Description Edit: Part II (digital inking) now available!: [link]
Also, eyes tutorial: [link]

Starring Cloud from Advent Children! (see... told you I was in a bizarre ffvii mood)

Yes, I know that sometimes sketches are Never So Clean as they are in this case... I'll talk about digital inking sometime in the near future in another tutorial. But this is for those who sketch cleanly or who go back and clean up their pencil sketch by erasing and redrawing the lines.

Feedback appreciated! (was it clear? more/less detail? What other stuff would you like to see?)

Ah, very good! I'll try that the next time I get the chance. Line art is the hardest thing to get correct.

My question is how do you deal with large picture sketches where it takes like 2 scans to fit in the whole picture and the paper is two separate colors, not to mention that the artwork is a lot more sketchier than yours.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

joulee In reply to darkside-ky [2006-03-03 20:11:19 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.., i've never tried that before. But you can bright-ness contrast to get the paper to white and use the rotation/resize tools to make it all fit.. ^_^

Pretty good.

For me, I use "Level" option in photoshop to have a clean line, and then I put a little blur.
But your technic work well to.

In the end, I think one of the best way to have a clean line is to use illustrator, but it's a quite long.

joulee In reply to god3ila [2006-03-03 20:12:44 +0000 UTC]

yeah, the best way is probably to re-ink digitally. Thanks for the feedback! I'll try "level" next time!

Nice of you to share this with us! I was a little bit confused though... since 'cleaning sketch lines' was your goal but there were hardly any lines in the drawing you started out with! I'd wished to see more intensive cleaning.
Changing the sketch lines into another colour and 'fuzz' them was a great idea btw--that'll help me a lot in the future, thanX. ^^ I've seen some tutorials on DA and yours is definately the easiest to follow. Screenshots were easy to comprehend, sometimes you'd think that some tutorials were for advanced users, y'know? Anyhow, enough blabbing--keep up the good work!

joulee In reply to Tyara [2006-03-03 20:14:04 +0000 UTC]

thanks for your feedback! yeah, this is definitely one of my "cleaner" sketches. I hope to put some more tutorials up soon about what to do if your sketch is much much much messier to begin with, so stay tuned! ^^

I just wanted to say that this tutorial has helped me SO much. Your explanation was so good that I was able to modify it for Corel Painter IX! I see that you want advanced critique and I'm sorry that I'm not able to give that, but I did want to thank you. It will take a LONG time for me to understand programs like Photoshop as well as you do, but thanks to this tutorial, I've got a starting point.

Also, this drawing is really adorable. Cloud has never looked so...cuddly. It's a solid drawing with good lines that keep it interesting and the coloring and shading really add to it without taking away from the cuteness.

Thanx!

joulee In reply to arliss-whitney [2006-03-03 20:15:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for your feedback! I'm so glad it was able to help you even without using Photoshop! Yeah, it definitely took me a loooong time to understand photoshop and I still am far from knowing everything. I've used a lot of tutorials in the past to teach me techniques and tricks, so I'm hoping to continue the tradition. ^_^!

omg, thank you~~ This is PERFECT~ My friend has Photoshop but didn't know how to do the lineart and that type of stuff. I am so going to recommend this to her.

Gah, I wish I had Photoshop though. *has Paintshop Pro* It is really good though...it's just I have a hard time finding tutorials for it when trying to find stuff about lineart. ~_~; Oh well, I can at least try to use these instructions and get a similar effect...hopefully. Thanks again for making this wonderful tutorial~ *goes to look at the others*

joulee In reply to Buy2PayFor3 [2006-03-03 20:17:07 +0000 UTC]

thanks for the feedback! I've used PaintShopPro a little, and from what I know, you should be able to do most of the things here in PSP (gaussian blur, adjusting colors, and using layers with multiply). So don't be discouraged and try that out!
