Description Edit: Easier way to do this, since im to lazy to m ake a new tutorial. I have only done this in photoshop.

Click on the character layer while you hold ctrl, it will automatically select the shape, then go up to the layer with the texture and click on the mask icon.

------------

Ive gotten alot of questions on how i do this, and its about time i did a tutorial on how to do it xD

The quicker way of doing this is to simply hold alt and click between the texture layer and character layer. Done

What kind of textures do you recommend using? I've been a experimenting a little but they turn out too grainy or too splotchy :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

griffsnuff In reply to Arlowa [2011-03-12 13:28:57 +0000 UTC]

Textures that isnt to much contrast, like not to much dark and light going on at the same time. the softer it looks the best, but not to soft x3

I was gonna suggest the ctrl+click thing but Tubesock beat me to it
Its very handy indeed, although I use the masks for the shadings so I won't go off the base colors, but never thought in adding textures that way too.
Normally I'd past the texture all over the pic and then erase the spare parts like a fool

If you wanna take out a few steps, you can ctrl-click the thumbnail of the character layer, and it will make it a selection. o3o Then click the texture layer and hit the layer mask and it should do it automatically.

Isnt it just easier to put the texture on layer clip above the chr. layer? :ם

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Saffronstone In reply to Rotem1995 [2011-03-18 02:13:04 +0000 UTC]

no because you just want the texture to be on the character, if it's on the background too it looks weird :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rotem1995 In reply to Saffronstone [2011-03-18 06:27:36 +0000 UTC]

You didnt get it right...
I make 2 layers, one with the chr. and one with the bg... and then I put the texture as a lyer clip for the layer with the chr. only... it looks just the same... its just easier XP

Another easy way is to "group" the texture layer on top of the drawing by pressing "Control+G" or going into the Layers Toolbar instead of taking the time to create a mask
