Description This was done in Photoshop 7, but it should work with all versions of Photoshop that support Channels.

By the way, the character in this piece isn't mine. His name is Grull Half-Ogre, and he belongs to *HoundofCullin .

Thank you so much. I was using the magic wand and feathering the selection deleting. I was looking for a tutorial for painter x, but this worked so well that for now I will just prep in photoshop

I am glad you sent this message twice. I am going to need this. Yeah I've noticed alot of character designers with the sketchy multiply/pen technque (am I getting repetitive here?). At first I tried the techn, with pencil and didn't like it. I still knew I had to work it....

Hmm...how can you fill the selection with black in step 5? with the paint bucket tool or am I clearly missing something? because every time I do that it ends up like second panel...

I keep messing up in the very last step... I do not know how you "fill" the selection . Mine keeps getting real black.... Could you have a note on this PLEASE!!! Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GH-MoNGo In reply to Veronika-Art [2007-05-31 01:01:24 +0000 UTC]

Under the Edit menu, select "Fill", then select "White" instead of "Foreground Colour".

Just a question... Is there a way to get the thing lines in linear art thicker or clearer ? I lost many fine details....

You have to adjust that in scanning. Make sure you scan in a high enough dpi.

cute. It's insane that it takes these kinds of measures to do (what shuld be) such a simple operation....

i foresee a lot less 'multiply' in my future..

Hungrysparrow [2006-12-16 20:46:38 +0000 UTC]

Seems a bit long winded. I simply set the line work layer to 'multiply' then put a colour layer beneath.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GH-MoNGo In reply to Hungrysparrow [2006-12-16 23:06:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but that doesn't allow you to colour the lines themselves without affecting the colours underneath them. This way, you get the black lines without the white space.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hungrysparrow In reply to GH-MoNGo [2006-12-17 00:18:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh right! Whenever I did that I would always use that threshold thing which turns the layar into stark black and white. The only problem is that it results in pixelated edges when you zoom in. This matters less depending on how high the resolution of your image is. However if I wanted the lines smoother at the edges I would simply give the layer a very slight gauzian blur (VERY slight) once the lines have been coloured. Of course selecting the lines would be a matter of >select>similar.
Having said that, when I next do a line art piece I shall definately be giving your method a go. Cheers for the tutorials by the way, it's really interesting finding out about how other artists work and use the software in different ways.

What about if I want to do it CMYK made to print it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

GH-MoNGo In reply to VernonDraws [2006-12-13 22:59:46 +0000 UTC]

You duplicate one of the CMYK layers and then follow the rest of the steps as normal.

faroresama [2006-10-18 01:43:30 +0000 UTC]

I just tried this out today and it worked well! It's good for me because I always use a blue pencil for sketching and then normal pencil on top, and this gets rid of the blue stuff. Now the only problem is that I draw on the backs of school papers and you can kind of see the text through my scans

Skeeze [2006-08-20 18:09:23 +0000 UTC]

This is a question regarding Step 5.

For the filling part, do I go to Edit-Fill? I do that, and my background is black and the lineart was white. The same thing happened when I deselected it. It did not look like the image in your tutorial.

I am not an expert in Photoshop. The paths and channels procedures are irritating.

Yes.

Make sure you're in Layers, not Channels, when you're filling.
