This is a simple lesson, that apparently words couldn't describe, to help someone with Linear Point Lights from Daz Studio 4.

The room consists of a "box" made with plane primitives, surface settings left at default.

My settings for the light, other then those in the images, as follow...

Shadows - Raytraced
Shadow Softness - 4.0%
Shadow Bias - 0.10
Color - White (255 255 255)
Intensity - 100%

Here is my final render result... (but with a more wider setting and UberEnvironment loaded) I highly recommend loading and using the UE light, I can't stress enough that this light (with normal DS light) produces better render results then faked out multi lights without shadows.

This is good to know... also, I have a powerful system and use DAZ Studio 4.5, but my first try using a linear light, and nothing else... I canceled the render after 3 minutes because there was 0% progress. Is it supposed to take so long?

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Actually I don't know about DS4.5, I didn't install it 'cause of some compatible issues with certain things and creating characters (a lot of people don't want DS4.5 so I won't limit my work with only people that have that upgrade). Anyways, I really don't know why the linear light is giving you hell, maybe your render settings? Maybe compatibility? There can be a lot of things. If you go to the Daz3D forums and ask, there are people who's happy to help out. Sorry I don't have the answers.

I have been using Daz since the 1.7 version on up to the current 4.5. I think I might know why some renders take a long time, at least what ends up happening to me as I watched it render. The biggest thing, no matter what version, is the hair when using raytracing. The better the hair, the longer the render...BUT...only until the hair has been rendered, once past there, it speeds up. Watch your render to see if that happens and you may have an answer.

Hey, friend! The hair... yes... it actually depends on the tramsmap applied to them. But this would help greatly, I've seen hair go from 30 minitutes to about 30 seconds using UberHair or UberSurface... here's a link to some setting... [link]

Hope that helps, friend! And you're welcome, I love helping people!

Thanks! (This is Daz (Studio)

(Daz is the company, Daz Studio or DS is the program).

It is worth mentioning that, despite no error/warning messages and even 'processing' messages, deep shadow maps do not function with linear point lights.
You might also need to turn shadow samples down to 1 to prevent some strange shadow artefacts.

Never use deep shadow map, that setting sucks in my opinion. Where are you talking about, "shadow samples"? There's no "shadow sample" setting on the light.

It's in the advanced render settings

That's what I thought. Mine's at 24 at the moment, can't remember what I had it to before my hard drive crashed, but isn't it "the higher you go, the more quality"? I'll have to ask fisty (friend at Daz3D) for her settings list again lol (she know's DS quality, her remarkable renders back her up).

Anyways, this lesson's not on render settings or quality, it's to show what the linear point light does.
