That should be pretty easier design-wise actually. Bat fingers roughly align with the human fingers, sta.sh/0h15bvxi0kq
The glove approach would be in your favour for this one. Extend the fingers to replicate the bones, then connect them with ideally a thin but leathery fabric.
I'm not cosplayer so I'm not able to give you advice on that part though ;;

I am wanting to try that, too. I want to see if I can make one after I'm done with this project. Giant working bat wings would be sooo awesome!

Quick question, I've started getting stuff together for these but have some limited time to work with them. And I am making two pairs of wings, so to make this easier for me I'd like to make both sets of wings the same size even though the people wearing them will be slightly different heights.
How tall are you/your arms and how big did you have to make your wings (mostly the longest one). I'd like to just be able to go on that, if you'd think it might work

Sunnybrook1 In reply to momma-SHIN [2013-09-13 17:08:03 +0000 UTC]
Ah, I'm 5'8" tall, my arms are about 2ft long from my body, but I made the longest primary feather 2.5 ft long, so my wingspan is about 5ft per wing but 10 feet together~
Does that help?

Hiya there! These are absolutely amazing :3 A friend on tumblr linked me here.
In your opinion, do you think it would be possible for one to make webbed versions of these? It'd be excellent for many things I am wanting to make.
Thankees!

Ah, with the right kind of stretchy fabric this pivot-point concept would work GREAT with webbed wings, I think - haven't had an opportunity/funds/materials to try it out myself but I imagine they'll be simpler than feathered wings since it'll all be one big piece of fabric from body to leading wing edge, no worries about filling the gaps.

This is absolutely amazing. Extremely complicated, but well worth all the effort and time. I see that you have arm cover in progress. Would a cloth covering that you can slide your arms into work, or would that limit the movement? I'd like to take a crack at these beauties.

I agree, and thanks! And while my attempts at cloth covering has been unsatisfactory (to myself, anyways - bah wrinkles!) don't let that stop you from experimenting - you may succeed where I've failed in that. Post pics if you do!

This is awesome! Totally innovative--I can't believe this design hasn't been stolen and commercialized. How long does it take you to make a complete pair of wings? I would love to try and make this as a costume for my Acting III class, but I don't know if there's enough time for me to try make them.

Sunnybrook1 In reply to Klakely [2013-03-01 08:21:49 +0000 UTC]
It depends - once I know the concept worked I was able to bust out one of these wings in about a week, but I didn't keep track of the hours so it is tough to say. During my next set I will DEFINITELY keep track of (a) times/hours spent during construction, and (b) average/specific price and quantity of materials.

Also, when cutting the feathers, when it comes down to the feathers that are less than the generic template of 27.5", do you just cut them to their specific length? For example, I have 2 primary feathers that're 17.5 and 16 inches.

Sunnybrook1 In reply to MidnightSky142 [2011-12-31 05:36:10 +0000 UTC]
Sure, though I didn't plan that far & wasted fabric cutting them down to size later - only cut what you'll need~ *makes note to put these comments in the tutorial later*

Well, it's cheapest if you use/substitute materials you already have, so improvise as much as possible - still, I find myself spending between $50-$80 for everything (just guessing, haven't really sat down and added everything up )

I am a bit confused when you get to the part of getting the measurements from your wrist to the tip of the feather (or vice versa). Where on my drawing am I to measure out? Or is it a matter of a set measurement from the wrist to the tip of the wing? Any advice?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Sunnybrook1 In reply to tygor1 [2011-11-08 02:48:35 +0000 UTC]
Well the drawing is supposed to be to scale (for example, in MY drawing I turned actual inches into all the little lines between the inches on the ruler, 32nd's I believe...then turned THAT into centimeters for more accuracy on the wing/feather sizes) so when you draw the feathers/wing-silhouette around the arm you measure from a spot a bit below the wrist on your drawing (aka 'pivot point').
Did that help at all?

Your wings are amazing!
I hope you don't mind, but how much did it cost you to make these? The only other tutorial I've found that is -cough- better-cough- than yours cost nearly $90.
Thanks for the tutorial! I may actually try this!

Sunnybrook1 In reply to The-Ghost-Writer [2011-06-28 02:42:20 +0000 UTC]
A "better" wing tutorial?! Link, link!
Also, while it depends on where you get your materials, the costs are similar - my current estimate is about $80 (for both wings?). But I still need to finish the arm-cover, so we'll see how much goes into that (trying to keep it simple, so aiming for not much)~

So far, it looks pretty doable, considering I can't find half the parts for the other XD
Here's your link (by better, I mean that I could easily adapt to dragon wings if need be) [link]
