Uhh, Hi!  The groove bone works fine, but my model's eyes don't move with the groove bone? Do you know any way to fix that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to decafeboy [2018-04-19 00:47:26 +0000 UTC]

The model's eyes should not be moving with the groove bone. If they're not moving at all with the rest of the body or incorrectly, check the eye bone structure associations.

Just use the semi-standard bone plugin to add the groove bone; this tutorial was written a long time ago and is really only good for people with some experience editing MMD models.

As an aside; very very few motions actually uses this bone, so your model will be fine without one.

Would this work with accessories or stages? Like if I wanted a train to move in one of my MMDs would I be able to do that by doing this? Like a train on a stage or an accessory train.

I don't know if my question made sense, but I can send you a video of what I mean xD

Trackdancer In reply to pikasilvazefan13 [2017-03-26 23:00:47 +0000 UTC]

Actually yes, if you know what you're doing you can actually add a functional groove bone to an non-humanoid model. In actual fact, some MMD model trains have them, they're called something else but essentially they are identical in function to groove bones.

Oh okay, would I do to make it move, though? Just put a motion on it?

Trackdancer In reply to pikasilvazefan13 [2017-03-29 03:13:08 +0000 UTC]

There are not that many motions that actually uses the groove bone. However, you might to check out these tutorials:

Um... how do you make a "new bone"? I have the half-English version of PMDE.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to Sinamuna [2016-11-06 02:47:41 +0000 UTC]

Right click in the bone list panel under the bone tab and select "add new".

could you maybe make a tutorial showing it step by step? :c this is complicated and I can't figure it out.
I have six models I rigged that really need groove bones though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to LeaDoll [2016-09-18 03:04:56 +0000 UTC]

Just use the PMDe/PMXe semi-standard bone plugin to add groove bones. All done perfectly in just a few clicks. This tutorial is kind of dated.

LeaDoll In reply to Trackdancer [2016-09-18 04:21:33 +0000 UTC]

I tried that but all it did was make the models legs float ;o;

Trackdancer In reply to LeaDoll [2016-09-19 00:43:44 +0000 UTC]

The semi-standard bone plugin is not buggy. If you're having issues with it or adding the groove bone manually doesn't work either, read this tutorial again so that you have a fuller understanding of how the bones are properly associated. When you add the groove bone, the entire lower leg hierarchy needs to change.

Trackdancer In reply to XxXxStarfirexXxX [2016-06-08 23:26:21 +0000 UTC]

You could also use the semi-standard bone plugin to do this. It is a lot easier - it just takes a click or two to do the whole process.

That's even better. Where can I find it?
Nevermind I just installed it and I keep getting this error where it cannot load the plugin. Am I installing it wrong?

Yeah I did that already and it still say that it cannot load the plugin. But i found the answer. I have to unblock the plugin in the plugin's properties before using it. Thanks for helping tho :3

Yep, not hard to do at all, but nowadays I just use the semi-standard bones plug-in to add this bone. Lot less fuss.

Panama60 [2016-04-21 04:06:35 +0000 UTC]

You mention that it is very important to give the bones their correct Nihongo names, I'm curious, is that because
the program code won't recognize English? I'm trying to sort out a rigging problem and have translated 157 names.
I intend on using this model in several projects and was wondering if I changed the names, would I be making 157 mistakes? lol
I'm using the PMDEditor 0139(english) if that makes a diff. It's about half Nihongo and half English

self-edit: Please disregard. This is a correct way to add a Groove bone tutorial and not a rigging question festival.

Trackdancer In reply to Panama60 [2016-04-21 18:05:20 +0000 UTC]

No problem but I will answer the question for you anyway as it is really simple.

MMD assets (bones, facials, whatever) that have labels have two names. The Japanese name and the Anglicized name. The Japanese name assets have to follow certain conventions for the common bones and facials as some are hard coded into MMD and others are in common use by the community and are de facto a standard practice so that motion data, for example can access them. So it is almost mandatory that Japanese names are used for these assets on the Japanese fields for these labels.

