If you press + you'll see a preview of your flash. This automatically generates a .swf file in the same folder as the .fla flash file you are working on.

It is the .swf file you need to upload to DA as a deviation. Depending on what you've done, it usually goes in the Flash->Animations category.

To make a play button you'll need to look at putting some basic actionscript into your file. Its better for you to look a tutorial than to get a pointer in a comment; because you have to set up your file, layers and code correctly for it to work.

That said, once you've got the hang of play buttons you'll be up and running to check DA or google for a good walkthrough.

This tutorial is more a bit of a mishmash of basic animation and flash techniques. It assumes you know your way around the Flash interface.

First, I'd suggest mucking around in Flash to get yourself as familiar with it on your own as you can. I don't know any beginners flash tutorials by hand but you should be able to find plenty by typing a search into DA or into Google.

All the best with your animations.

Whoa, nice work! I find this very useful since all the animations I've tried have failed....miserably.

creatureart In reply to Spotty001 [2008-09-28 22:45:56 +0000 UTC]

Animation can be hard. I have a lot of failed attempts sitting on my computer. What can sometimes help is planning out what you animate before you start, if you haven't already. Helps to give you a focus and keep things on track.

Spotty001 In reply to creatureart [2008-09-29 21:45:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Sometimes i get really stumped when thinking of something to animate. My biggest challenge will be animating the characters to talk and such...this'll be hard-ish...lol!

This is pretty useful. I just got Adobe Flash CS3 Professional today, but I won't be able to toy around with it until tomorrow. *has work in the morning* Thanks for the tutorial! I shall use it in my practices! n_n

...However, something has been bugging me about this... Is it possible to use sketches from paper (like you sketch something and then you upload it to your computer and what not) and use those to make flash animations? Or do I have to suffer using the mouse and/or buy a tablet to make a decent flash? Just want to know... but anyways, thanks for the tutor.

"Onion skinning" is probably going to be the thing that will save my life. I would not have known about it had you not made this tutorial. The whole process you showed looks incredibly easy now! Many many thanks to you--I don't have a flash series yet, but I had one planned. Now I might be able to actually do it.

you tutorial is really helpfull! (i made my first animation blink and snore...)
i'm working on a second animation though, if i post it i'll also leave a link on this page! ^_^
a problem i have though:
if i notice that the animation is too fast at certain parts i try to add another frame/keyframe between then, but as soon as i try that i delete the next frame! the ame thing happens when i want to make one frame last a bit longer...

Wahh very nice tutorial!!OuO Thanks a lot!How do you change the speed of an animation though?OuO ;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

creatureart In reply to haru-naru [2008-07-13 02:51:00 +0000 UTC]

If you go to Modify/Document, you can change the frame rate (measured in FPS or Frames Per Second). A higher number means the frames stay on the screen a shorter interval of time - a lower FPS rate will mean the frames last longer on the screen.

Experiment with it a little - high frames rates cause smooth animation, but you need to draw more frames for every second of film. Too low FPS rates makes an ugly, choppy animation - kind of like a powerpoint slideslow.

That's if you're talking about the overall animation, though. If you want fast MOVEMENTS then just use less frames for the whole movement. You can kind of use special effects, too - but that's a whole other tutorial. :3

Hope that's helpful. Thanks for leaving a comment and have tonnes of fun with your animations.

I was looking high and low for a frame by frame tutorial! I tried to learn flash by myself but I'm not really familiar with the framing system and all. Thanx. Your tutorial was really helpful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

creatureart In reply to ayez [2008-07-12 05:19:40 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem at all. Frame by frame is really a traditional animation technique so you can find more about it by researching handrawn 2D animation if you want more info.

But I'm glad what little is in here was helpful for you.

Definitely. Its always a learning curve to get used to new software, but don't give up. Keep mucking around in Flash, get used to the interface (particularly frames/keyframes and the timeline) and you'll have it together in no time.
