Description
16 x 22Gouache paints with coloured pencil on watercolour paper
*** This is technically a re-posting of this illustration. I plan to do so with all of my Potter art work building up (hopefully) to having some new stuff to share there after. So if you feel like you've seen this before - you probably have. On the upside, I'm sharing it at a larger resolution and without the DeviantArt watermark on it now ***
This was one of those paintings that was a delightful challenge to create. Designing it took a little longer than normal with all the planning that needed to happen - trying to show all the kids - and trying to represent as much about the scene as possible. I drew it in layers, starting at the back drawing Lockhart. Then I drew the first row of kids, making sure not to block too much of Lockhart. Then then next row of kids, again avoiding blocking too much from the previous rows, then again with the Trio. After I filed in extra chaos wielding Pixies that weren't directly interacting with any of the characters... oh and filled in Lockhart paintings. Then I had to try and paint all that. Again - it was a challenge... but so much fun. I'm happy with the results!

What a gorgeous blue that you chose for the pixies! You've done the perfect job capturing the chaos.
I noticed that you have paintings and vignettes up to chapter 3 on Book 3 on your website. I'm going to miss following your art as I read Book 3!

Yeah, the movies tend to influence a lot of peoples takes on the look of the Potter stories... but I find it all a bit too "filtered".
Sorry, I wish I had the time to crank out these illustrations the way I used to, though even when I did it wasn't all that fast. The first book took me years to finish. I'm trying to get back into a habit of making art time more of a priority in my life - hopefully it'll work out and will be able to post a bit more often.

What you've shared with us already is such a gift so there's really no need to apologize! This is a mammoth-sized project and you've done such an excellent job. Good luck with finding more art time!

I like how everyone--including the paintings--looks properly terrified, with the exception of clueless Lockhart, who is about to make a quick getaway to his office!

I like to think that deep down, Lockhart is equally terrified, but he's "mastered" the art of showing the emotions he want's... or at least concealing those he doesn't

Progress indeed! I like the way your depicting the scene as it was described in the book rather than the movie. And Lockharts outfit is hilarious. My only little piece of criticism is Ron seems a little too freckled.

Oh yes, I'm all about being faithful to the books first and foremost! And that's cool that you find some criticism in the illustration - it's art and therefore subjective to differing tastes. I would be surprised if there wasn't something that didn't necessarily sit right with anyone viewing my art

Thank you very much!!! I'll say this about the Potter books, most of the scenes worth illustrating, and there are (obviously) a lot, they usually have a lot going on in them making them all the more fun and/or interesting.

This is a good scene, especially depicting all the reactions in the paintings from the mischief ensuring!

It was disappointing not being "closer" to the paintings to see them a little better. But I think they worked out well enough - I'm glad you enjoyed the illustration!
