Description
- Wow ! She's exactly like you ! said Rebecca- The resemblance is not striking, answered Gillian, deliberately misinterpreting what Rebecca said.
- No but … I was talking about her missing limbs.
- I know. But I already told you I don't like to be defined by my lack of limbs. It's as if I said any person with four full limbs is exactly like you …
- Yes. You're right. Sorry.
- It's ok. That being said, you're correct, she misses her limbs exactly as me. I didn't think I would ever encounter someone like that. It's so rare a condition.
- Yes, that was extremely improbable.
Rebecca stayed silent for a moment, then said:
- Jumping like that on a single prosthesis is really impressive.
- Indeed. It's like me when I still had my leg (*) . Except she has a stump just as I have now and hops on a prosthesis ... I tried that, after I lost my leg, but I gave up. Too difficult. Too dangerous. I assumed it was not possible. Obviously, I was wrong.
- Want to try again ?
- I had some nasty falls. I got seriously hurt several times. I'm not really willing to take that kind of risks again. Besides, it's exhausting.
- Yeah. I noticed she was out of breath.
- And the way I'm walking may be slow but I can stop whenever I want.
- You're right. She said she couldn't stop. I suppose that's because she falls if she does.
- Exactly. It's very unstable. I can tell.
- Unable to stop without falling. She must be crazy.
- There are ways for her to stop. She can find someone to hold her. She can lean against a wall or a tree, or this fence. But to do that she must slow down first, and the slower you go, the harder it is to control. She could also choose a soft ground like grass to fall without hurting herself. She must have learned to fall. But of course, she can't get up again without help. Yes, she must be crazy.
- And have an incredible sense of balance, and a great physical condition.
- Yeah, that too.

Nice little interlude before the arrival of the mysterious Henry! It's lovely to see the two friends talking together so animatedly!
The conversation between them is perfect... Gillian not afraid to speak her mind and really showing what a feisty and independent young woman she is. Her statements really ring true! I'd love to have seen her attempting the 'single prosthesis hop' herself, even with the tumbles she obviously took.
It does make me want to see more of (and find out more about) the fascinating Deborah! Her home life must be amazing if she gets around like this on a regular basis... or does she revert to the pegleg rather than the blade at home as we've seen before, despite its inefficiency!
What a superb story this is!

It's an interlude, exactly ! I'm glad it shows I've managed to make this lively.
And I'm glad you like what they're saying. Thank you ! An interesting idea, Gillian attempting the single prosthesis hop. And not to difficult to make ... I'll think about it (no promise though, I already have more ideas than I could make pictures ... unless I manage to seriously increase my speed ).
Deborah's doesn't use this prosthesis at home. Given how hard it is to control her trajectory and speed, she needs plenty of space, where it doesn't really matter if she has to make a side step, or can't slow down as quickly as she wants to . In picture #8 I make Henry say to Gillian that before this day he had only see her in "a wheelchair or with stubbies like yours".
Thank you very much for the compliment on the story, it means a lot to me .

Now I really want a training montage of Deborah learning to hop like that^^

At least I can provide an idea: the training would involve a treadmill (with voice command !), a harness and elastic straps to suspend her to the ceiling and helping her to keep upright and to avoid falling.
Something I've been thinking about if I were to give some credibility to this, and somewhat elaborate on Deborah's story, is that she was not born like that as I first imagined her but with only her legs missing, and that she lost her arms only a few years ago, which gave her plenty of time to practice before that. With arms for balance, using crutches, grabbing handrails, breaking a fall and even getting up by herself, it would be a lot more easy ... or rather not so close to impossible.
And later she would only have to adjust to the loss of her arms. No big deal.