The fields available for English label names is purely cosmetic. You can put anything into these fields without impact the model in anyway. They are there as a convenience for those of us who don't read/write Japanese and are only seen in MMD when the UI is set to English.

Panama60 In reply to Trackdancer [2016-04-22 02:46:06 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for that. It confirms my suspicion that since the original MMD program codes were written using nihongo, they're still required for the core of the program, even the english versions.

Now.. I know how to change the color of, but do you resize....shut up, Rog.....go find THAT tutorial....lol

I've read through the previous posts to make sure I'm not repeating a question. I know the groove bone is placed above the center bone and the distance
between the 2 does not matter. Does the distance between the groove bone and the groove tail matter?

Self edit: My apologies, I forgot to say Thank You for the informative tutorial.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to Panama60 [2016-04-18 22:35:13 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the groove bone could be anywhere. Either above or below the center bone and still functions fine. It even be invisible for that matter. However, the convention and for ease of use it is usually found just a wee bit above the center bone.

The length of it's tail makes no difference to its function but the tail orientation does (but it will still work without a tail).

Hi! I followed all of the steps, but the thing is that my model doesn't have the bounce. This goes for the IK, too. It just moves, and isn't anchored to the ground. Help?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Trackdancer In reply to IndigoSW [2015-11-29 21:25:20 +0000 UTC]

Models don't actually bounce just because they have a groove bone; it requires a suitable motion set to make the model bounce and I have written one or more tutorials on how to do this.

AngelicPrincess653 [2015-09-23 23:24:35 +0000 UTC]

I am doing something really wrong. I followed the steps the best that I could, and yet when I open the model in Transform View, the model appears to be squatting. I try to upload a motion to test it, and the model's legs sort of lay on the ground. I'm so confused. Oh no wait... Nevermind, I did it! YAAAAAAAAY!!!! I was trying to test it in PMX Editor... .///////. That was my mistake. Thanks so much!

Trackdancer In reply to AngelicPrincess653 [2015-09-23 23:28:21 +0000 UTC]

Try to use the Semi Standard Bone plugin to add the groove bone instead and save yourself some heartache.
Your model is squatting because the bone hierarchy is set up incorrectly. ><

AngelicPrincess653 In reply to Trackdancer [2015-09-24 05:07:01 +0000 UTC]

Right. I'll take note of that. However, my model seems to work fine now. It's one of Kanihira's models, Mariel. She didn't have a groove bone... but she does now. For some reason, she looks weird in PMX Editor. However, she works just fine in MMD. But yeeeeeaaaaaah, I digress... I will most definitely take that into consideration. Still learning the whole model making stuff with bones, physics, ect. XD I only do this for hobby, but still!

You know, now that you mentioned that it's only weird inside the PMX Editor I remember something like that happening to me too. Can't remember what causes it though. The PMX Editor can be really quirky at times.

AngelicPrincess653 In reply to Trackdancer [2015-09-26 23:47:50 +0000 UTC]

XD I've had some quirkiness in PMX Editor, but you should see what's happened to me in MMD. Like, when I first started using effects about close to a year ago, I had to use version 7. Well, I went to upload an "Aki" model from Misao, and I got WAY more than I bargained for. I got, like, probably 100 or more models of just one. XD I only wanted one, that 100! I actually have a picture in my gallery labeled, "OMG WTF". I can send a link if you want to see it.

Trackdancer In reply to AngelicPrincess653 [2015-09-26 23:54:00 +0000 UTC]

I found it. Interesting. I thought you needed an effect to that; it's an interesting bug and I think it's your graphics card not liking something about MMD that did that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AngelicPrincess653 In reply to Trackdancer [2015-09-27 03:24:21 +0000 UTC]

XD  I'm not sure what happened, but it only happened once. Sometimes, I have the occasional glitch where my model will appear weird, such as eyes that don't show and legs that appear separated from the body.

The Groove Bone is not a replacement for the Center Bone. There is a series of tutorials in my gallery that explains exactly what it is used for. If you have the time, you might want to check them out.
