 12 in the book.  It's just a shame he didn't use that sword on his stepfather!  I really wish I could commission you!  I look forward to seeing what else you come up with.

Thank you very much! I do recommend the books, I find them to be a fun read; very funny, good action and like Potter, the drama builds with each book till the climax of the series. They're probably my next favorite series after Potter.

The movies are alright, I like Logan Lerman as Percy, even though he is way too old for the part, but he get's the character and humor of the story... and the movies have sort of gone their own way with the story so the ages aren't quite as important as in Potter.

Like with Potter, my illustrations will be based on the books. So he's just a pup in this scene. More to come down the line!

Wonderful!  I really like how Percy and Mr. Bunner/Chiron are depicted and the fury is so creepy!  Also great background in the museum!

Thanks so much for the kind words and compliments! I can't take too much credit on the background though, I just used reference photos found online of the museum they are at in that scene.

this is so cool!!!!!!

I really love, again, how many details you put in your art... the movement here is great, too... and Chiron is exactly like I imagine him!!

(and your Fury is so wonderfully creepy)

Thanks for the compliments on the characters, though I can't take too much credit on the background - I just used reference photos I found online of the museum Percy was at in that scene.

They won't come as often as my Potter art, but more Percy art is in the works.
