Born the only child of Vitani and Chakavu, Fujo is well-beloved by his mothers, and grew up with a fairly normal childhood. He was a lot more out-going and rambunctious than his mothers, and he had a thirst for adventure, which often attracted trouble. There have been many times where he got in trouble only for his mothers to save and scold him. Though he knows he shouldn't stray so much, he can't help it when he feels the pull to see something new. His friendly nature also made him a hit with the other cubs, and while he had many friends, his absolute best friend was Shaka, prince and Kovu's chosen heir. Fujo, however, didn't much mind his friend's royal status, and often helped him sneak out of lessons and out of Priderock for a bit of fun. Despite Shaka's grumpy nature, he and Fujo got along just fine, and it became known around Priderock that when those two were together, trouble was afoot.

As the cubs grew a bit older, they continued to spend time together, exploring or sparring with one another to pass the time before they became teenagers. Though Shaka was hesitant about becoming king, Fujo supported the idea of Shaka being king, and he promised to be his right-hand once he was old enough. Their childhood ignorance, however, was shattered with the news of Kovu's affair. Shaka distanced himself from everyone, including Fujo, who despite his best efforts, couldn't get through to Shaka. He was hurt by his best friend's rejection, and while his cousin Harufu suggested he just forget about Shaka, Fujo refused to give up on his friend, and after his mothers spoke with Shaka, he was able to offer support, even if Fujo himself didn't fully understand the situation.
