Description This was done in Photoshop 7, but it should work with all versions of Photoshop that support Channels.

By the way, the character in this piece isn't mine. His name is Grull Half-Ogre, and he belongs to *HoundofCullin .

I was in the layers section. Do I do the filling on the "Lines" layer? It is obvious that the lines layers should be used for that. Unfortunately, it only worked on the "Background" layer. I make so many mistakes, but I learn from them. It's a good thing, because Photoshop can be complicated.

You have to fill the Background with White and the lines with Black when you have loaded the selection from the "Load Selection" menu.

I did pay attention to the comments and the tut, but the same thing happens. I don't know where I went wrong.

The tutorial is good, no matter how many mistakes I've made. I should try different methods in order to achieve the "ink layer separation" process.

Seems a bit overkill doesn't it? When I need to colour a sketch, I just fiddle with the levels to up the dark and lower the midtones, then set a layer above it to multiply and put in the colours... That way you don't get an aliased feel to it, which can sometimes happen when you're using the fill tool (which is banned on my computer ).

which can sometimes happen when you're using the fill tool

What you do is you lock transparency and colour with the brush tool if you want to colour the lines.

It's kinda nice to make the lines other colours sometimes. It's especially good for pieces with a lot of light-to-dark contrast.

Yeah, if I have good sketches I'll sometimes make them another colour with the control-u tool, but usually I just colour over lineart onto a transparent layer anyway..

Do you have a tablet yet?

Hoo! so youre meaning you can ink the drawings without the ink going to the white areas?

Neat, pretty good technique for preserving it, without resorting to contrast/brightness, or setting to multiply. Useful.

spacehamster In reply to GH-MoNGo [2006-08-17 10:50:28 +0000 UTC]

Um... and why don't you just want to set the lineart to multiply? Just curious...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GH-MoNGo In reply to spacehamster [2006-08-17 14:23:14 +0000 UTC]

Because if you want to colour the lines afterward, you'll have to do it the messy way (which is tracing over them with the brush tool... )

This way, you can just lock transparency and colour the parts you want to colour.

spacehamster In reply to GH-MoNGo [2006-08-17 16:34:36 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay... to be honest, I don't understand how some of the stuff you're doing here works, but the thing is, I just turn my inks into 50/50 black and white anyway, so if I want to color the lines, I can just magic wand them.

Oo, a very interesting technique! I've never tried this before, but it looks like a great way to separate the lines from the white...In painter when I have scanned lineart or lineart from another program i always have to make the lineart into a watercolor layer so i don't have to use multiply layers, but since photoshop and painter are compatible I can use this!
