Oh my goodness, these are so cool. I wish I had more time before Halloween, I think I'd be tempted to try making a pair for it, haha. I think I'll wait until you're done making the tutorials before I try making my own set (you'll probably have better ideas on how to get things working properly, ahaha), but holy cow what you've done is awesome thus far!

Lol, thanks! If you wanna make them FAST and on budget, just make them out of cardboard & paper. They won't last as long (and you'll need to get a longer bolt), switch out the alligator clips for cloths-pins, paint/color, and you should be set!

Thanks, it's good to hear feedback on my tutorials. I always worry about how to explain what I'm doing, because I have read so many confusing tutorials I don't want to pass on the experience...

You're welcome.
I think that by reading the confusing tuts, you already have an advantage while creating your own since you know what might be done wrong in the other. I dunno. xD

quite a lot of effort to create something with absolutely no purpose

I believe that each individual gives these costume their own special purpose. For me, it is a homage to an avian aspect I find intriguing and clever. To some it serves an aesthetic need, engineering solution, or a playful nature.

would it be better to use cardstock instead of cardbored? what about Craft foam?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Sunnybrook1 In reply to WingsThings [2010-10-21 16:53:59 +0000 UTC]
I used cardboard for my first test-wing so it works. Cardstock is thinner & stronger, I suggest that. And Craft foam is soft, perfect for folding over your arm/covering gaps, or for small, flexible feathers~
But don't stop there! There's an entire world of materials at your disposal!

Great wings! I have to make some.
Can I ask, how did you decide how long the initial generic feather template thing was? Is it worked out in any way, or is it literally just a large feather shape?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Sunnybrook1 In reply to Kesshoukei [2010-10-04 06:05:03 +0000 UTC]
To create my original feather shape I actually winged it (no pun intended) by looking at some feather brushes, but I found later that in comparison with the birds actual feather the ratio was close to "length in centimeter" = "length in inches".
So use the Feather Atlas to find the type of feathers you want, get it's length in cm, then just make a cardboard one with the same length, only in INCHES.

Lol, not much different, just make the feathers, bend them curvy & attach them to a belt-thingy~
I'm trying it for my Raven costume, so we'll see how it goes.

Do you thin a shear fabric/organza/netting/tulle will work for this application? Because I do not think they will stay shear/see thru after painting them together.

Sure - just switch out paint for glue that dries clear. ~Bushitaka did some awesome wings out of silk & glue (forget which kind) with great success~
