No, quality doesn't sell, it's how popular you are *cough* I try to sell quality models and get nothing. Meanwhile I make something crappy for shits and giggles and everyone is all over it.

There's some truth in that I suppose, but in the end, serious MMDers will seek quality models to use for serious projects.

I haven't seen much evidence of that, just looking around. Unless the fact that the Japanese models are better counts and you disregard the whole rules issue.

Even models with crappy functionality can be used to make pictures or run "canned" motion data. No one in their right mind would use one of those to develop an animation.

Besides, don't be mislead by download figures. People download a lot of stuff. Often in the manner of faving. That's rather meaningless. What really counts is when they actually use them for stuff. Otherwise for all you know, those downloads might have just ended up in the recycle bin.

But if go back to what Chibi IA said at the bottom, how you market your stuff can also be a big factor. Actually it can be significant.

So downloads are just another way of faving it? Guess that explains why it seems like less than 10 people actually use my China model out of over 100 "downloads"

I'm not sure what's the best way to market stuff then. For various things I've tried a nicer approach and I've also tried a more aggressive approach and neither has had any sort of real results.

3700 people have viewed this model

1184 people have downloaded her

I haven't seen a single picture or video using her outside of my own work. Is there any significance in this observation? Nope, absolutely none. The Internet is a big place. Most people don't bother to post reverse links. They might also only use her totally in private. Or many just like to collect models and don't necessarily use them.Β

My attitude is simple: If anything I did made just one person smile - mission accomplished.

I see. Let me ask you one question though. What if you have no way to tell that you managed to make that one person smile?

Very often there is a way. You just have to read the comments that people do leave behind.

Real Examples:

"Waaaaaayyyy too cute <3"

"Very cute XD"

"adorable *-*"

"OH MY GOD. THIS IS ADORABLE. I'll name her Gume :3"

IF they leave a comment at all, then yeah that would work

It's very helpful, thanks! But i have a question:I plan to upload my models on Bowlroll, and you said that the readme must be in UTF-8 format, but just the readme or the model too? I mean, it doesn't matter if the model is in UTF-16 or not?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to Karrollyne [2013-08-17 17:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Just the readme.txt - Don't mess with the model's default UTF settings as bad things can happen.

I would have also stated you can put the models textures inside a folder (usually labeled texture) to keep the folder nice and clean looking.

Also to make sure that when you put the model into a ZIP (or RAR or whatever you use) folder, that the ZIP File has a folder with the model and parts inside instead of just the models parts being the first thing inside the ZIP. Nothing says fun like unzipping a model only to realize you just unleashed hell and a ton of textures you have to hunt down into your /model folder.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to HandofCreation0 [2013-08-14 17:28:41 +0000 UTC]

Actually I don't zip with my files inside a separate folder and prefer not to do that as:

1. And I always open zip files to inspect their contents before unzipping.
2. I have a folder naming system, so prefer to drop stuff into folders I create.

Nothing wrong with doing it the way you mentioned either, but my way is equally valid.

Some MMD Models actually made it out into the market, like TDA and LAT Miku became Figures and Mamama ApiMiku became the mascot for JP Domino's Pizza.Β

Trackdancer In reply to BlakeJX [2013-08-14 17:06:01 +0000 UTC]

You can make any MMD model into a figure. Just need a rather expensive 3D printer.

The last one I used had a price tag of US$50,000 and it was friggin pain to set up too and slow as hell.

Wow, 50k, that's a lot

Never saw a real 3D Printer in stores before, so I wouldn't know.Β

You won't see them in stores. They have to be specially ordered.Β

On an unrelated note, can you translate these for me please?:Β fav.me/d6i6uwu

Thanks for the tutorial.

Also, Chibi IA is adorable when she teaches

Thanks for that feedback. I was a little worried about how she would come across in this tutorial as it's the first time I've allowed her to take a more serious tone.

Well it really is.

I want to let you review Lily-T when I'm done, but its gonna take some while. She's really high poly so her weights and facials Β are gonna be hard O_O.

Take your time and enjoy the process of making her. At the end of the day, as long as you're happy with your own efforts, that's all that counts.

I will. I do enjoy making her, and ad the end, the time and effort in it will (hopefully) show .
