Hey San,

Terrific demo, man. I've never gotten the pens to work that well, especially nt free hand; I'll have to work on building my lines with your technique.

Nice work
Chris

you get alot of comments on this one (congrats on you DD btw)so I hope you get this.

Anyhow, I found this quite useful since I am experimenting with inks at the moment. I did have a question though. You didn't really get into the French carve much. I have been looking at them for a while now. Being in Japan at the moment, everything is rather pricey, so before I run out and get one (as I have a right angle) I wanted to know what I can really do with it. Can you elaborate on it a little more?

Thanks for the tips! I will be checking out the other ones you have made as well for more tips! Your art style is so different from mine, but it's a nice breath of fresh air and a chance to learn!

Think of the French Curve as a bent ruler U use it just like a ruler, GET ONE, Trust me, if u don't use'em now, u will later, and try to score as many different styles of them for later use as well. U'll thank me later on

very interesting, thank you for doing this !
I do ink a lot too slowly, just as you explain on the 3rd minute or something ! XD so it looks quite hesitant... I'l try your way !

Aside from the flow of a brush pen inking in strong lines like that has always intimidated me. Thanks for taking some of the pressure off :3

Thanks for the tutorials. The tip for the ink work was great. I personally prefer brushes or Faber Castel pens though. And Stadelers are fairly good as well. Do you have an tips on how to do thinner lines with brushes. I have trouble doing thin lines even with a small brush.

Have a Steady hand and use less pressure. Hard but you can master it with practice

I'm such a lazy inker! This tutorial was an inspiration for me xD
Also, I have those Sakura pens (they're really great) but so you use a thicker paper? Because I think if I rub mine against my normal paper it'll come through the paper, you know?

Great job! Next time get a friend to hold the camera for you so it feels more comfortable xD

This is wonderful! I use cheap ink pens, and they bleed everywhere. I'd really love to get some of those Sakura Micron pens, but they don't even have them at the biggest art store in my area (it's still 2 hours away because I live in the middle of nowhere). The point is, I wouldn't dare spend the money without seeing them in action, and now that I've seen someone as good as you using them, I think it's safe to buy a set! Wonderful video, extremely useful techniques. I am pretty scared of inking my work because I usually do a very poor job of it...but maybe now I can get the hang of it. Thank you! ^_^

Wow, this is awesome! I'm still learning how to do the whole drawing thing properly, but I LOVE working on inked pieces. I do it the slow way though because I'm scared of ruining my pens by working fast but I really want to try your method now!

I'm most definitely going to check out the rest of your videos now, this one was so inspiring and helpful

StevenSanchez In reply to tiikay [2008-05-11 04:54:19 +0000 UTC]

Don't be heavy handed on the tip. It's just like a pencil, it reacts to the pressure given. Keep that tip in mind Practice with a ball point pen on sketches, it's a great way to get use to pen pressure.

tiikay In reply to StevenSanchez [2008-05-16 04:03:12 +0000 UTC]

It's funny, the ballpoint pen I feel really comfortable, it's just making the transition to the micron pen that's the tricky part

This actually really helped me out. I'm the one who does slow and wobbly lines, and when I look at them close, they always LOOK wobbly and wiggly, which isn't that attractive.
Congrats on the DD, and I'll be sure to remember your tips for when I ink my own drawings.

Oh man, I wish I saw this video 5 years ago.

I've almost entirely given up on traditional inking and have switched to mostly doing it digitally, if not simply cleaning/sprucing up my pencils in PS. The stroke technique you showed seemed pretty helpful though -- I admittedly used the style to said you didn't like...

In the end, I think you made me want to try out inking again. I've been wanting to make a few pieces that have that awesome inked look that I can actually hold in my hand, and I do still have my microns set (collecting dust on my shelf). ...So I guess job well done~

Oh, and congrats on the DD!

Wow you did give me a lot of new information. I have always used those pens, and not being 'confident' with my lines explains why they bleed and run everywhere. I also like how you mentioned the eraser. I've been wondering why my inks have been picked up and if there was a way to avoid that. Thank you. I'll try quicker lines. It might solve my bleeding problem. :3

They range around $2.50 to as high as $3.50 a pop, depends where you get'em from, DickBlick.com usually has'em on sale every so often.
